Description:
After "Ellipses," I was reeling in a musical high of sorts. This was the result. Not as full, or complex as the first, and much more in line with the rules of classical tonal harmony. I'm actually working on a new version of it, to add a little syncopation to liven it up towards the end.

Not as good as Ellipses, but very nice. I'll be waiting for the final version
before I give a full comment.

a nice start &mdash 02/26/06 - 08:37:53 AM
... but I would work use some other instruments if I were you. Sounds a bit too artificial to me. Anyhow, a warm welcome at MacJams, and keep on posting!

I suppose that's a matter of aesthetics...considering that if you really apply your ear to the majority of the songs around here, they all sound "artificial." MIDI is what I have. But I'm not here to make great recordings of crappy songs, but listenable recordings of music that I've composed in order to recieve critique.

I understand the point you make, but I would suggest that most people respond
to the presentation (i.e. timbres used) almost as strongly as they do to the actual
"substance" of the composition, so it's hard to separate the two. Yes, sampled
and synthesized sounds don't ever sound quite like the real thing, but they (esp.
samplers) sure have come a long way, to the point where a good sampler in the
hands of someone who knows how to use it can fool an awful lot of people into
thinking it's the real thing. Which is pretty amazing, when you think about it.

Anyway, I hope you don't find any of these comments too discouraging, and I
hope you post some more tunes!

The opening phrase was a bit static &mdash 04/01/06 - 12:07:58 AM
but I appreciated very much when you opened up to more rhythimc
variation and tone color varieties. The beginning is a bit abrupt. The first
instrument is the least appealing of those you use in this. Does
MusicTime Deluxe use the QuickTime Synth only, or can you use other
voices, like the SmartMusic softsynth. Look into some other voicings, the
ones you used do the job for getting the music down, but as a listener,
they are somewhat distracting. GarageBand has decent tone quality, but
the basic instruments are VERY basic, and I had to get the Orchestral
instruments jampack for what I needed. Anyway, a thought for when you
have money to burn : )

Good! &mdash 05/20/06 - 03:54:27 PM
Good work! It feels a bit stiff... not sure what software you're using,
but ideally, it'd be great to put in the occasional rit., or push
the tempo a bit, just to give it a somewhat more human feel. The
timbre you use to start is okay, and once again I'm not sure what other
options you have there, but a piano sound with a little more sparkle
might help things a bit. The string pizz.s are a good idea; they add a
lot.

Consider changing registers some of the time when you repeat lines
(echo), and changing dynamics, timbres, etc. too. All these little
details add a great deal to the music.

I enjoyed it, and I encourage you to write more and submit it!
