Sunny Beaches (w/zallaz & TEXASFEEL)

Get Flash to see this player.

Description
Zallaz sent me a bubbly little bass line with drums and guitar that he'd passed on to TEXASFEEL who'd added some really cool guitar parts. The song was called Sunny Beaches and I always like to at least try to keep the concept of the music, if not the title, so I asked Kevin what he'd been thinking when he wrote it. He told me that it came about on a dreary day in one of the most land-locked parts of England and that he was just thinking of being somewhere sunny.

Right before I wrote the lyrics I had a conversation with a single friend about how she gets bored sometimes and the song went in that direction. It's not that hard for a chick in Seattle to write about wanting to be someplace sunny, either.

Once the vocals were on the song, TF took the track back and added some very cool new guitars, as well as some backwards guitar.

Zallaz and Tex were dream collaborators and you can check out more of their music here:

Thanks John and Kevin; this was truly a bunch of fun. Thanks, also to Mr. Alley-oop for the song artwork!

Lyrics
Sunny Beaches

Stuck inside this grey-streaked window
called around but no one's by the phone
ate a bag of stale marshmallows
made a dog with my hand and some shadows.

Look and long outside my window,
where I am's not where I want to go
No, no, no

Closed my eyes and conjured sunshine,
you and me with sand between our toes

Skipping down the sunny beaches,
both of us eating peaches.
The juice runs down our arms,
ooh la la

Look and long outside my window,
where I am's not where I want to go.
No, no.

Rain streaks down and breaks the reverie,
there's no you and not much left of me.
My tiny world like a still life
hope grows duller than a butter knife.

Look and long
Look and long
Look and long

Various and sundry Macs. I used a Rode NT-1a to record vox (one of the nicest birthday presents I've ever received). I hope Kevin and John will chime in with their set-ups if anyone is interested in knowing more.
Software:
I think we all used different things. I used GB 2, Kev used GB 3 and John used the very frightening Logic.

thank-you, lots!!
texasfeel took my initial idea and ran with it, totally transforming it,
thank-you TF! then Ledeb adds her sublime lyrics/vox, now although
Ledeb dont mention it she toiled for a good while on this track, way
beyond the call of duty in fact, appreciated a lot.

A good pop song is a good song
I'd say the combination of the three of you at work on this song was a
complete success. The track cruises along with a light-hearted feel, the
creative guitar work provides just the right edge and delivers nice texture
which helps carry the listener's interest.

On top of all that is a sweet, honest, vulnerable, natural vocal track that is
utterly charming and disarming. My guess, Lisa, is that you'll not have
many more moments in your life when hope will grow "duller than a
butter knife..."

Congratulations to all three participants in this killer pop tune.

Peachy!
Great song...and a cool collaboration. My only crit would be I would like to
hear the guitar bits slightly clearer in the mix (without smothering the vox
of course). The drums are a little repetitive too and high in the mix (on my
phones at least!). But the song is lovely and lyrical...Lisa's vocals are as
beguiling as ever..the guitar work is very nice too.

I completely love backwards guitar...
...and I want to hear how it was done!...

I really like the guitar tracks on this song.

I'll go along with the previous comments about the drum track, which
does sound sort of 'generic drum machine', although it didn't
particularly bother me... in a song like this, there are other things to
listen to...

The magic of the song, for me, coalesces around the ledebutant lyric,
which, in the manner of its kind, goes where it needs to go without
being tied to particular pop song patterns, and manages, also in the
manner of its kind, to combine a sunshiney, even erotic, love of life
with touch of longing that is never melodramatic... These are all good
things in my book...

And there are some great lyric bits; I was going to quote a few, but
they're all through the song. I love the three word phrase, "look and
long"... A lot of power in three words...

Congratulations to Lisa on the NT-1a, which is probably responsible
for more breaths being audible than was true before. Better mic leads
to compulsory improved mic technique... It sounds great, though...

As with Cydniko's "Duel", this is one of those collabs where "the tale
grew in the telling"... You can still hear that "bubbly bass line", and
then each contribution has its spot...

Really nice, folks.

Very beach-like!
I like the way you did the music. You've done it again, you know. And now
I understand why there's an icon of a peach at the beach. I like the
beginning where the bass comes in, and then there's this new instrument
that comes in--yeah, that's pretty cool!

