Description:
A sketch for a song acknowledging the need for companionship to ward off those existential blues.

Lyrics:
STILL WITH ME
C
In the middle of the night
Am
when I’m fumbling for the light
Dm G
I need to know that you’re still with me

When the walls are closing in
when I feel jumpy in my skin
I need to know that you’re still with me

When I’m defenses are breaking down
when my house of cards comes tumbling down
I need to know that you’re still with me

When I hit the wrong note
when I didn’t catch the joke
I need to know that you’re still with me

When I start to feel the panic
when my troubles seem titanic
when I’m afraid at the clinic
when I’m ravaged by the cynics

When a comment hurts my pride
when the world seems too wide
when I feel the emptiness inside
when there’s no place on earth to hide

When I’m passed over for promotion
when I’m lost in the commotion
when I’m adrift on the ocean
when I’m drained of all emotion

When there are cracks in my facade
when it rains on my parade
when they see through my charade
when I feel like a renegade

When the money’s all gone
when I’m barely hanging on
I need to know that you’re still with me
When I lose my way
when there’s nothing more to say
I need to know that you’re still with me

Jeeze ... thanks for the helpful feedback, eleveneyes. I'll have to add "when my
sensibilities get mocked" to my list of anxieties.

That's ironic - that's the same thing my wife said about me after our initial
encounter.

Harry Nilsson-esque &mdash 01/30/06 - 03:43:06 PM
This was fun and made me wish I had some Jonathan Richmond ... but I
have some Harry Nilsson I can listen to.
I like the spirit of this, very winning and whimsical.

Need a producer Mr. Smith (sorry) &mdash 04/15/06 - 09:57:45 PM
Mr. Smith your song is "Still with me" and it sounded okay. You need a
little of something in there - well I think - maybe drums, bass and
strings? Sounded okay my man.

PS: Hope I wasn't to harsh?

If it sounded "okay," then it passed the test of being a musical sketch. I've got hundreds of pieces that never get beyond this stage - ideas I've recorded on tape or disc that are outlines for songs. This particular piece was recorded and then sent out as a possible collaboration with a couple of other macjammers (the idea was for it to be sung as a duet - which is why my vocals are split over the left and right channels to show the two parts), but it went no further. I decided to post it on my page because it represented something a little different from my other entries.

That said, I really don't try to work from a specific formula. Sometimes a song gets worked over through a series of new takes and developments. Other times it starts up and becomes a complete effort as a single entity. And a lot of stuff gets recorded as an idea or a sketch and never gets beyond that stage.

I keep telling myself I should go back and work on some of these old ideas, but as new ideas keep popping into my head, it seems all I have time for is to chase after them.

Anyway, thanks for listening and leaving a comment - even if it was meant to be facetious.

By the way, my first name is Warren - not Mr.

Nice Sketch &mdash 04/29/06 - 06:17:48 PM
Great base for a catching song.

The panning was a nice effect but it's a bit awkward to hear at times. One
side seems stronger than the other. Left seems like an "afterthought" and
the main voice was Center-Right (if that makes any sense).

I would also like to hear 8 bars added of maybe the guitar and you
whistling (don't know why whistling... it just feels right :-) Maybe at the
end of it fading. Just can't get the whistling out of my head...

Nice Sketch &mdash 05/05/06 - 08:56:53 AM
Thanks for the comments. I am a whistler, but not a particularly good whistler, so it's unlikely I'd try to use whistling as a finishing device. But you never know!

I whistle when I walk, and that also happens to be my usual method for documenting a new melody - I whistle it into a microphone attached to an iPod. New melodies can appear at any given moment. I have learned to capture them on the spot - otherwise, poof, they are gone a moment later. These iPod voice memos get transfered into iTunes when the iPod gets updated. I review them, and with Garageband open, try to turn them into songs.

You have a cool voice, and this expresses perfectly what we all wish we
had- friends who stick this close. :-)
