Description:
Anyone else catch the state of the union last week?

Are songs like this too sappy to endure? I hate to ruin perfectly good melodies with the you-know-who-speak. Please lend us your ear and opinion.

Lyrics:
The Free and The Brave

Here we go
sit back for the ride
they're shaking hands
and stoking home fires
putting on pins and checking their hair

Now they're standing in rows
and towing a line
every year it get s harder to buy
what they do
and what they say but
everything changes when you get home.

The economy's strong
like coffee in a cup
numbers don't lie
they just don't always add up
let me assure you it's good down to the last drop.

Another round of applause
for our plan of attack
a tear in the eye
and a pat on the back
If you ask them we
never had it so good but
everything changes when you get home.

Oh, say?
Does that star-
spangled banner yet wave
over the land
of the free and
the home of the brave?

Oh say
does it wave
over the free
and the
brave?

Thanks for listening
Thanks for your time
The state of the Union
is doing just fine
a moment of silence
for the ones not coming home.

A prayer for the wounded
hungry
and poor
the good book says you'll
inherit the earth
but
Everything changes
Everything changes
everything changes
when you get home.

Rich and unusual textures &mdash 02/09/06 - 05:22:22 PM
Kelli you have a fantastic voice - I love listening to your stuff - and I
really enjoyed the way your voice is used here. Same goes for Jim,
don't know much of your output but I've been impressed with what I've
heard.

I especially liked the juxtaposition of this laid back acoustic vibe with
the State of the Union address (does Dubya understand what a
profound decision is?)

Nice one.

awww &mdash 02/09/06 - 05:36:28 PM
Thanks y'all. I appreciate it. Thanks for listening!! Jim did all the
fantastic music. Of course, the song was going to be about something
completely different, but ended up wanting to be these words. I woke
up from a nap and realized I could record a stream of the "address"
and edit it in. I recorded parts that resonated with me, and Jim fine-
tuned the use of dubya. thanks, for your comments.

Interesting Combination &mdash 02/10/06 - 09:18:17 AM
Excellent singing and I like the juxtaposition of the song with the
samples. The bass drum and bass sound a bit too boomy in my
headphones; otherwise the production sounds fine to me.

Interesting Combination &mdash 02/10/06 - 10:20:54 AM
Actually this is sort of a rough mix, I've been tweaking it a bit and will post that
as soon as I can get it done. I've been real busy lately. I'm not married to the
bass levels so I will try to pay some attention to that. I may add an electric guitar
track and I have been changing some levels of the vocals and edited the samples
a bit. Thanks for the comment!

nice &mdash 02/10/06 - 10:23:44 AM
this is great and I really like the lyrics and the samples are frackin
perfect!!!! Nice mellow recording and good chord choices. Your
vocals remind me a little of Sarah Jahn....Really like the "can"
sound on the vocals in the middle....very floaty and light with a
charming bit of menace....peace

Strong, confident stuff &mdash 02/10/06 - 10:47:25 AM
This is a brilliantly immersive sound you have here. Just a hint of the
avante garde which adds Intrigue without going over the top.

One your strongest tracks.

not ruined with the you-know-who speak. it's a nice counterpoint.

perfectly done - the kind of folk music we don't hear anymore, but
should!

Hi Kelli,

This is the first time I have listened to you and Jim and have to say I'm truly impressed.

You have a gorgeous voice and combined with Jim's playing and the use of samples, produces an original, excellent track. Great to see experimentation within the genre.

Top stuff and thank you guys for sharing.

Yours impressed,

great production &mdash 02/15/06 - 08:27:40 PM
percussion sounds great, rhythm vox are nicely done - the melody is pop
sensible. topical lyrics stand out a bit at times - i find myself wanting to
hear the vocal hook "everything changes" throughout the song.

My favorite State of the Union address &mdash 02/22/06 - 01:26:26 AM
Actually the only way I WOULD listen to it. Beautifully written and sung! Too many times these kinds of songs slam you over the head but this one, while opinionated, I didn't find preachy. Wonderful production as well.

just great &mdash 02/22/06 - 02:32:46 PM
And there's nothing more to add. Wonderful song and arrangements, lyrics that are to the point (and that's maybe even a big understatement, but forgive me being a European son :-), great and very convincing vocals. Ah, that's what we're all here for, aren't we?

What a statement &mdash 03/13/06 - 12:02:00 PM
Kelli, this is such an excellent song. I was very moved by it. Great lyrics, great production and wonderful singing. Whoever is running against Bush in the next election, should have this playing in the background. This is truly a protest song that draws people in instead of alienating them.
Wonderful job you two! When's he album coming out? I'm in.

Man In The Grey Flannel Suit &mdash 03/22/06 - 09:27:49 AM
Marvelous writing, production, performances. Real, next door sort of
truth, with just the right touch of psychedelic White Rabbit sort of internal
mindbending disillusionment. Did you eve see the old black and white
movie, Man In The Grey Flannel Suit, with Gregory Peck? One of the best
movies about this issue. There is something so right about this track,
can't say enough praise.

Great writing Kelly &mdash 06/19/06 - 09:00:01 AM
I'm a sucker for someone who can turn a phrase, every thing else is
exellent, right on the money, all the ellement work toward framing a
great song... the percusion, guitar sound, vox and mix are sounding
radio ready to me... I love the undercurrent of sadness that lurks right
under the surface of what almost sounds like a happy song...

very good work

Lovely voice and... &mdash 06/20/06 - 10:35:35 AM
AMAZING mix. Wow! Great songwriting and lovely voice and chorus. I was particularily impressed how you managed to keep the sound organic with an "accoustic" feel throughout. And with the whole song being so charming and soothing it's really quite an effective piece making you ponder about the world and a whole lot of things...like a hopeful lament from the heart. Mesmerizing!

Good Colab &mdash 07/17/06 - 12:50:39 PM
Love the acoustic guitar, great lyrics, you do have a beautiful voice so I didn't like the added effects on it in the one part. Would much rather hear your true clean voice throughout. Maybe I'm just more of a naturalist. Good smooth mix all the way through and the Bush Jr. quote clips were added in nicely too. It does give you a sad feeling, which is a good thing because it is touching.

I also think this would work just as well if not better without Bush in there, yet I undrstand why he had to be in there. It would still be interesting to hear both a version with and without him.

Another Great One &mdash 10/31/06 - 03:34:17 PM
I just love the harmony on this one. Your voice has a tone that just can't be learned, a natural wonder.
