Description:
Ok. So this song is really different!
I've admitted that I have a storytelling streak in me, and this song is along that lines only in a very surrealistic way.

For those familiar with the movie, think "Something Wicked This Way Comes."

It sort of grew in degrees. I improvised the first track on the 'whirly' software instrument, then added the tuba, clarinet and doubled the whirly track to that of the orchestra harp.

When it came to the vocals, I recorded two lines of ambient background vox, and then added the main voice. The 'lyrics' were keywords I jotted down and then improvised melody and verse together, adding an 'echoing' vocal track.
Last came the violin strings, fixes on vocal tracks and mixing.

For those looking for a deep meaning in the words....well. There are none.
Surreal dreams....

PS: I hate clowns.

PPS--Thanks to Tom Atwood, who is the reason I posted this composition. He threatened to post the preview copy I sent him if I didn't post it myself

(For Mr. Larb)

Lyrics:
CIRCUS DREAMS

Lollipop ferris wheels,
Glass unicorn carousels
Cotton-candy clouds roiling in a licorice sky
Why?

And all for you
Spun sugar circus dreams
Circus dreams come true

And the music streams in these circus dreams
Round and round and round and up and down
Spun sugar serenade
The big top's grand parade....

And the music streams in these circus dreams
I wish for you that all your dreams come true.

But I am a Clown ;) &mdash 02/20/06 - 08:52:46 AM
This is pleasantly disconcerting.
I was going to comment about the muffled quality of the instrumentation,
but I'm guessing you did that on purpose to add to the dream-like
quality.

This one should be up
your alley, Cat (sorry for the pun ;)).

You are right Cat.. &mdash 02/20/06 - 10:09:40 AM
the words were meaningless to me. But your voice, once again, lifted me
above it all.

God bless,

Pricking of my thumbs... &mdash 02/20/06 - 10:22:23 AM
Love that movie (bought the DVD...) good old Ray Bradbury. And this
is deliciously dizzying music. Wonderfully written music, perfectly
provocative lyrics, and really well-sung, as usual. This reminds me a
lot of "Harry the Head" from the band "The Residents" (I'll send you the
3-D-rendered video sometime, if you've not seen it.) The initial harp
sounds slightly overdriven and muffled and off to the left, which
seemed not a good way to start the song, it sounded unintentionally
distorted at first. I would propose maybe starting with a longer intro,
with the harp centered and crisp, then having it slowly submerge and
distort and then start the song... take the listener down, don't start
there. Other than that, I have no critiques, I'm mesmerized by the
tarantulas crawling up your arms. Totally Faved and Downloaded.
What a great talent you have! I always smirk when I tell my children "Be
careful what you wish for..."

Drakonis

pretty and pretty surreal &mdash 02/20/06 - 11:16:25 AM
Nice dreamy mood you set here. Beautiful singing as usual. Your S's are
a bit whistley but not too distracting.

Haunted by clowns. Why do they taunt us so?

I really love this one Cat...you are really developing as a writer as well as
stunning vocalist! Well done

Odd angle &mdash 02/20/06 - 02:07:58 PM
I like this for many reasons. In fact, it is one of my favorites of yours.
It's like looking through a camera that is set up on a tripod with one
leg short. I like the risk. The risk of putting "cotton candy" and
"roiling" in the same line. And I like how quickly you threw this
together. It is an inspiration - especially the last verse with the odd,
disintegrating key change. What goes on in your little cat brain??

Yeah, somewhere between... &mdash 02/20/06 - 02:35:25 PM
...Something Wicked This Way Comes, my favorite Bradbury when I was
a teen... and maybe Needful Things...and even that bit of Big when
Tom Hanks is face to face with that gypsy in the machine...

With an echo from John Lennon's contributions to Sgt. Pepper... as
interpreted by the ghost of Kate Bush...

It's the quintessential "be careful what you wish for" song... by the end
all I know is that I am terrified at the thought that ANY of my dreams
might come true...

You pack a lot of mood and tone and story into something so simple...

Melted &mdash 02/20/06 - 06:23:52 PM
It's that circus triplet thing melted into strange funhouse mirrors. Actually, it feels like it would work well for some Circus Contraption acts (or some other equally demented show). Your voice sounds fantastic, and that's part of what helps this acheive maximum eerie. Very creative, different indeed! Keep going that way! Clowns are more puzzling than funny :)

Yikes! &mdash 02/20/06 - 09:49:52 PM
You're creeping me out Myst! (But in a good way!) Chalk me up an instant
fan. I adore the vocal here. Eiree ambience. I'll be looking over my
shoulder for vampires this evening.