And I'd prefer to be at the beach right now, instead of going to school!

Sincerely,

thepeep

GOOD Morning, Folks
It is 0830, here, but had to look before the phone takes over. Wow!

You open the page to the Graphic (Mr. Alley-Oop) and the snow drifts
outside vanish, just beautiful.

The "bubbly" song then sweeps you away. The images in the Lyric are
so distinct and tangible it takes you right there. The inimitable Vocal
of Ms. LeDeb beckons you along with charm, wit, and intimacy (breathy
or not, and not a distraction on this rig).

The Kit seems a bit forward in the Mx, and while not complex in
nature, certainly in keeping with the "bubbly" character that overcomes
the suggested melancholy angst of the "longing".

At the same time, John's modesty places the mid-song guitar voice a
bit far back, which costs some clarity on this set-up.

However. I Love the piece and feel it is really Together. Such fine
Talent displayed from corner to corner. Superbly Done Collab, in my
opinion!

Thanks for a Great start to the Day!

Best to Each of You,
rtc

Just in case
Just in case anyone was wondering. I used Guitar Rig 2 as my plug-in. It's quite the processor hog and trying to control backwards while playing forward is quite the treat.

I'm just happy that I had the chance to participate on this piece. Kevin emailed me a little over a month ago and asked me to put some guitar to this tune. At that time I didn't even know who he was so I threw something together and sent it his way. Later after some research I found out that Kevin was quite the collaborator and maybe I should have applied myself a bit more. About a week ago Kevin shot me an update with Lisa's lyrics and vocals on the song and it just blew me away. I then begged to get the song back to redo the guitar part(s). At the time I was playing around with psychedelics on one of my brothers songs and thought the backwards guitar would add a dreamy feel to this tune.

I feel Kevin has a knack for coming up with catchy tunes and had picked the right person to write the lyrics and sing this song. Lisa is definitely the star here and not only do I love her voice but I like her breathing too. Right on!

Great art work Alley-oop.

Regards,
John

This is a wonderful song - especially the lyrics, vocals and backwards

The Fritters said 4323 days ago (February 15th, 2006)
funny...
but it seems end too soon... The I-IV chord progression doesn't seem
to go too far, but in my humble estimation, on a Sunny Beach you're
liable to be inclined to just sit and sun. I do wish there was a bit more
of a dramatic change in the song somewhere, but that's just me, all in
all it's pretty cagey way of capturing the feeling of longing for change.
Which is what the song is about, after all. Excellent backwards guitar.
I'm always trying to do that with my Boss DD-20 and it's a lot harder to
do as well as John does it here. I like the audible breaths, it makes the
vocal sound even more real, though a way around it is to cut out the
pauses between lines and eliminate those, but sometimes that's way
more trouble than it's worth and like I said, I think it's just another way
to make it sound like a real human is by leaving in the breaths.
Very good! Collaborations can be remarkably satisfying when they
work out, n'est pas?
cheers,
Jim

how do you do it?
What a delightfully poignant song, as usual... I have no idea how you
take a background like this and transform it so well with the perfect
lyrics and singing. I think TexasFeel and Zallaz did a great job with the
music, everything feels appropriately "longing", like you're anxious to
go outside. But your style of singing and the choice of words are the
perfect addition to this... somewhat innocent at first (hand-puppets),
then arousing (eating peaches), then growing jaded and almost
resigned (hope grows duller...), I can read multiple layers into lyrics,
and it feels like you put a lot of thought into them. Also, that Rode mic
does wonders, it sounded like you were right inside my head singing,
crystal clear... very nice. And Alley-Oop, nice peach ya got there. BTW,
you can each have a peach at our beach, but it is best to bring a napkin
or a bathing suit.
ttfn,
Drakonis

Well, it's 61 and windy here outside
(that's all the winter we get in New Mexico!), but inside it's a balmy 90 as I
wind down the road, top down, breeze all around, listening to this
summery little ditty. Reminds me of Suzanne Vega if she had ever written
a fun song. The song begs for a chorus (I know I can here one lurking in
there.), but at the same time I'm a big fan of non-traditional song
structure. And Ledeb's voice. And the swirly electronics. And the guitar.

