Description:
I was inspired to complete the soundtrack which I posted a few days ago (thanks for the comments and ideas!). Added a theme and refined the arrangement. I actually spent a few evenings on this project, mostly trying to mix and optimize the instruments. Turns out that getting the full orchestral sound I was looking for is not that easy and the usually simple process of making music became quite elaborate. So turn up the volume and let me know what you think. I'll be grateful for any feedback!

I love the wide range of feeling created here: soaring yet intense; an
overtone of freedom contrasted by the percussive undertone. The
intensity gives way to a higer-spirited, uplifting anthem that seems to

um, you've singlehandedly just convinced me to purchase the symphony
jam pack. When it first came out, there were a bunch of songs that
cropped up using the sounds, and I just wasn't convinced that they were
realistic enough. I need to pick your brain. I was feeling okay about my
stuff until I heard this! Wowzer, put me in my place! What a fantastic
production of talent, weaving, emotion, and serious dynamics! I need to
figure out how to capture the quality in the strings you have here. I'd love
to see your GB file. Really, if you feel like sharing your trade secret, I'm all
ears. I'm really humbled. Back to the drawing board for me, I think. You're

Thanks for your extremely generous comment!! I obviously don't know any trade secrets, however I do listen to real orchestral arrangements and try to calibrate GB's sounds to that - literally. Once I like the sound of my strings and cellos I start composing. I am happy to share whatever little knowledge I have, and for more info on how to improve - keep reading! I like this. It has a lot of power and a grand scale to it. It can be tricky
getting a natural sound out of the instruments, esecially the brass.
While this came off sounding much more synthetic than a live
symphoney, the sound was good overall; not natural but good. It has a
cinematic sense to it for sure. I think it could use another voice in
there, something taking more of a lead position on top of what's there
already, something that soars over the main bed of music. Maybe a
singe french horn. Try not to use the maximum velicity too much as
that is when the brass tends to sound the most synthetic. Really a
great base structure. I think with something taking the lead over it it
could be better, more focused.
Also, it was a bit heavy on the left side. Try to get some voices on the
right side to balance it out. Actually, it's very helpful to work from a
real orchestra map so you know where the instruments are usually
placed in the real thing. A few hundred years of experience can't go
wrong.
It sounds like you have a good sense for the energy you are going for.
I think with some further work on this piece you can find even more. I
still enjoy it as is. [ Reply to This ]

Thank you so much for taking your time! Your comment is truly insightful and interesting. I have in fact never looked at an orchestra map. I will also try to play with the French Horn solo idea. I had not used trombones before, but liked the raw impact of the instrument, since French Horns (which I would usually use for that part) are gentler and sound more natural, the harsh sound was in a way intentional.

I used different sounds from the various drum kits, including orchestra percussion, studio brush, cavern, 2-step remix and seventies kit. Most GB instruments simply require minor tweaking and reverb effects to sound less synthetic. Thanks for your interest! [ Reply to This ]

I've always been a big fan of movie soundtracks, especially Hans Zimmer,
so this is right up my alley!
This has a very Zimmer-ish feel; a kind of Batman Begins (the fast paced
deep strings in the beginning) meets a weird, feel-good version of the
Rock (the nice melodies and the percussion).
Anyway - that's how it struck me.
Great work.

Very nice... beginning chord changes and orchestration have almost a
Christopher Franke feel to them (Babylon 5 soundtrack). The flute
theme you added has sort of a Lord of the Rings feel, very pretty. I
love the brasses throughout, nice strong kick-out-the-stops music.
Very well written, and I appreciate you saving it from being just lyrical
cotton-candy-movie-background-music by adding the melody in
there, it fits well and helps juxtapose the raw horn-power. Very
tasteful way to end too. Great tweaking of instrument notes/velocities,
awesome orchestration and ideas on transitions between sections.
Wow, all I can say. The only critique I have, listening through
headphones, is that the slow panning at the beginning of the brasses/
celli back and forth was a little strange. But that's really minor.

Whatever composers might have inspired this piece is largely irrelevant to
me. When I listen to this type of music I am focused on two things:
Performance and the emotional impact the composition has on me.
In both cases, I would judge this a stirring piece, wonderfully done within
the limitations of GarageBand and its JamPacks instruments.

You've really brought the best out of GB's JamPacks - this sounds better than some of the scores that are gracing movies like "Bloodrayne" right now. It definitely has a Hans Zimmer feel, though more like his protege' Mark Mancina ("Speed") with all of the drums and tension-filled rhythms. I especially like the glorious moment of major-chord resolution that surfaces from time to time, it's almost an American Cowboy motif (and thereby a bit like Basil Poledouris' work on "Robocop") I would've liked to have heard more dynamics in the main body of the piece similar to the end where you brought it down to the woodwinds. Otherwise, a sweet piece of music, maestro! [ Reply to This ]

What performance Parichayaka... Very well done. This peice is a bit
different than your others, not as much of the groove factor, but I
know that this was not a missed target, and as well, I REALLY like this
one too.
I've been enjoying your music in my mix and this spices it up and
broadens the range of tasty treats that is quickly becoming an

Your choice of orchestral patches, the way you combine them and the way they are mixed is excellent. The result is a very rich, full, lush sound.
The driving beat, and percussion instruments add a great deal of energy and vitality to this track.
The low brass is a very effective "spice".
The chord progressions are interesting and lend an atmosphere of suspense, and create the feeling of going down a long tunnel....then making a turn down another tunnel in a different direction....then another. This would be good music to accompany such a scene in a movie.
I agree that the first 3/4 of the piece needs more of a melodic focus (as Peter suggested). There is a very nice, catchy melody towards the end of the piece, in the flute sound. I would recommend incorporating this theme throughout the piece.

This is the first song that I gave 10s to all around. The contrast between the intensity of the percussion and the gently soaring flute was amazing, as was the use of dynamic harmony. I could hear so many elements in there that melded together with brilliant precision. This was POWERFUL stuff indeed. I've only been a member of MacJams for less than a day, but it started with me being directed to this track from Google when took a long shot and typed 'how to make music like Hans Zimmer in GarageBand'.
And certainly have done that with this track.