What is it about clowns? &mdash 02/21/06 - 12:12:10 AM
What a great post Mysti! My daughter has always had a fear of clowns
- I'll play this for her this weekend and see how she likes it :) It is
definitely haunting, but also rather creepy. Your voice is just so
beautiful, and your writing and production superb, and definitely
"outside the pyramid" - I doubt anyone else would have come up with
something like this.
Thanks, Neil

I saw something at dark.
Your singing voice made the vision in my brains.

A spooky tapestry &mdash 02/21/06 - 04:00:20 PM
This is a moving painting, a musical Dorian Gray, beautiful imagery, Mysti - this is a nicely complex piece, with the major moments adding these sparkly little touches within all the dark textures. Scary hopefulness? The lyrics are nifty, because they are actually quite light and innocent, very pastel and sunny, and the music is like, sort of gothic! Love the new movement for the resolution - now THAT's bright and shiny! This is really superb and your voice is the pair of wings that everything flies upon, beautiful interpretation, Mysti. The one element that I'd like to hear more of would be a more emphasized dynamics in the vocals, some of those passages sung in a wispy, sort of "Sally", Catherine O'Hara kind of way would be quite the treat to hear! Like a mixture of operetta and sung-through musical theater. With all of the thematic elements already vividly pouring out of this piece, I think an emotional dynamic would be the soulful cherry on this delightful pie.

Lightness of being... &mdash 02/22/06 - 04:17:39 AM
I was a little weary when I heard the waltz kick in as this is a familiar
device with eerie sounding music - however you've done it with a
lightness of touch which overcame my initial resistence. Your singing is
wonderful and the main vocal is strangely (and pleasingly) warm given the
context - indeed a 'spun sugar serenade'. Well written, arranged and
produced - a goodie

Would just like to point out that when I wrote 'weary' I really meant 'wary'. I have
my illiterate moments...

circus dreams &mdash 02/22/06 - 11:09:45 AM
My first thought when I heard this, was that it has the sound and feel of a
Dead Can Dance song. You can hear the circus sound in a light way but
the singer 's voice also gives the song a middle eastern feel.

Thanks, Everyone! &mdash 02/26/06 - 12:45:13 AM
Thanks to everyone who took the time to listen to and comment on
this piece.
I've been keeping a lower profile hereabouts lately, maybe, but I've
been working on more music than ever.

This song is one of my recent 'experiments' in mixing and vocals, and
so your comments are really helpful, as well as appreciated.

* * * * * * * * *
Mungo: I knew it! You ARE a clown. Evil! ;)

RickW: I'm glad you liked it, even though the lyrics are quite surreal. :)

Drak: Hah! I should have known you had a penchant for tarantulas, the
Autumn People and Dark's Pandemonium Carnival. One of my all-time
fav movies, too!

PGreenstone: thanks for your comments. (And I don't get clowns,
either!)

stevel: thanks for the preview listen, and for all your really encouraging
comments. Glad you liked this one!

Tom: Ok. I'll say thank you for the 20th time: Thank you! :D

EJH: Thanks for your comments, especially regarding storytelling. I'm
beginning to see a correlation between my music and that... hmmm...

loyd vader: Thanks for taking the time to leave a comment...or was that
that you were compelled to leave one? ;)

PV: hahahah. Another clueless one for the clown camp. I don't feel
quite so bad now ;) Thanks for your comments.

The Conductor: Eerie ambience--I like that. I generally like to go for
inspiring song, but I'll take the occasional experimental/dramatic song.
Thanks for stopping by!

Neil: I hope your daughter enjoyed this. And yes..what is it about
circuses -- and clowns in particular -- that just seems ....creepy!

Tadashi: Thank you so much for listening--I hope your visions were
not tooooo scary :)

Lisa: Not to worry. I'm only scary when I lay the ambient effects on my
vox really thick! ;) otherwise, my voice is normal--like everyone else!

Bing: Thank you very much for your comments. Extremely helpful and I
do like the suggestion about incorporating more dynamics into the
vocals.

Komrade K: thanks for those comments--and for noticing the contrast
in the piece. I was going for that 'confusion' and incongruence to add
to the surrealism of the mood.

Industria: someone else mentioned Dead Can Dance when they heard
this piece. I will have to go listen... Thanks!

Cori Ander: thanks for your comments. I'm glad you like this--oh. And
no chickens were harmed in the making of this song! :D

Dunno... &mdash 02/26/06 - 04:25:01 PM
...what to say. I absolutely love everything about this song. Wonderful lyrics and (need I say?) vocals. I wish my ears were attuned enough to hear some of the critiques (if that's what they were) mentioned. I am left conjuring memories of dark nights, bright lights, and an aura of mystery. So, so beautifully done!

...that I don't delete my notification e-mails until I've listened to the
tracks. I definately wouldn't have wanted to miss this.
This is teriffic!
So dreamy, so dark, so unnerving. (My mind immediately went: Silent Hill.)
Your performance is absolutely wonderful in this and - well - everything
is.
A definate favorite and a download!

...there's just something about clowns...
