Description:
When Drakonis posted Ember (months ago, now!), he expressed interest in me doing an interpretation of it.
I set it aside until a week ago, and -- having no preconceived notions on how to treat it vocally-- I recorded several improvised vocal tracks over the instrumental.
When I asked Drak if he had any poetry that I might include as a reading with the vocals, he emailed me several--and the one I chose was his beautiful poem "Sakura."
Thank you, Drak, for letting me add to your wonderful composition!
Lyrics:
Sakura
(The Cherry Blossom)
--------------------
A cherry tree in April bloomed
I sat beneath
My heart consumed
Reflections from a glassy pond
Caught in stillness
Showed beyond
Only I saw the blossom fall
No one else would have cared at all
Slowly, Gently
Kissed by the wind
It followed its path
To the end
When the petal touched the pool
The surface shimmered
Like a jewel
And exploded
Setting free
The silence
Reflections
And me.

beautiful poem &mdash 02/23/06 - 07:05:36 PM
a very beautiful poem. some nice imagery. i like the enchanting vocals in the back ground. during the kissed by the wind part the words seem spoken a little fast which i think takes away from the smoothness. it seems to work better in the last stanza, a beautiful piece. [ Reply to This ]
Arigatou Gozaimasu! &mdash 02/23/06 - 08:05:25 PM
Mystified, your soft wispy vocals are a gorgeous touch to this, and do
send Ember off in a Japanese-like direction, but blended with your
characteristic Myst-like sound. Your choice of this poem, and your
reading of it, surprised me by fitting in the soundbed so nicely... I would
not have thought of an Oriental feel for Ember, but your voice and reading
were delightful, and I am extremely happy with your interpretation.
Thank you for spending time on this and doing such a masterful on the
singing and production, this means a great deal to me! My kids love your
work, and really liked this as well!

Eastern flavor! &mdash 02/23/06 - 09:37:17 PM
I really like the Eastern Flavor of this piece and it seems to build evermore
beautiful as the piece progresses in two creshendos. Infused with deep
emotion and spiritual reverence, it reminds me of the old Disney of
Johnny Appleseed or parts of Songs of the South....A very graceful
blending of a beautiful, yet simple poem, that could have been written by
the Zen Master himself....Congratulations, Cat and Drak (see I'm a poet
too. ;-) ) on a job well done....This deserves far better marks than its
getting so its 10's for me. If only most New Age Music was as
beautiful!...digitalnirvana9 [ Reply to This ]

Ember-ified ..... &mdash 02/24/06 - 01:17:43 AM
I will never tire of the many interpretations of this now seemingly "timeless" piece of music ..... and Mysti's beautiful lilting vocals fill it out so nicely ..... I must download it and add it to my Ember directory ..... [ Reply to This ]
Only one question &mdash 02/24/06 - 03:53:40 AM
Drak- when are you going to release a CD with all the different variations
of Ember? It just never seems to get old!
A beautiful piece of music and some very captivating singing, Mysti... you
guys always meet or exceed my expectations. Hmmmn... sounds like a
survey answer. I mean- you ROCK... in a relaxed, new age kinda way! [ Reply to This ]

Another ember &mdash 02/24/06 - 06:26:35 AM
It's really fascinating to see how many moods have been created by the
musical additions by different people here. Drak, I hope you put these all
on a CD... "Ember Moods". :-) Mysti, very lovely reading of the poem.
Hope all is well with both of you! [ Reply to This ]
THANK YOU! &mdash 02/26/06 - 12:48:46 AM
Thanks, all, for your comments here on this piece.
Yes...it took me a while...a LONG while....but I'm glad I did get a bit of
time to return to Ember with a 'blank canvas' so to speak.
It was nice to return to listen to this composition as if I had heard it for
the first time, and then to see there it took me.
I'm glad you've enjoyed it!
Thanks again to Drak for the fabulous instrumental bed and the poem.
Basically...I just sang along.
And it was a pleasure :)
