Description:
what a difference a preamp makes!

this is just a little ditty about how deceiving appearances can be.

the electric guitar sounds are actually unmodified from my new preamp - love the tube distortion!

Lyrics:
tastes like sugar water
a simple syrup
to soothe my soul

slipped in for the slaughter
and then i lost
all control

sweet taste soon turned sour
and charm is
growing old

hey hey pretty white boy
what you doing in these parts
hey hey little white boy
i know you're here to break my heart

see you walking down the street
million dollar
chip on your shoulder

all those coins have got me beat
she tried to listen
i wouldn't have told her

learned not to trust your kind
one thing on your mind

hey hey pretty white boy
what you doing in these parts
hey hey little white boy
i know you're here to break my heart

you can just walk on by
now i know how to fly
you can just walk on by

Great song! &mdash 01/24/06 - 10:37:59 AM
I love the voice! Very cool vibe! Recording could be better! WHat are you using! Maybe add a little effects to the mix! A little dry!

Great! &mdash 01/24/06 - 11:05:30 AM
I think you are really getting a sweet Guitar sound! And your voice is really special!! the simplicity in the arrangement do add to this, The electric guitar is a sweet little touch on this one!! I like that it is a bit dry, it makes it nearer!! Good song as well, Like the words a lot!

Good Lyric &mdash 01/24/06 - 11:22:04 AM
Good voice. Melody is too repititious for me. I would change the chord
pattern and the melody either in the chorus or the verse to give your
listener a little respite from the over worked, 4 note melody. Guitars
recorded well. Tempo seems a little too fast for the subject matter. I'd
blues it up a little more or go for soul/funk feel. It would couch the
lyric in a more meaningful groove and sell the meaning a tad better
IMO.

Good Lyric &mdash 01/24/06 - 11:56:09 AM
hey daddyg -

thanks for the input - i did have some variations on the melody, but didn't use
them... was going for a straightforward kinda thing here - kind of a departure
from some of my other stuff.

welcome to macjams!

I'm curious &mdash 01/25/06 - 11:19:20 AM
I love the repetitive, chorus......I feel it puts your listeners in a trance like
state and demands more concentratioin........your lyric has me wondering
what this "pretty white boy is doing".....is he selling drugs? starting up a
gambling ring?.........thanks for the tune....sounds great..........t

hey thanks - t-bone.

i guess he's doing really anything you don't want him to be doing.

but basically he's a heartbreaking bastard.

cool &mdash 01/26/06 - 02:45:36 PM
man... I think you have the most compelling lyrics around. You are a very very strong writer. This is another great track.
I like the interplay between the acoustic and electric.
Your voice is killer, sounds real warm (tube pre?) I think when you sing it's important to remember that those little electric riffs can compete with your vocals, whereas where you do chord comping it compliments the vocals really well and has a more relaxed feel and sits in the groove more easily. However the little licks you do on the electric are really nice. That's just my person taste
This could have been fleshed out with more instrumenttion. Drums and bass, especially with the introduction of the electric guitar. But I do like the sparce instruments and immediacy of this.

cool &mdash 01/30/06 - 09:39:22 AM
thanks tom!

glad you liked the lyrics - i often have the hardest time writing lyrics. everything else comes a little easier.

yeah - i got a tube pre. settled on the presonus bluetube dp. very happy with it.

i had noticed the lead does compete with the vocals a bit, but i figured that the chorus has happened enough times by then that it doesn't matter too much - good thing to think about in the future, though.

thanks again tom! your comments mean a lot to me.

Groovy &mdash 01/26/06 - 03:55:45 PM
You and your guitar really sound great in this one. You have a very unique
voice (yes, in a good way) and you really know how to make it work to
your advantage. Not something everybody can do.

The only minor nit I have to pick is that the electric guitar licks, as good
as they were, sounded a bit too 'close' to the mic compared to the
acoustic guitar, which had more of that casual 'room' sound.
But again, just a minor nit :)

Very nice work.

Groovy &mdash 01/30/06 - 09:46:13 AM
hey thanks ein!

yeah, i had noticed that the electric lead sounds more like a DI than the other stuff (probably because it is!) wasn't really sure how to change that, though... something to work on...

