Description:
guitar, vocal, mixing, etc. is all me.
this was the first song i ever wrote, and it's from this past summer. i was missing someone very much.
also, the painting is mine. it's of my house, done in oil last summer or so.
Lyrics:
out of the corner of my eye
i saw a face shaped in the sky
was that you watching me?
please, please what do you see?
im so near to home, i can hear it callin
im so near to home, i can hear it callin
callin
callin
i walked down to the street today
you always told me look both ways
now i see both sides of every situation
who knew this would cause a revelation?
im so near to home i can hear it callin
im so neat to home i can hear it callin
callin
callin
and this idea sparked some fuel of mine
of quick clocks and too much time
i see you in the clouds and youre all mine
i guess that i have won this time
im so near to home, i can feel you right here
im so near to home, i can feel you here
im so near to home, i can feel you right here
im so near to home, i can feel you here
youre here, yeah.
youre here, yeah.
out of the corner of my eye
i pulled a face out of the sky
put him right here next to me
so please, leave, let us be
im glad i am home, i can feel you right here
im glad i am home, i can feel you right here
im glad i am home, i can feel you right here
im glad i am home, i can feel you right here
right here, yeah yeah.
right here, yeah.
youre right here....

lot of potential &mdash 01/30/06 - 12:58:04 AM
Good writing and singing. I think you have great ideas and musical
sense. Your vocals and lyrics really carry this. But the production
doesn't do it justice. I assume you are singing into the pinhole mic on
the computer; I can hear all the room noise as well as the noise coming
from the computer and there are a lot of pops from you blowing into
the mic. If you can afford to spend a little cash I would highly
recommend you invest in a half decent condensor mic, a preamp
interface to the computer, and a simple pop filter. It will make a world
of difference. Hearing this song, I think your music is worth it.
In the meantime, without buying anything, you can get rid of (or
reduce) the pops by completely dropping out the bass on the vocal
track. The good part of vocals does not reside in the bottom range;
only pops and mic bumps reside there so you won't be hurting
anything. You may also be abe to reduce the general noise to some
extent with some EQ work. Also, at the very end, because there is so
much ambient noise recorded on the tracks it makes for a rather
abrupt cutoff at the end. Best to fade that out so it doesn't just sound
like to record button was clicked off at the end. Basically, there is
quite a bit you can do to clean it up but the best solution is to get a
better recording in the first place.
This is a good song and I think you perform it well. I think it's worth a
little investment in some basic equipment. I use an M-Audio 410
firewire interface (about $300) and an AudioTechnica MB4000C
condensor mic (about $90). You can likely find a cheaper interface that
will work for you out there. I'm happy with what I got. Depends on
your budget. Generally, decent mics start at about the $90 mark. Pop
filters can be purchased for around $20-30 or you can make one
yourself out of a wire hanger, pantyhose, and some duct tape.
The sooner you get these things the sooner your recordings will sound
a lot better and the less music you will have to record over from
scratch. [ Reply to This ]
lot of potential &mdash 02/18/06 - 08:18:13 PM
these comments are right on the mark. I got a firewire solo for 200 bucks
which has plenty of versatility. a decent mike for sure to do your beautiful,
sad sweet songs justice. lookin forward to hearing more. [ Reply to This ]
lovely voice &mdash 01/30/06 - 01:34:25 AM
Hello Katiekh I have listened to all three of your songs and have really
been impressed with your voice. Your voice is really high especially in
What child is this.... I like the compostion of this song and with your
voice all does the lyrics justice. pgreenstone has given you some really
good ideas and advice and would only improve on your already
impressive talent. Anyways I think your really talented especially
producing what you have and can only imagine what else you could do
if you had all the other goodies to put to use as pgreenstone has kindly
advised. Your braver than I as I am too shy to post here what I have
done. Being an amateur, playing piano by ear and using garage Or
rather trying to! to compose my music and songs. or though really I
shouldn't be as always the peoples comments to others is always kind
and helpful. Look forward to hearing what you create next. kind

