This brings a whole new dimension... &mdash 03/05/06 - 07:04:31 PM
...to Bill's playing... more dynamics, more interest in the mix, especially
over headphones...
I love the drums. And the ambience/reverb/feel of the space is really
great. You've just got great ears, Monsieur le Vortex.
This is my idea of a really supportive collaboration.

Thank you Ed, I appreciate your comments! I'm glad you found this a supportive collaboration; my challenge was to enhance Bill's playing, which is already so good and fills the sonic spaces so nicely... I tried to add to his music without being a distraction, which wasn't easy, but I'm happy with these results. Thanks for listening!

A very nice melody. I found the drums to be a bit overpowering, not in
volume but in style I think. Love the slide guitar. Maybe the drums could
sound a little more like a small room recording (less reverb?). Overall, I
enjoyed listening. [ Reply to This ]
nice &mdash 03/07/06 - 12:34:37 PM
Yes, I know what you mean about the drums; I originally experimented with more subdued percussion. But I actually like the stronger drums propelling the song, and the way it adds a new dimension to Bill's lovely guitar. Thanks for the honest feedback, I appreciate hearing what works or doesn't work from people.

Cool... Nice to hear Bill playing in a band. Usually it's just him. He does well with a drummer. Oh yeah... and nice job David. A little haunting of a Led Zep 3. Maybe some bass would be nice.

Cool &mdash 03/08/06 - 01:40:48 PM
Adding the bass was indeed challenging; I didn't want anything to overpower the guitars, but I wanted the bass loud enough to hear it in my crappy headphones... so there was a bit of a compromise there, and it's a little low in the mix. I figured that was ok, because Bill's playing is the star of this show. Glad you like the mix, John, thanks!

Wonderful combination of talents &mdash 03/07/06 - 09:11:24 PM
The whole is greater than the sum of the parts, and when you have Tiler
on guitar, that's really saying something! The drums are great. maybe a
little 'big' for the piece, but on the other hand, it's SPRING! I liked the
birds. How'd you get them to sing along like that on cue ; ) [ Reply to This ]
Wonderful combination of talents &mdash 03/08/06 - 01:58:31 PM
Hey thanks for listening, kristyjo! I'm glad you liked this. As for the birds, they were willing to sing for me once I removed the cats from the vicinity... but only after I promised them a years supply of worms and nest-building twigs.

playful &mdash 03/08/06 - 11:09:49 AM
I love the birds at the end! You threw alot of stuff into that mix which really adds to the interest. You kind of sayto yourself, what's coming next? Can I ask how the drums were done? and the peddle steel? which seems a little harsh at times.
Otherwise, it's a great skipping song! [ Reply to This ]
playful &mdash 03/08/06 - 02:10:18 PM
I assembled the drums from "Drums on Demand" loops, which I use for most of my tunes. Yep, they're great samples! And the Bass lines are from "Bass on Demand". The actual *music* is thetiler's guitar playing :) Bill gave me the GarageBand file of his guitar playing, and I exported the guitar parts individually so that I could do the final mix in Soundtrack--if the steel guitar sounds harsh it might be because I exported it a bit hot from GB, maybe introducing a little distortion. I'm glad you like all the stuff that I put into the mix; I tried to only include things that would enhance Bill's playing (and I really thought the birds fit, in that respect). Thanks for listening, bethrobin, glad you like this, and I appreciate your thoughts!

Chopped Tiler... &mdash 11/21/06 - 04:01:02 PM
I have mixed feelings about this, pun intended... I too am a nut for Bill's guitar work, it flows so nicely. I am also a nut for your drumming/mixing/aesthetic sense in music. However, the chopping/mixing of snippets of Bill's guitar music causes it to lose some of its character and charm, instead sounding more like a montage than a cohesive thought from beginning to end. I'm afraid I must say that this doesn't feel as skillfully thought out and put together as I have come to expect from you recently (yes, I'm commenting on an older piece :-) The drums are great, as is the bass, and all the pieces line up well with Bill's recorded guitar bits... but the overall impression of the piece is not as amazing as much of the other things I've heard you do, it lacks a cohesive build/theme I think. Sorry, have to be honestly critical here. Of course you've set a rather high bar for yourself on so many other things I've heard from you :-)

I hear what your saying; I'm not so sure I improved on or enhanced Bill's playing... which you have to admit is a tough challenge! ...but I gave it a shot, and I'm moderately happy with what I came up with here, mostly for the juxtaposition of the weirdness with Bill's awesome and very grounded playing. Thanks for giving this a listen and for your honest comments, I really appreciate that! [ Reply to This ]
