Nice cigarette lighter &mdash 02/19/06 - 06:32:12 PM
Glad to hear it again (the lighter). Ilya, this is a wonderful piece, the
way it builds, the use of "non-musical" sounds, the unison saxes, the
harmony saxes, the production, the energy, the jazz. Wow. Your
technique alone is enough to slay an old worn out sax player like me,
but the rest of this tune, saxes aside, is really excellent too. The
double-time near the end is especially fun. I will be interested to see
what kind of response this masterpiece gets on the "new" Macjams? But
from me - it gets a bunch of double digits. [ Reply to This ]

Thanks, Tom. It's a shame that it took me nearly half a year to make and post
this one...

Cool jams. Exceptionally cool stereo placement. Very, very spatial in a
physical and a musical sense. Loved it. I questioned the 10 rating when I
stopped by but this one deserves it and I'm adding to it. Favorite. [ Reply to This ]

Oh yeah, and downloaded too. I am awestruck. I'm not typically given to
superlatives but this, in my view, is one magnificent piece of work and quite
possibly the best I've ever heard on MJ. --- My Web site[ Reply to This ]

Great piece of work here, Ilya. I dig the syncopated and swing rhythms. Intricate and most unique.
The master of groove is back!
Kudos on the big marks.

I see you got hammered with snow up your way, too. We got 15 inches in southeastern PA, last week. [ Reply to This ]

Ironically, the piece had a working title "Brooklyn Heat" - I started it way back in
August, hence the icecream truck noise... Thanks for the praise. Jam on!

Too Cool for Words? &mdash 02/19/06 - 08:30:17 PM
I think this is an amazing track! Vert phat sound. Nice. It reminds me of
one of my favorite bands.
I want some lyrics to drive this one home! I can see it as a Morphine cut (if
that guy was still alive) or a Gallon Drunk song. I can imagine a bunch of
bands doing something with this, because it is too cool to be left alone.
Nice job! Great song. [ Reply to This ]
Too Cool for Words? &mdash 02/20/06 - 09:09:07 AM
Thank you... I like instrumental music because the meaning of each given piece
changes depending on the listener's perspective - words would somewhat "nail"
the meaning to the wall; however, the successful combination of both makes a
great piece... choices, choices.

Yup! &mdash 02/19/06 - 09:25:51 PM
Really great...does have that noir sound that Morphine used to get into,
but a lot more energetic. I like the pulse in the background, it has that
sort of stuttering ostinato that is very compelling. The harmonizing in
the sax lines is very cool...Mindblowing! [ Reply to This ]

Beautiful piece Ilya! The entry of the saxes is worth the entry price
alone!! That is so cool! Fantastic recording all round - you get such
depth from the saxes (not to mention their perfect placement in the
soundstage) that it's sometimes easy to ignore the excellent rhythm
section. This is real mastery - I am very impressed! Just occasionally I
want the drums to break into a more direct rhythm (and just as I'm
thinking that, it changes). Hmmmm......!

Thank you, I did work on the riff a lot, it was in a way somewhat like driving a
triangular peg into a square hole, but I wanted it there badly :) - took a lot of
banging :) - dropping into a swing at the end is sort of a resolution to the ever-
rolling main riff...

i've been wanting to move to new york for years and am really going to
try and do it this year i think.
so... wow! this definitely does capture the energy of the city and that
feeling that something unexpected could (and probably will) happen
soon. it's great!
you've got a beautiful tone, too... a sexy airiness.
the laid back way you kind of wander around melodies and notes
actually reminds me of miles davis... like something off of miles in the
sky in a way.
and then that dreamland toy at the end - brilliant! [ Reply to This ]

The 3's and 4's are probably jealousy votes. Or possibly they are sincere, in
which case the voters are jackasses. Fortunately, the tune is so good that it is
attracting lots of positive responses, enough to offset the few party poopers
who troll about this site anonymously. [ Reply to This ]

urban atmosphere &mdash 02/20/06 - 12:32:40 PM
Ilya, it HAS been awhile! ;)
Very nice return with this atmospheric rendition of Brooklyn. I can almost smell it!
Effective build-up from the beginning. I heard quite a few "clicks" in this section, seemed to be at the beginning of GB regions....which I wasn't sure were intentional. However, I *DID* hear your signature Zippo lighter at one point!
Your sax playing is great as always. I like the way you panned it on both sides. Nice echo effects.
The material towards the end was an interesting contrast -- I wish I'd heard that sooner on this longish track.
You have a unique way of creating a vivid atmosphere and mood in your pieces -- no-one else on this site does it quite like you. It makes for great, refreshing listening.
I hope you post your next one sooner than six months from now!
Best wishes. [ Reply to This ]

The Zippo is back! &mdash 02/20/06 - 08:54:17 PM
So lively. Great attitude and personality in this. The energy is captivating,
like an unfolding noire story. The flutes are a great counter to the sultry
sax, which you are brilliant with. Ham on rye in one hand and a stiletto in
the other. I love it! [ Reply to This ]

It never left... although I can't smoke anymore (explicitly prohibited after a little
procedure I went through a couple of weeks ago), I keep it as a musical
instrument :{)
Thanks!

Piece in the wind &mdash 02/21/06 - 03:34:07 PM
I really like the backup trail of wind that sounds like sustainment of the main player. Then you knock off the street traffic and the rest of the world toward the end to bring in the peace of that thing you love to do before you had to come back. Very enjoyable, nice work. Thanks for this.

it reminded me of what mingus did in tunes like "moaning" where he

feel and movement of the city. i liked how you used an ice cream truck

Sooooo Fine! &mdash 02/22/06 - 11:47:16 PM
I'd say that this is now my favorite piece at this site. I've listened to it over and over 'cause there's so much to hear in it (e.g., the Zippo click). It's on a par with your musical doppelganger, and fellow Brooklynite, J. G. Thrillwell [sic]. I think you should switch to a number 3-1/2 reed. Anything less is for wimps. [ Reply to This ]
