hmmm... &mdash 02/22/06 - 09:31:11 PM
...I'll have to listen to the lyrics a little closer, but some of them
seem pretty twisted...am I right? I really like the delivery here...
the old-timey feel to the track... the deep voice and the kazoo...
what a hoot! Nice bouncy pace... the storytelling... very
enjoyable...

hmmm... &mdash 02/22/06 - 09:37:57 PM
It does tell a twisted little story, and a true one. I wanted the kazoo to be a
commentator, the voices of neighbors in the building where it takes place.

Nice track guys! &mdash 02/23/06 - 04:57:56 PM
Great track guys! This reminds me a lot of "The Captain Matchbox Whoopee Band" that we used to share the bill with in Sydney in the 70s. Never been a big kazoo fan, but it fits in perfectly here - very good vox, and nice guitars. Would love to read the lyrics.
Nice one!! Neil

But I enjoyed it. Too much fun going on here, but I could take it.
Interesting composition and I'm not quite sure why I liked it so much.

Im not sure what you mean by "Pot never did that to anyone". This song was
based on my experiences when I first moved to NYC and ended up broke and
living in a welfare hotel. You had two choices, cry or laugh about it. Thanks
for the listen, support and votes my brother.

Can't remember... &mdash 02/27/06 - 06:06:47 AM
...ever hearing kazoo panned from once side to the other and back again
- fantastic. Witty, melodic and played with vim.

KK

PS - There's a bit of a kazoo sub-culture on MJ, check out some of
Caroline's stuff.
PPS - natty jacket!

Funkin' A. What a fun tune. You're hysterical. Your music are like
miniature one act plays. I love what you're doing rene--keep it up!

I just thought that your vocal style, and the somewhat comical, but technically
proficient delivery of thgis tune reminded me of Redbone.

Theatrical kazoo &mdash 04/26/06 - 05:56:06 AM
Nice wit, audio concept, theatricality, ambiguity, and pervasive whimsy.
Delightfully intriguing track and presentation. Really like the different
voices. As a production, this is my favorite of your tracks so far.

Theatrical kazoo &mdash 04/26/06 - 12:20:03 PM
thank you, denis sedov is a pro and his contributions lift the entire piece up. i was lucky that he insisted on recording this.

I envisioned the kazoo as another character in this piece while recording and mixing it. It is the voice of the neighbors, appearing stage left and stage right. Like a puppet in a punch and judy show.

Nails it on the head. We are dealing here with an opera in miniature. I
hear characters distinguished by vocal range, entrances, exits,
identification of instruments with themes/characters, etc. This is a
truly dramatic way of writing songs. (Cf. my comment on Love
Monkey.)

I am especially impressed by this approach of yours because I find
myself stuck in a lyric mode, wherein the first person is engaged in a
bland, subjective, almost completely expository mode: "I love you, let
me belabor the ways..." You get the picture.

(One puzzle for me is whether to identify vocal range and character in
this song. Are they purposely transposed? Is the baritone really
Frankie?)

There are two people singing and one person speaking a single line. Denis Sedov, who is an opera baritone sings the part of Frankie. I am singing the narration and Ronnie. Sasha Goclowski does the single line "only my daddy" of the teenage hooker. Denis was appearing at The Met when we recorded this piece. He often has a lot of hours to fill in between rehersals when he is staying in New York and to my humble delight he likes filling in on my pieces. He also plays astonishing array of instruments. He can be heard playing solo guitar on I Dont Like Mother. He also plays solo guitar on Love Monkey and programed the strings. He had heard me play this piece a few years back and lobbied for me to record it.

Hey Rene &mdash 03/24/07 - 09:06:10 PM
This is seriously interesting in a voyeur kind of way. I came here a few weeks ago but saw the "explicit" sign and my daughters were in the room, so I had to wait. Pretty cool in the two voices/narration. Would love to see the lyrics. This is going to my iPod for further study ;).
Very cool.
