Description:
a rework of an older version of this posted here almost a year ago.

Lyrics:
My Religion
©1997 Ray Kainz/Sue Ann Kainz

When I looked into your eyes
I thought I saw the flame
your kisses baptized me
and at your feet I prayed

Your body was my alter
were I worshiped every night
my faith was without falter
my will without a fight

You were my religion cross myself three times
Your desires were the trinity and your commands my wine
You were my religion but I'm through with you amen
no more of you amen

My teardrops make a rosary
a prayer as each one falls
no more genuflection
at the slightest of your calls

cuz I don't need your liturgy
to tell me that I'm wrong
confession's what you need to do
forgiveness is not in this song
I don't need your hymnal
to follow when I sing
no I don't need you anymore
this angel's taking wing

You were my religion cross myself three times
Your desires were the trinity and your commands my wine
You were my religion full of false prophetic talk
You were my religion gonna pick up my mat and walk
cuz You were my religion but I'm through with you amen
no more of you amen

You're really Mcboy, aren't you? &mdash 01/30/06 - 06:05:03 AM
Or maybe you have been consulted by Mcboy, Inc? I am beginning to
figure it all out. There are a few artists on MacJams that I have doubts
about: Cori Ander, Mcboy, and now, you. I doubt that you are a real
person. Ray Kainz? Right! Good name to front the team of musicians,
writers, etc who produced this piece.

I remember the original version posted a year or so ago. Funkier. But I
really like this one. The religious imagery still doesn't quite work for
me overall, but the sound of this tune is so good that the lyrics don't
really matter. Great guitar, vocal, harmonies.

Please pass these comments on to the front office.

Dang! &mdash 01/30/06 - 07:51:15 AM
The old version has been a big favorite of mine ever since I joined Mac
Jams. Perhaps because it was one of the first songs I ever heard here
(along with ROOTWATOR, another favorite), but whatever the case, I've
always liked it.

This version is very different, obviously, and I really love that. The
production is top notch and you have a very professional sound, like
I've said before.

The only thing that bothered me was at the three minute mark where
you enter the chorus via the series of crash cymbals. I'm being very
pedantic, I know, but it kinda bothered me that you used the same
cymbal for all the crashes. But that might just be me :)

Awesome stuff, man - a definate fav & a DL!

Dang! &mdash 01/31/06 - 08:13:02 PM
thanks for your time and thoughts Einarus.
regarding the crash cymbal, that entire fill is a JamPack loop. although it was a
midi loop and i could have easily alternated between another crash, my
justification was thus, if i were actually playing that part on my drum set, i would
play it the exact same way, repeating the same crash because i only have one
crash cymbal and cuz i'm lazy, i actually thought about the same
thing for about 4 seconds and decided it was too much effort to change.

thanks for stopping by!

Jumpin' Jesus &mdash 01/30/06 - 08:10:27 AM
This song smokes!! I really dug the first version. This one has that energy plus lots more. great guitar. smooth smooth progression. great vocals chops, you hit cool notes.
tasty guitar solo, I mean tasty!

Lyrically...The first two verses are cool, using religious metaphors to parallel human desire in a clever way. I also like :
"cuz You were my religion but I'm through with you amen
no more of you amen "
Then I think the metaphors start getting in the way. It seems each religion reference is there almost for it's own sake, rather then as a vehicle to further something more compelling. Indeed, don't get me wrong, the lyrics very good in a pop sense. But the song is much less a pop song than the first version, more dynamic. Musically intricate, introspective and intelligent. I think the words get left behind.

Jumpin' Jesus &mdash 01/31/06 - 08:29:15 PM
thanks for your comments alley-oop. i like what you're saying about after the
2nd verse dropping the religious metephores. it kind of reinforces that last
line.

the whole religious metaphore thing was a creative device my wife used when
writing this, purposfully sticking to religious imagary as a means of
manufacturing inspirato and at the same time building in a certain
cohesiveness - that was the intent anyway. My other latest song Down Time
was created within restrictions too. I wanted to use all major 7 chords. I wrote
the song that way with lyrics melody and everything but then broke away
from that restriction where the song needed to. I guess breaking away from
the lyrical restrictions in this case might not be a bad idea. if i ever muster up
the energy for v5.0 i'll seriously weigh in your suggestions.

thanks for the ears dude!

