Very nice... &mdash 02/01/06 - 12:26:14 PM
Very nice job in creating tonal variations on a theme. I especially liked the
underlying bass line (midway in the piece).

Now that's what I'm talking about. This piece definitely conveys with it some imagery. Imagery of a caravan of Middle Eastern bedouins trailing the desert, or even a cinematic ancient greece.
As mentioned before, the tonal variations are done very well and the percussive elements are well placed, and your transitions are effective. I would have liked just a little more fanfare, but that's just me.
You've basically nailed is as far as the structure is concerned, now let's hear you embelish it with more strings, harps, trumpets. I know you can do that.
Keep it up, and thanks for your kind review again!

Great...great! Thanks for your motivating remarks! It's funny you should
mention fanfare; as I listened to your last piece, then listened to mine again, I
could "hear" portions where I thought some brass emphasis could be placed
and made more effective with changes in dynamics. I might tinker with this
project some more; might move on for awhile. Regardless, you've given me
great satisfaction knowing that the "imagery" I saw was communicated to
another person through my music. Isn't that the meaning of it all? Thanks
again!!

Very solid. Nice melody. There is competence in this track, altho it
doesn't rise to the stirring emotional level of "Child" and "Long Road
Home." Very nice arrangement.

You're right. I think I have grown considerably with each post, and this was the first attempt at any orchestral arrangement. Since then, I continue to listen, observe, learn, and pray for the inspiration to write something even better each time. Thank you for taking the time to stop by!

A worthy post! &mdash 08/03/06 - 08:04:52 PM
Ever since Lawrence of Arabia I've had a soft spot for Arabian tinged
music. Via Maris has a clearly stated and appealing Middle Easten type
theme but at times it seemed a little cautious. I'd love to see you
develope it even more, take a more chances and play with it and varied
it a even more than you did.
You always have a good feel for orchestration and I like your choices
here but the quality of the intruments could be better.
I%u2019m also playing with Jampack4 and have tried modifying its
instruments and found you can really perk them up and enhance their
character enormously. I%u2019m far from an expert but I think it's worth
doing here.
Of course this is one of your earlier submissions and you've probably
explored a lot since. If you ever have the time I think Via Maris is worth
going back to and could be made even better. A worthy post and
thanks for you thoughtful reviews of my work.

Excellent suggestions and wonderful critique! I think I will revisit this...I've learned quite a bit from all of you since I did this and I'd like to make this jump a little more.
