Description:
I have a dear friend who is the most faithful letter writer (yes--actual paper letters)--and she writes to me-- the most terrible communicator in the world. So this song is for her--and everyone else that I dont keep in good contact with.

Lyrics:
"Drifted"
Words and Music by Arin -2006

I dont ever use the phone
I rarely write you letters
I never visit you at home
I really should start acting better.
They say, "You never know what you have until its gone."

Id come visit you and we could talk
But by the time I'd get there I'd have forgotten all I had to say.
CAuse Ive stocked it up for so long anyway.
I save it for that "rainy day"
But its winter- and rain doesnt have time to play.

Far away have I drifted.
Too far inside myself.
I need to open up my heart-
And reach out to someone else.

My intentions are all there
But I bet you're thinking
"If she really cared she'd set aside the time-
all I need is just a freindly 'hi'
If it really is so hard- maybe what we had is gone--oh no (you see...)

Far away have I drifted.
Too far inside myself.
I need to open up my heart-
And reach out to someone else.

Oh-maybe this time I reaalllyy mail the letter.
Maybe this time I will pick up the phone.
I think Its time I get myself together.
Oh Why do I try to live my life alone?
Cause nobody really makes it all alone.

I dont ever use the phone
I rarely write you letters
I never visit you at home
I really should start acting better.
They say, "You never know what you have until its gone."

Far away have I drifted.
Too far inside myself.
I need to open up my heart-
And reach out to someone else.

Cause nobody really makes it all alone.
Cause nobody really makes it all alone.

Beautiful song &mdash 01/23/06 - 05:03:50 AM
There's so much good stuff going on here: lovely lyrics, great melody
(with a cracking chorus) strong arrangement and you have a great voice.
Some of the percussion sounds a bit clunky - maybe there's a bit too
much going on at times. This is just a niggle however - this is fantastic,
well done.

Thanks! &mdash 01/23/06 - 09:12:42 AM
thanks for commenting! Yeah---Im not the best with figuring out percussion
and making it sound the way I exactly want for my songs. Eh--I guess ya do
what you can do. It can be trying at times because so often people can hear in
their head how they would like their song to sound--but hee hee-- some of us
dont quite have the engineering and technical skills to realy acheive that. : )
Thanks again for writing! Great to hear from you!

(Look! I wrote a letter back! I knew my communication skills would improve
once i wrote this song--wahoo!)

Whoa!! &mdash 01/23/06 - 09:22:01 AM
You're really GOOD!!!!
What a pleasing song! I feel have to put an exclamation point after every thing I write! Maybe two!! You have a simply wonderful voice!! I love that little ocatve yodel you throw around!! Very soulful melody!! A relaxed composition backing the song, nice choice.
I think during the short piano break about 2/3's the way through... a simple instrument solo could have been layered there. Violin perhaps, maybe harmonica. Something unexpected.
Again very very pleasing song!!!

Your exclamation points make me giggle! &mdash 01/23/06 - 09:34:38 AM
hee hee. see? :) Thank you for your comments! It's fun when other people
besides those that know you kinda like the things you do. Thanks for the idea
about the layering--I'll have to go back and listen--and figure something out.
Thanks again!

Solid &mdash 01/23/06 - 09:52:52 AM
I really like your vocals on this, the clear pop diction, the stylized way
you play with the melody, the emotion you bring to the lyrics, the use
of harmony. There is something brittle and not always on about the
drum loops, rhythmically, that detracts from the easy flow of the song,
especially in the first third. I'd also boost the piano (piano players are
never loud enough). Sometimes the way you pronounce your vowels
(especially "o" and "eh") can make the sound drift from the pitch, and I
mention this becuz mostly you sound right on; it may be a matter of
opening more, support, or being more demanding. But don't change
those Joni Mitchell or Jewel moments when you play with pitch on
purpose, which work well. Very nice track, intimate and honest. It is
fun to watch how much better your tracks are improving.

You made me write! &mdash 01/23/06 - 10:59:57 AM
It's maybe paradoxical, but it's a long time since I wrote the last comment. I thought I was getting lazy, but when I listened to your song I felt the necessity to COMMUNICATE you that it was one of the most touching songs I have listened to in MacJams. Your voice is delightful, the tune is so nice and I love the piano. And since I'm writing this, congratulations, you got your aim! (By the way, I voted too :)

Nice to hear another song from you!!! &mdash 01/23/06 - 02:02:42 PM
I just love your voice--and I hope you will be posting here more often!
This is a wonderful track. Your voice sounds very poised, confident in this
one. Excellent.
I'd like to hear it a little more forward in the mix?--or maybe the
percussion could be a little farther back, since the piano is also a bit
'hidden' in the balance, too.

Great song--thanks for posting this!

Nice &mdash 01/23/06 - 04:22:22 PM
I love the piano, goes so great with the vocal. Not sure I'm feeling
the lyrics, but this song is nice. I have to agree with Komrade K
that the vocals have a sort of "cracking" noise, but that's just me.

This is some really good stuff. You really know how to write a progression. Very catchy and I really dig the chorus. The middle is a nice addition. Thanks for sharing.

Gorgeous &mdash 03/19/06 - 05:53:03 PM
You have a wonderful voice. I love the parts where it almost breaks and then comes through stronger. The chord turnaround in the "Far away" parts really lifts this song up. The sentiments are wonderful and I imagine there's many people (including myself) who could relate. This could definitely be a single.

Love that fallsetto &mdash 02/16/07 - 07:23:44 AM
Cool singin. i was at my song "Like An Angel" and was looking at the last comment by baucus. So I proceeded to her page and she didn't have a tune. But her first one she had on her list was this song and I am glad I listened to it.

Like that Phebe Snow sound you have going on in the tune. Plus, the words nobody makes it all alone is fitting, Cause if is didn't see her post I wouldn't of heared your wonderful tune.