Amen &mdash 01/30/06 - 01:29:32 PM
I recognised the lyrics before the melody. This new version really rocks
proper. Great arrangement and performances; damn fine guitar ripping.
The effects on the vocals sound good on the louder parts but seem a bit
heavy in the very beginning where it's stripped down. The ending kind of
let me down; it didn't feel like it was ending there but it just did. Overall,
really really well done, from writing to production to performance.

the more i listen to this song the more i agree with you regarding the vocal
treatment at the top of the tune. I think i'm going to have to address this issue.
thanks for your ears and thoughts!

No Doubt About It &mdash 01/30/06 - 02:12:14 PM
When you put a song together, it is well thought out.

Composition and arrangement is top-notch. I like the tempo change throughout. And your guitar soloing is very strong and deliberate , yet not overdone.

Good stuff.

A definite keeper:)

Excellent &mdash 01/30/06 - 03:35:05 PM
I enjoyed the previous version and enjoy this one as well. I especially like
the vocal's attitude, the lyrics and the forward, strong drum track - but
everything is very, very good.

Sharp songwriting and production. &mdash 01/30/06 - 05:13:34 PM
This reminds me of lenny kravitz, both the vocal melodies and the inherent "funkiness" of the song. A very professional sounding and well produced piece of music - I could tell after about 15 seconds that this was not a standard-run-of-the-mill GB creation. I wasn't surprised to see your super list of equipment, which you clearly put to good use. I would be interested in seeing a picture of your custom pyramid cabinet.

Great work as usual..!!! &mdash 01/30/06 - 08:51:43 PM
This is another one of your awesome tunes. The colorful array and use of instruments is natural coming from you. I wouldn't expect anything less, this song is another masterpiece to add to your collection. This is one of many other masterpieces. I really get caught up in this piece. The heart and soul put in this is really in your face, and vibrant. I listen to your tunes because the way the transitions and how the instruments are placed are particular, and that is what makes this song what it is.

I'll say it... &mdash 01/31/06 - 11:16:14 AM
I like this version 10 times better than the last one. And I liked the last
one. But, this version sounds like you finally managed to transform
what you may have been hearing in your mind's ear to audible candy.
Sweet. Professional. Better than radio ready. Thx for sharing it here.

I'll say it... &mdash 02/18/06 - 08:24:25 AM
I agree fully.
this version seems to suit the lyrics better, more emotion and attitude. The last
version had too many elements in it, i had a hard time creating depth in the mix.
This time I stripped it down and tried to let the song speak for itself. It seems
like it's working.
Plus, I new i had to do a new version cuz my non-musician wife hated
the previous version i had of this. when she heard this new one she was satisfied
and then i knew i was on the right track.

thanks for stopping by!

nice! &mdash 02/01/06 - 02:38:20 AM
this has a real nice kravitz touch, specially the solo. The vocals are very
professionally produced, and the acoustic gives it just the right balance
between live/digital. this is really well done, thanks for a great song!

Great work &mdash 02/01/06 - 06:34:09 PM
I hadn't heard the original version - so this is a nice introduction, solid package! The groove is wicked, you've got a great voice and the harmonies are slick - you remind me of a cross between Dan Walters and Genesis area Peter Gabriel - a cheeky mix, and you pull it off. I agree with another PG - the vocal effects seem sort of syrupy in the beginning, but they work great once you fire up the engines. Great build-up - smokin' guitar licks - love the line "your desires were the trinity" - but I sort of wanted to know what those three desires might've been. A lot of the religious imagery is fine when it sort of grounds itself in a sort of obvious comparison of human nature. Altar=body, baptism=kisses, ring clear to me. Would love to pare the mystery of a trinity of desires! With the great vocals and harmonies delivering the hook, it would've been great to hear you end the tune with that instead of so suddenly - the ending really seems to want something more. But DAMN - this is a great tune!

