Cavernous sadness &mdash 02/03/06 - 09:44:40 AM
What do you get when you put six Mystifieds under a Moon Dome?

Wish I could do this. Imagine how odd it would sound? But you have
the pipes to pull it off. A very lovely, sad, "emptiness."

Beautiful.

I dunno, Tom....maybe you could do something similar?
Just record a few tracks of your voice (in your own range ;)
and send them over. I'll do the mixing--
mwhahahahaha!

I've long been a 'fan' of film soundtracks--I like to play them while writing or working on visual art--so I probably reflect that in much of my music.

Thanks again for your comments here.

I stand before a lone cavern. The darkness blocks the way in. I hear music
- music from inside. I break through this dark curtain of hindrance. I cut
my leg on jagged rocks.

It was worth it.

Beautiful.

Thanks, cj.
It's really nice to get comments and feedback, and the feedback on this is a
little unexpected.
I did this track fairly quickly--only 2-3 hours from start of recording to
completion of mixing, and I had to re-record over some unfortunate pops in
the mic in a couple tracks.

It takes me by surprise how sometimes the more 'intuitive' of my
compositions, the ones that come at the spur of the moment and don't take a
lot of time, seem to work, nonetheless.
So your comments here are really appreciated.

You're such a ray of sunshine on this site :)

I'm glad you liked this piece. It was experimental as far as mixing goes, and
that took most of the time, but the vocals were intuitive--improvised without
rehearsal--and definitely deeply heartfelt. I'm glad you hear that.

Thanks, Cantor!

I really like the Jam Pack 4 presets. They have some wonderful mixes that work
well with both voice and the orchestral instruments. And it's fun to take a preset
and fiddle around with the reverb and echo settings, which is what I've done
more of recently, saving the ones I'd like to use again under different names.
I also use the AUMatrixReverb on the individual tracks, which expands them and
gives them greater depth in a 'wash' of sound--as in this particular track.

Cool &mdash 02/04/06 - 09:00:21 AM
I went through a phase of ethereal gothic music back in the early 90s.
This would have fit right in. Now it has that movie soundtrack heart
jerking quality. Our hero has fallen!

I like this stuff. Hard to tell if it's all a capella or if there is some
instruments in there. Not that it matters, just find myself straing to
figure out if it was all done by voice.

I like it. I need to consider a Jampack, but feel like it may paralyze me. I
already spend more time going though looking for a fitting sound than
I do actually making anything.

Well done.

Thank you for stopping by for a listen, cj.
I did change the genre to A Cappella after your comments. It is all voice, just
very 'swirled' from lots of echo and reverb setting adjustments.
As a vocalist, I have enjoyed experimenting with vocal sound and what settings
do to affect color--sort of like mixing paints.
I've sung for years in normal room acoustics (no mics)--so the entire recording
and mixing process has been something of an adventure for me.

Thanks again for your comments.

In the cathedral of... &mdash 02/04/06 - 09:44:02 AM
the soul... be still, and know that He is God.

Reality and the mysteries of creation reach beyond our finite
thoughts and words. In this beautiful choral piece your voice
is the wordless music that captures both the longing of the soul
for meaning and rest, as well as that spark of the divine that is
always so near. Your singing here is a moment offered to my
mind and heart to touch that reality and mystery found in Him.

Thanks.

This song has the quaity of a Gregorian Chant. You have a lovely voice and know how to use it. I'm in the market for a new mic and will buy the Berringer B1 after llistening to this. Not that the mic makes your voice. You would probably sound good singing through a tin can lol. I on the other hand need all the help I can get. I have jam pack 4 also, but being an old blues rocker I haven't been able to use many of the loops in it. You are very creative with them

Truly beautiful! &mdash 02/04/06 - 11:47:26 PM
I'm not a religious person, but there are special places for me in Europe
(France in particular, but other places too) which hit me between the
eyes spiritually. One of these (corny as it sounds) is Sainte Chappelle
in Paris, others vary, but are often much smaller country churches, like
"St Joan's" church in Domremy. Another place is the Ortakoy mosque
in Istanbul (still theoretically in Europe), and of course Agia Sophia in
Istanbul's Sultanahmet area. Listening to this took me back to the
feelings I get in these places - strangely mystical, centuries of history
living in the walls, and the almost tangible prayers of the millions of
people who have passed through the doors.
I really don't know how you get this into an mp3 Mysti - this is a truly
beautiful piece! Thanks so much for posting it.

The ethereal envelope &mdash 02/06/06 - 09:53:21 AM
I went to Mass at a French church (St. Louis in St. Paul, MN) yesterday
and they had a wonderful choir of men and women singing traditional
and ancient hymns and chants. The most moving piece was done by
three women standing in a triangle face-to-face in the front right wing
of the cruciform church. Their voices blended perfectly as they sang an
ancient Latin chant. Very modal and ethereal....just like your work,
Mystified. What have been your sources of inspiration? Or has this
sprung from your heart without listening to Medieval or liturgical
models?
