Description:
My first attempt at mic'ing my guitar instead of plugging it in. It was supposed to be a nice little acoustic ballad and it turned into this...
Vocals, Acoustic Guitar, Keyboards: Me
No loops.
Lyrics:
I WOULD HAVE BEEN A COWARD
Stacey K. Black
You left through the front door
you walked out into the sun
I would have been a coward if it were me
you didn't look behind you
to see if I would cry
I would have been a coward
if I were the one to leave
I'd sneak out at midnight
and take all our photographs
I wouldn't leave you anything but the frames
I wouldn't want to face you
and look you in the eye
I'd be such a coward if it were me
But you, you've always been brave
and I will always be afraid.
You told me all your reasons
and they were all spot on
it's true I never let you speak your mind
I would have been a coward
I would have been a coward
I would have been a coward if it were me.

really great &mdash 02/11/06 - 09:14:16 AM
You seem to pay attention to detail a lot, and this sounds pretty good
and the guitar sounds nicely mic'ed. There is a wobbly sound to it
perhaps like there's a slight chorus effect on it. And the guitar sound is
a little thin when compared with the vocals, but all in all it is a pretty
good job on the guitar.
It's a great song and the vocals are stellar. Sounds like you are using a
good mic. [ Reply to This ]

Thanks! Yes, I did some tweaking on the guitar track with GB, and I am in love
with my mic! I actually spent a little money on that piece of equipment!
Thanks so much for listening and your great comments! [ Reply to This ]

Sometimes adding a chorus effect on guitar can thin out the sound, and you
might want to counter that by boosting a little in the bass and mid EQ range.
But it is good for masking a not perfect guitar tuning at times. Best though to
make sure you are dead-on with the tuning first. The GB tuner is pretty darn
good for the last minute tuning check.

I'm working on improving the guitar. Thanks again for all the advice! [ Reply to This ]
Very Impressive &mdash 02/11/06 - 11:50:58 PM
I really like your song. All of the essentials are there: your
arrangement, the lyrics, your voice and your harmonies.
It's not always easy to do a song without a lot of instruments to back
you up, but you did a very good job.
The guitar sound was fine. I guess we could always make it sound
better, but the important thing is that it enhanced the song and didn't
take from it.

Wow! &mdash 02/12/06 - 08:18:35 AM
What a great voice you have, both in style and delivery. Very pretty guitar
writing and playing too. Oh, and great lyrics... guess I can't complain
about anything here. The starting melody (major triad) that stands apart
from, but fits so nicely with the rest of the song, seemed a really fresh
piece of songsmithing... I certainly wouldn't have thought of it, "if it were
me." Tasteful bits of echo, and that "ahhh" chorus was stunning. I have
to admit now, on second listen, I would like the guitar to have a little
more bass EQ. But this was a sweetly sad song that was beautifully
delivered. Welcome to Macjams, fellow Californian!

You have a great voice and it was nicely recorded. It's a lovely song; well
written musically and lyrically. The guitar does sound pretty thin. It
sounds like a combination of things, from playing to production. I'd like
to hear the chords more confidently strummed, including more bass
notes to fill them out. The "wobbly" effect on the guitar actually sounds
like what happens to audio when you slow it down in GB. Perhaps you
played it faster and then decided to make it slower after the fact?
Anyway, you have the voice and the musical sense working for you. This
is great stuff even though it could use some work on the guitar. [ Reply to This ]

Thank you very much for your great comments. I am working on that guitar as
we speak. It's easy for me to get someone to come over and play for me, but I
want to do it myself, even though, as you can tell, I'm not the greatest guitar
player. However, I know I can pull it off. I'll re-post when it's done.
In the meantime, thanks again for listening!

Great lyrics... &mdash 02/16/06 - 08:36:15 AM
...in the intimate tradition of a tune like this, I can deal with the
guitar... It sounds "immediate" to my ears...
Your voice is exceptional, and you match your nice pitch and tone with
a good sense of how to phrase a song for emotional impact and
connection... And it never sounds contrived...
The main lyrical thing, built on the title phrase, is as good as it gets.
Period.
You're bringing some really first class songwriting to the site, stacey.
The whole wrap-around...lyrics, melody, performance...

Beautiful Voice &mdash 02/17/06 - 10:06:18 AM
Your voice definitely stands out as the finest thing about this song, with the lyrics a close second. I love this sort of introspective songwriting, all of my favorite artists do this sort of thing.
What kind of mic did you use by the way? It sounds very nice.
Oh, I also liked your artwork as well. Is it original?

My mic is as audio technica (is that spelled right?) It's the one other piece of equipment I spent some money on, other than my computer! Thank you very much for your compliments. I really appreciate that!
