Description:
The last song in my post 9-11-2001 series of songs. This is about the last cellphone call to a friend. Followed by lots of walking around, between volunteering. Infinite restlessness. And then days without them... and only that last call to remember and replay.

Other songs in my 9/11 series:
I Will Love
New Holy Land
Was There Once A Time

(See: Journal from the Streets to read a photographic journal about my 9/11 experiences.)

Lyrics:
LAST CALL

Each day: Morning.
Replayed warnings.
Words I still repeat... can't escape.

One call, hurried.
One voice, worried.
Know I love you.
Be safe.

And I search the skyline.
Can't remember why.
Was it you who told me once
not to trust my eyes?

Deep below the buildings
shadows stretch beyond.
Will the streets I used to walk along
help me carry on?

Each day: Evening.
Walking. Grieving.
Never been this late coming home.

Endless phoning.
Tireless roaming.
Know we love you.
You're not alone.

And I search inside me.
Can't remember why.
Was it me who told you once
faith lived in your smile?

If I search the future,
will it still confound?
Do the words I've stored from yesterday
help me carry on?

Over to you,
I give my everything.

Over from you,
I get my energy.

Once the sky looked silent and clear,
until I heard you there, waiting...

Until I come
over to you...

Nice Harmonies! &mdash 05/18/04 - 07:06:20 AM
Tobin, this collection of 9/11 songs is very touching. Thanks for the opportunity to listen.

Beautiful, haunting... &mdash 05/18/04 - 11:11:46 AM
It's been a long time since I've listened to your tracks and
I'd just like to say how much I enjoy them. Wonderful!

Thanks

Beautiful &mdash 05/18/04 - 03:11:02 PM
I love the music. Simple and beautiful. The lyrics are also
quite nice. But somehow, I wonder if the music itself isn't
a bit too... well... pretty for lyrics that (to me) are filled
with hurt.

Once again, thanks for sharing this.

Beautiful &mdash 12/28/04 - 01:47:30 PM
Singing the beauty in the middle of the tragedy, of recalling the preciousness;
and then of falling into the "Over to you" section... This is part of what I was
going for, singing from someone that lives more inside the memory of what
was lost than the tragedy of losing, who would be motivated to call into the
land of the dead and rather be there than in this land of the still alive.

Thanks. I wanted this one to be clear and transparent. Your comments are
very appreciated.

such poetry &mdash 05/21/04 - 01:54:07 PM
with so few words, how much you convey. but in grief, words are precious and hard to pronounce. i felt it all. the difference between your lyrics in your verses, slight changes, subtle like the change life brings after tragedy. the clear blue sky will never be the same, remembering.

The short phrases... it was what seemed best for such a song, when words
are all but failing. Thanks for noticing.

Great Concept! &mdash 05/21/04 - 05:32:44 PM
Garageband makes it so easy to make mindless "Autopilot" songs, it's great to come across someone who actually puts some thought into things. I think the words are just as important as the music, and hopefully Apple will never come out with a product that writes poetry for us.

Keep up the good work!

As usual, wonderful ideas expressed well, with excellent
production values.

Very moving &mdash 07/01/04 - 07:08:39 AM
Living in the UK I can only imagine what it must have been
like to be a New Yorker on 9/11. I was very moved by this.

I loved the guitar part particularly and, yet again, I'm
blown away by the musical theory at work in your songs.
Wonderful construction and performance as always.

Thanks Wifty. The guitar on this song is all MIDI. No loops, the entire music
bed is MIDI. I learned to play piano by imitating guitar players, especially my
older brother. I really like playing MIDI guitar now, much easier on the
fingers tips.