Pretty Voice &mdash 01/30/06 - 01:48:03 AM
You have a very pretty voice .. however, I echo what has been said above .... the issues are with the mixing aspects ... (I know I have GREAT difficulty in this area myself ... but there are a lot of great people on MacJams who will gladly share their time with you and help) .... a very nice song. [ Reply to This ]
Nice song &mdash 01/30/06 - 09:01:36 AM
I liked the song very much. but the recording and mixing is a mess.
Don't need to give advice, because pgreenstone already did. [ Reply to This ]
ambient folk &mdash 01/30/06 - 01:11:22 PM
I really like this..yes the production is rough but it actually adds to the
rather ghostly quality of the track, although the 'peaking' would need to
be addressed. The 'repeated' vocals are great..you have a very powerful
voice

OK, the prod is kinda cheap but actually, I think it's great. it reminded me of a band called COCOROSIE (2 sisters who recorded all of their album in an hotel room, with basically... nothing). and there's a bit of CAT POWER in your voice too. I'm gonna give a shout to your other songs! [ Reply to This ]
It's Beautiful &mdash 01/30/06 - 07:58:55 PM
You're right that you need some help on production as the echoes were
sometimes cool and sometimes intrusive. PGreenstone has already given
some excellent advice so I'll just stick to encouragement and please don't
take that to mean blowing smoke at you. My g/f turned to me while the
song was playing and said, "That's really beautiful."
You've got the most important parts. You can write and you have a lovely
voice. Everything else can be worked out either by learning production
yourself or by working with someone else. Welcome to MJ and I look
forward to your future contributions. [ Reply to This ]

Fine Colors and Textures &mdash 01/30/06 - 09:31:59 PM
Your Vocal Instrument is Remarkable and Important.
No Singer/Songwriter "Wanted" to become an Engineer, and,
apparently, neither do you. No Bigs there. Some folks just have The
Touch, as a good Engineer is Astounding, indeed, mind boggling.
I believe that at your age and with your apparent talent, you do not
need to become an Engineer, just learn how to relate with one. If luck
runs your way, you'll find one who can "identify" your voice and make it
quite nearly unigue.
In the meantime, single track mono all channels. No Clipping. Find
Good Mic positions for your recording environment. Acquire the best
of the entry equip available (M-Audio, Rode, etc.)
And, as they say in the Trade, "Fix it in the Mix".
Best,

Say,
Also, remember that once you have a clean capture in hand, you can forward it
to a trusted Amigo (via YouSendIt.com) and have Them do the Mix and Post
Production on their gear. The only requirement being as clean a capture as the
equip allows.

I think, theres alittle too much delay and reverb in the second vocals. but its all good.

congrads on the first song &mdash 02/08/06 - 10:34:39 PM
This is really something for the first song.
Would like to hear you with a better mic. I recommend highly to get the
guitar further back and with more reverb, more depth.
You have a richness in the backround singing as well. Your lead
singing is terrific for your first song your ever wrote.
Thanks for sharing!

is to bring up your voice in the mix

bittersweet &mdash 02/12/06 - 06:51:42 PM
youve got alot of talent here, everything fits in place, the haunting background vocals, steady strumming, and the lonesome lyrics.
All you need now is some recording equipment that will do your song justice. very nice song, and welcome to macjams. [ Reply to This ]

Katie- as noted, comments on production would greatly help do this song
justice. Your voice is lovely, but what I love on this and your other tracks
is the sense of ambience and atmosphere, which gives your work a real
distinctive edge. I think this is really original - keep working, as you really
have something unique here. [ Reply to This ]
People can say what they want... &mdash 12/28/06 - 12:50:20 AM
I say you have a nice thing going here. The recording gives it that live feel. A lot macjammers are more into the production sound, then the actual heart and soul of a good performance regardless if the sound quality isn't perfect. You have a good voice and the chorus effects are pretty cool. A few parts could have been tighter. Beautiful voice/beautiful woman, thanks for sharin'-MJG [ Reply to This ]
