Smuggler's Song by Rudyard Kipling

Description
yesterday i attended the funeral of Alex Ross. she was a vibrant, talented and shining light that was taken from us after only sixteen short years. the celebration that was dedicated to her life filled me with memories of my father who was left us six short months ago. my father, Phillip Lewis, loved people, music, art and poetry - his favourite poet was Rudyard Kipling. so this is my first tribute to my daddy. i hope you enjoy it as much as he would have.

and.... thank you alimar for helping me realise that i could x

and.... the accent is meant to be cornish!!! any welsh is purely coincidental!!!

Lyrics
IF YOU wake at midnight, and hear a horse’s feet,
Don’t go drawing back the blind, or looking in the street,
Them that ask no questions isn’t told a lie.
Watch the wall, my darling, while the Gentlemen go by!
Five and twenty ponies,
Trotting through the dark—
Brandy for the Parson,
’Baccy for the Clerk;
Laces for a lady, letters for a spy,
And watch the wall, my darling, while the Gentlemen go by!

Running round the woodlump if you chance to find
Little barrels, roped and tarred, all full of brandy-wine,
Don’t you shout to come and look, nor use ’em for your play.
Put the brishwood back again—and they’ll be gone next day!

If you see the stable-door setting open wide;
If you see a tired horse lying down inside;
If your mother mends a coat cut about and tore;
If the lining’s wet and warm—don’t you ask no more!

If you meet King George’s men, dressed in blue and red,
You be careful what you say, and mindful what is said.
If they call you “pretty maid,” and chuck you ’neath the chin,
Don’t you tell where no one is, nor yet where no one’s been!

Knocks and footsteps round the house—whistles after dark—
You’ve no call for running out till the house-dogs bark.
Trusty’s here, and Pincher’s here, and see how dumb they lie—
They don’t fret to follow when the Gentlemen go by!

If you do as you’ve been told, ’likely there’s a chance,
You’ll be give a dainty doll, all the way from France,
With a cap of Valenciennes, and a velvet hood—
A present from the Gentlemen, along o’ being good!
Five and twenty ponies,
Trotting through the dark—
Brandy for the Parson,
’Baccy for the Clerk.
Them that asks no questions isn’t told a lie—
Watch the wall, my darling, while the Gentlemen go by!

superb
this would be good enough to grace many a Radio 4 'book at bedtime' etc
type show.

a great way to celebrate people who although no longer with us are never
that far away, moving, heartfelt and compelling.

Beautifully read, your father chose a great poet to enjoy, a heartfelt
dedication. Nothing more to say, m'lady. I honour your losses with
peaceful gentle silence today.

ahh, now I understand
what you meant when we talked yesterday. I'm so sorry you have had such a rough time lately Caroline. However, I am glad your outlet can be shared with all of us here, who care about you and are graced by your emotion. This read is fascinating, truly professional sounding. You must do this for a living or something! :) Anyway, wonderfully done. And again, I'm sorry.

Don't take this the wrong way…
Caroline, but I was reminded of Pam Ayers… it's the accent, I'm
afraid. It also reminds me of Kenneth Williams. Honestly, I mean
both of these as compliments – you have the delivery and timing
of the masters. We listen because we love you, Caroline, but we
feel so strongly about your reading and tell you about it because
it's that good and that powerful. Sorry for your loss.

You're the cream in my scone!
You put the dark into stormy nights! Excellently read with an accent
which stayed firmly in the West Country... Sad to hear of the reasons
behind you choosing to perform this poem but you bought a smile to my
face at least if that's any consolation...

sound like
the fairies
Up the airy mountain
Down the rushy glen,
We daren't go a-hunting,
For fear of little men;
Wee folk, good folk,
Trooping all together;
Green jacket, red cap,
And white owl's feather.
Down along the rocky shore
Some make their home,
They live on crispy pancakes
Of yellow tide-foam;
Some in the reeds
Of the black mountain-lake,
With frogs for their watch-dogs,
All night awake.

High on the hill-top
The old King sits;
He is now so old and gray
He's nigh lost his wits.
With a bridge of white mist
Columbkill he crosses,
On his stately journeys
From Slieveleague to Rosses;
Or going up with music,
On cold starry nights,
To sup with the Queen,
Of the gay Northern Lights.

They stole little Bridget
For seven years long;
When she came down again
Her friends were all gone.
They took her lightly back
Between the night and morrow;
They thought she was fast asleep,
But she was dead with sorrow.
They have kept her ever since
Deep within the lake,
On a bed of flag leaves,
Watching till she wake.

By the craggy hill-side,
Through the mosses bare,
They have planted thorn trees
For pleasure here and there.
Is any man so daring
As dig them up in spite?
He shall find the thornies set
In his bed at night.

Up the airy mountain
Down the rushy glen,
We daren't go a-hunting,
For fear of little men;
Wee folk, good folk,
Trooping all together;
Green jacket, red cap,
And white owl's feather.

Try that one