Fly Seagull! &mdash 01/26/06 - 06:20:11 PM
Darren, I have to admit I haven't been listening to much on MJ lately,
but glad I took the time to have a listen to this. You sure have
improved over the past few months!! Your vocals are sounding more
confident and well thought out, as is your playing. Your songs have
always been interesting, and the lyrics in this are very good indeed. I
really like the lead sound you're getting on the Seagull - amazing what
a little box of electronica can do isn't it?
I like it as it is, but think it could have taken bass and drums which
would lift it completely - especially after the electric comes in. Good
one!

Fly Seagull! &mdash 01/30/06 - 09:49:03 AM
hey neil!

well i'm glad you stopped in to listen as well - mj can get a little overwhelming at times, huh?

yeah - i guess i have been improving. either that or just caring less about what the neighbors think when i'm singing alone in my little room... lol

hate to burst your bubble, but the lead isn't my seagull, it's a legitimate electric.

i was thinking about adding drums / bass, just clueless where to begin with it. maybe soon!

thanks again!

i did!

i'm pretty sure i kept with it, too... but when i tried to add drums, i couldn't find any that worked - i don't have any DoD or anything fancy like that.

Wow &mdash 01/26/06 - 07:23:56 PM
the first song I have heard of yours. Not the least disappointed...just the opposite, in fact. Not that I have much advice to offer, but in efforts of trying to help...it could sound fuller somehow, maybe with some compression and effects. You have a great voice (emphasize it!) I really like your lyrics too. Keep up the great work, I'll be listening for your tunes:)

Wow &mdash 01/30/06 - 09:55:36 AM
hey kis kis

glad you stopped by - thanks for the kind words!

hmmm... i do have some compression on the master track. no effects, actually -
some reverb here and there and some EQing.

but anyway - thanks! i'll keep an eye out for you, too.

Doors-ey &mdash 01/30/06 - 12:22:04 PM
Hey urbanite, for some reason, this is slightly The Doors sounding... in a
dark and pensive kind of way. I love your delicate guitar solos and your
voice has great pitch. One thing I noticed, and this is personal preference,
but I'd like to hear the reverb taken off the vocal track. I think it would
make this piece sound that much more intimate, like you're singing right
here. There's sort of a distant feel, and it creates almost too much space
between you and your listener. perhaps it's just the recording though. On
a lyrical level, I love this line: "slipped in for the slaughter/and then i lost/
all control". Very cool. The darker, the better. Keep it up!

Doors-ey &mdash 01/31/06 - 09:54:42 AM
hey missC -

i always am torn on the reverb issue - people say to add it, but i feel the GB reverb sounds kinda fake. there is some room reverb happening here. but i took yours (and selters) advice and went back and stripped the digital reverb entirely (there wasn't much to begin with) and i think it sounds a lot better!

that lyric came about oddly, actually... it was originally 'moved in for the slaughter' and i kept singing slipped - guess i naturally wanted that alliteration. :)

anyway, thanks for the kind words - and have fun on your tropical honeymoon!

hey white boy - &mdash 01/31/06 - 09:31:34 AM
seagull sounds great. i noticed what seemed like room ambience on the
guitar and vocals, just wondering if that is natural reverb or digital reverb?

[ Reply to This ]
hey white boy - &mdash 01/31/06 - 09:57:57 AM
howdy 11 -

yeah - the seagull's my baby! i advertise them when i can!

it is room reverb... i added a bit of digital as well, but not much. i've actually gone back and taken it out - the sound of the room is enough i think!

small room w/ hardwood floors and not much on the walls... typical detroit.

Hey white boy, what you doing up town? &mdash 02/01/06 - 03:21:05 PM
pretty rough, but song is there. vocals are a bit overwhelming. Would like
to hear this same song done with female vocals.

Reminds me some of the acoustic Pink Floyd, if it was less bluesy.

but it wouldn't be so gay if a woman were singing it... hm.

i'll take a pink floyd comparison, though. :) thanks cj