Life's a beach
I should know I live near one (but sometimes it rains and even snows... )
This is a lovely song and I really like the lyrics - I'm not so sure about the
arrangement, perhaps the guitar needs to be used with more restraint and
maybe a bridge would bring a little space. In short, the tune and lyrics
are strong but I feel the production and arrangement aren't quite there.

sounds pretty good to me
I like this song a lot. The guitar part s are excellent, although they do get a noodly in parts. The vocal is very sweet and very Beth Orton-ish, which is a definite plus. A bit of pitch correction here and there wouldn't go amiss though.

The main weakness is the drum part. The sounds used are good, but could be mixed better, with perhaps a little variation at criitcal part of the song (end of verse, bridge/chorus). To be fair though, this is my main problem too. I've never got into drum programming with the result that my track slack variety..

On the whole guys this is great. Keep it up and I look forward to hearing mreo from you.

Just returning back from Georgia, the peach state, I was still in longing

Nice poppy song Lisa - your voice reminds me a lot of Liz Phair here (a

longing for sun). Love the backwards guitar John - must investigate
this further. I don't find a problem with the drums, they're just there,
and drive everything along nicely. Excellent colab, on an almost
perfect alt pop song.

not bad but
I could really use some variation in this song. I know it's a
collaboration, so it's difficult to establish verse and a chorus
because the lyrical structure got added last. Still it'd make all the
difference with this peice. It's a nice concept, but it needs more
structure, and FOR SURE some variance in the melody. Just a little
constructive (I hope) critisicm.

not bad but
What you've mentioned is definitely the piece that, for me, is missing with the
song, too (and since it's my responsibility, I don't feel bad saying it). I had
hoped, while I was working on this, that I would find a second melody,
something for a chorus, but I got stuck on this melody and could never hear
another one, for some insane reason. I probably should have sat on the song
a little longer, given my brain some space and come back to it, but I didn't
because I tend to be very perfectionistic, and I have been trying to use
songwriting as a way to cure myself of some of those tendencies. I like the
song, but I do definitely agree that having a chorus, or at least melody
variation would improve things. Thanks for the very honest, and useful
feedback.

Sorry, just clearing my throat there from lack of use. I'm hoping this marks the beginning of the end of my MJ hiatus, and only you, Miss Debutant, could be the one to force me back in.

THAT being said, I like the song, but I do feel like a variation on the vocal theme is needed badly. The mix and instrumentation is just perfect for my ears. Actually, the guitar work is especially outstanding. And my, that Rode is one clear and beautiful birthday present! But I'd love to hear some pop harmonies, or a little theme and variation action happening. In general you sound wonderful, and I may be going crazy in my old age, but I could've sworn I heard a few pitchy notes in the first verse.

Overall, fun tune. You're the woman. Sorry for my delay in getting my lazy ass over to it!!

Cool as a summer afternoon
Ehhh ...one day I'll produce my stuff to be as good as this sounds. Great backing - love the noodling guitar through this. I love the lyrics to this ... 'Made a dog ...' is just such a wonderful image of boredom - sad and funny at the same time. But it also comes across with a great sense of longing and innocence, although the latter is partly in the wonderful way you've sung this. It's very simple and direct, and gels so well with the intent of the song.

How can I be bored when I've got your back catalogue to go through!

nice one
I get some Daniel Lanois vibes, with the ambient guitars and sounds in
the background, vocal still up front which is nice! This is right up my alley
I must say. I enjoy the singer very mucy - very nice voice. I love that the
song never "lands". It just keeps on going.....nice

Nice little pop tune, flash
from the past!

I like the mood this sets, wistful, great images, peaches and beaches pretty cool.

I hear a toodling flute in there, though. Must be in my head! Love to work with you some time....

Great!
The feeling here is very nice, great performance by all. Such a calm vocal from you and both (Texas and Zallaz) did a great job... smooth melody with a fine vocal. Great piece!

I've been writing songs since 2005, which I tried initially because GarageBand made it possible for me to play with music for the first time since college, and I found very quickly that I really loved songwriting and in my time here at Macjams, I've ... [see more]
