Description:
And now for something completely different....
When I'm not making music in my spare time, you will probably find me writing. I enjoy writing imaginative fiction, and seeing where the story takes me on the journey.
This time, I'm letting the music do the storytelling. While looking through SoundFonts, I chose some files and decided I wanted to build the atmosphere around them.
I had laid down a synth bed previously, and as the sound effects were added, a story seemed to be in the making.
A 'lost' civilization. People who simply 'disappeared' without trace. But nothing simply disappears...?
Those familiar with Antonín Dvořák's music might recognize a motif in the song--perhaps a clue of how the story ends?
Though, ultimately, this story--and how it ends--is in the mind of the listener.
Enjoy!

wet, weird, wonderful... &mdash 01/23/06 - 09:59:12 PM
...and possibly demonic. (Just kidding!) You know what I think of this
piece, but for the record, I will say it is very spooky and creepy, in a
good way. It could be the soundtrack for an undersea adventure film.
Do they make those anymore?
Seriously, this is another fine example of how you refuse to fit into any

Lovely and dark &mdash 01/23/06 - 10:24:57 PM
Love the sounds you're using for this... very low and dark... conjours
many different images. Hard to hear the Atlantis/Underwater idea with
the bird calls but I can hear things like Sam and Froddo trekking
through the Dead Marshes... travelling through a swamp and night with
a single torch light... a dark dream sequence or battle in slow motion.
Regardless of what happens... I like how your vocals/backing drifts
towards a lighter feel. As if theres some respite or the sun is rising.
Very cool piece. Wierd is good! [ Reply to This ]
The Dead Marshes......oooooh &mdash 01/24/06 - 04:36:18 PM
Thank you, Bryan, for your comments!
I like the idea of travelling through the Dead Marshes. Very cool. Kind of creepy.
And yes, I did add a bit of 'lightness' towards the end....No matter what happens...

Wonderfully Elvish! &mdash 01/23/06 - 11:10:47 PM
This piece is wonderfully "elvish"! It also explains why your ears are
completely covered in your photo. Come on. Level with us. They're
pointed aren't they?
All kidding aside (for now)---you keep topping yourself. Great concept.
Lovely vocals. Clean mix. Nice "mystical" ambience. Thanks. [ Reply to This ]
I might be Elvish... &mdash 01/24/06 - 04:47:14 PM
But the odds are, I'm just ...well... mystified.
I'm glad this song is getting the response it is and that others are enjoying it. I've always enjoyed 'program music."
Compositions like "Pictures at an Exhibition" always brought to mind such vivid imagery.
I guess this was a reflection of those pieces in an ambient setting?
Thanks, again, for your comments!

Nice pure sensual voice. Great mood. Nice stereo field. Good depth. Excellent texture. Had to listen to it twice just to make sure that I heard right the 1st time. Very nice [ Reply to This ]

I do like the texture of the droning synth, found in GarageBand 2. It's one that I've used before, but this time I wanted to feature it in a simpler setting.

Shoes-Pink Cotton Candy. [ Reply to This ]

Vultures? Maybe ;)
I very much like your vote!! I think all votes should be similarly connected to such things as cotton candy and platform shoes!
Maybe Almond Roca? [ Reply to This ]

A Dark Olias &mdash 01/24/06 - 09:45:01 AM
Wonderful textures and blending of sound. Some of it reminds me a little of Olias of Sunhillow (if you are familliar with that). Nice work...vocals as beautiful as ever. [ Reply to This ]

A Dark Olias &mdash 04/13/06 - 05:06:14 PM
Olias was a solo album by Jon Anderson of Yes back in the late 70's. It's actually an incredible album for both vocals and synth orchestration. Of course, this is coming from an old prog fanatic so you may want to take it with a grain of salt. [ Reply to This ]
Rolling soundscape &mdash 01/24/06 - 10:40:01 AM
The multi-track blending of voices is very well done and the harmonies are moving. Choosing a single solo voice and keeping it in a particular timbre and sonic space is a good device - kinda reminds me of being led along the corridor by a knowing guide. One nit-pick - the exotic bird (?) sound has an overtly digital quality - unintended computer compression I'm sure - that reminds me of the supposedly-soothing digital sounds of my alarm clock. You know the type - ocean waves / babbling brook / soothing rainforest and so on. Such a tiny observation when compared to the sweeping whole. Thanks so much for posting! [ Reply to This ]
Rolling soundscape &mdash 01/27/06 - 05:18:59 PM
Hey! I want one of those clocks!
All the bird sounds came from one font....played both too 'low' and 'high' on the keystation for the correct sound.
Yes...a bit synthy. I was looking for something that wasn't automatically identifiable as a bird you'd hear outside your window.
Thanks very much for your comments and your observations here. I really appreciate you stopping by :)

You want one? They can be gotten very cheaply ... check it
out (although I'm not endorsing the website in question). I so wanted
the "soothing nature sounds" to actually be
soothing, but they're a bit too noticeably synthetic for me. It's a good clock
otherwise! [ Reply to This ]

A Mind Movie &mdash 01/24/06 - 03:52:50 PM
What an intriguing trek into the depths! There sure is a mixture of elements here, that works as a split-screen of adventures taking place on land and under the water - this piece flows with such drama. Love the golden progression of major chords that are like a curtain thrust open after a very long and dark walk *(or swim)* - beautiful textures, I love your voice and the suggested structures that you weave with a very simple orchestration. Awesome! [ Reply to This ]

Just when you think you have a full grasp of what Myst does, she hands
you a thing of atmospheric wonder...
Loved the tone painting and 3D image making from the invisible.

I LOVE the depth of this mix &mdash 01/26/06 - 10:15:42 PM
I see a deep, very green, lush forest, through which a path almost
magically appears as you step forward. I also like how you stay diatonic
with occasional chromatic shifts. Is the baritone voice you with effects, or
do you have another singer there?
just great. It's a download. [ Reply to This ]
I LOVE the depth of this mix &mdash 01/26/06 - 10:26:47 PM
The 'baritone' is me!
hahah.
It's the vocal transformer option in GarageBand 2, and it worked very well for these brief 'chants.'
I'm glad, because there were points at which i wanted to accent and expand the sound beyond 'me singing with me.'
I'm glad you enjoyed this. Thanks for your comments!

… so sorry this comment won't be long, Mysti. Really nice to hear

it would work well with the sort of stuff you're writing. Perfectly
fantastical and magical, with a darker edge to it too. Great stuff! [ Reply to This ]

Well, this has got... &mdash 01/28/06 - 02:22:25 PM
...a llttle bit of everything you are and do, doesn't it?
Really lovely singing, Mystified, with really sure pitch and sweet tone. I
love the thickness of the swirling sounds in the background, and the
bass tones within them.
As you can see, it just gets people going off into their own projected
stories, their own imaginations, and that right quick.
Very nicely different.

interesting &mdash 01/30/06 - 06:56:51 AM
Really different. Definitely deserves a focused listener despite the ambient nature. I think it works best if just listening undistracted.
Maybe the only thing I might suggest is more of an idea for this kind of music...Perhaps build up tension in spots with dischord and then provide relief with harmony. [ Reply to This ]