... &mdash 02/04/06 - 06:24:56 PM
I remember really liking an earlier version of this. I haven't gone
back to listen to it, but my memory is telling me that this one is
much more sophisticated in production and performance...and I
think I like it better this way. It is immaculate and well-conceived
throughout. Nice harmonic passage in the solo at the end.

The very end sounded like you weren't sure what to do with it...very
unlike the rest of the song, wich sounds like everything is deliberate.

Smoothly done &mdash 02/11/06 - 10:02:30 PM
A nice groove, and, best of all, very professional sounding. I've not
uploaded any of my work yet (dammit most of it's on DAT tape), but the
greatest thing I like to hear, if I earn it, is that my song sounds
professional.

This piece certainly does.

Lyrically and musically! &mdash 02/13/06 - 09:56:44 AM
I like the detune effect in the guitars. Adds some great sense of
dissonance.

Drums are wonderfully placed and compressed in your mix.

Also great job with the bass guitar.

I would like for the vocals in the very beginning to be just a tad louder
and stronger, but that is just my take on it.

All around great piece of writing, lyrically and musically!

I remember this song &mdash 02/14/06 - 06:00:40 AM
I recognized the theme before I recognized the tune. This is so
professional sounding. You always give a fantastic vocal performance,
and I love the intensity you bring to this song. You need it to match the
guitar and it's all there. Beautifully presented, passionately performed.

Your really good &mdash 02/15/06 - 01:33:14 AM
I listened to some of you tunes after you posted a replly to micing guitars or going diret. All your stuff is really polished sounding. Th e way you vary dynamics and textures is amazing. I love the guitar tone you capture. These songs sound like they were done in a big studio. Keep up the good work.

Your really good &mdash 02/18/06 - 08:35:32 AM
thanks so much for stopping by.
guitar tone is something i've been working on since i was 15. reading in all these
magazines about how mic'ing an amp is the only way to go (back then there
weren't many options) and about mic placement, tube selection, speaker
selection etc. So when i first starting recording, i'd mic up my amp, record, listen
back and i was overly dissapointed in the guitar tone. I was expecting instant
studio slickness and got a crappy tone instead. Funny thing is, 20 years later, all
i seem to do is stick a mic anywhere in front of my speaker cab and hit record.
all of a sudden my guitar sounds decent. don't know what changed but thanks
for stopping by. don't stop experimenting and striving for that perfect tone!

nice strat sound &mdash 02/18/06 - 08:56:54 AM
thanks for the compliment on my strat sound.
just to clarify though, i wan't playing either of my strats on this. I was playing a
G&L ASAT classic which is like a Telecaster but much better. For those who don't
know - G&L is the company Leo Fender and George Fullerton started after Leo
sold the Fender company to CBS. G&L uses machines originally designed and
built by Leo Fender himself. Hand made in Fullerton, CA they are beautifully
exquisite instruments. I love my G&L, can you tell?

Brush up your Kainz &mdash 02/22/06 - 10:55:21 AM
I wish I'd been the first person to say "This sounds a bit like Lenny
Kravitz" but I've been beaten to it by about a month. Ah, well, I
still thought it. Not getting Kravitz and Kainz mixed up
throughout the rest of this comment will now be my biggest
challenge. Perhaps I should just avoid mentioning either name to
be on the safe side. The production & performance (particularly
the guitar work) is first class. I like how I can hear elements of
prog rock scattered amongst this otherwise very bluesy number.
Here's what I said for the first version I heard on MJ: "Tip-top
production and playing as ever but something doesn't quite work
for me. Not quite sure what it is though. Maybe it needs more
musical oomph, if you know what I mean. And I agree with
previous MacJammers about the metaphors being a bit over-
done." Well, the musical oomph I asked for has definitely been
added and you've already explained about the metaphor so I guess
that's most of my original points addressed. That's what I call
service! ;-)
