Description
You know when you get part of a tune or melody that just jumps into your head and refuses to go until you've put it in something? This entire song (lyrics included) was written and performed within about half an hour. lol! I've tried to include a slightly creepy feeling - it is, after all, a dead person singing to you....

I need to get a better photo of me fencing. Oh well, it's the most recent one.

Lyrics
Well I'm standing with my sword and shield,
My banners are raised,
I'm counting down the hours till
I reach my end of days,

Cos I was born to the rapier,
I was born to the fight,
And if this should be my end of days,
Then Gods I pray this night
That my body will be born again
Onto the tourney field,
And that I can stand again
With my sword and shield,

Well I'm standing with my sword and shield,
My banners are raised,
I'm counting down the minutes till
I reach my end of days,

Cos I was born to the rapier,
I was born to the fight,
And I will fight through dusk and dawn
And by the candle light.
Oh friend and foe around me
Both falter and fall,
Till I am left standing alone
Against the shield-wall.

Well I'm standing with my sword and shield,
My banners are raised,
I'm counting down the seconds till
I reach my end of days.

Cos I was born to the rapier,
I was born to the fight,
And now my end of days has come,
Oh Gods I pray this night
That my body be born again,
Onto the tourney field,
And that I can stand again,
With my sword and shield,

For I was born to the rapier,
I was born to the fight,
And with my final breath I pray,
"Make my spirit a knight"
For I was born to the rapier,
I was born to the fight,
And I have died by the rapier,
I have died in the fight.

Nice writing...
and singing (didn't want to leave that out). I love when songs almost
write themselves. Not exactly my cup of tea, but very well done
nonetheless.

hey... i think i saw something you said in a forum post the other day
about thinking your melodies were too simple. (i think it was you!)

yes - this is simple. but it's good, too. so who cares? it's got a nice
haunting quality. you manage to capture something that is beyond
simple vs. complex.

so don't worry - keep doing it! it's great!

This is powerful inspiration
All in a half hour? Awesome. So you think you are channeling a dead
swordsman? I may have to try my hand at singing this song. It is
compelling. I am smitten.

Music from another era...
Takes me to another time and place--sounds like it could be ancient. You've definitely got that pretty, slightly creepy, haunting middle ages thing figured out!

Uncanny
This is so fine that I performed a little experiment. I imported it into GarBand in two separate tracks, the second starting about half way through the first track. After moving the second track around until the phrases matched those of the first, I could hear that you, though singing unaccompanied, had not strayed from the original pitch at all.

It's a remarkable feat and it leads me to suspect that you are blessed with perfect pitch. That's true, isn't it?

Wow, thanks! That's an improvement from the young girl who could never really keep in tune in the School Choir....lol!

Something else
It's not only the lyrics, so insightful in their storytelling. It's not only
your voice, sounding like the past, present and future all at once. It's
not only that you had the strength and the courage to do it a cappella,
and make it work beautifully. It's all of those factors, culminating in not
just a haunting, moving ballad, but a transcendental experience.

All of the above qualities guarantee your song a spot in my top 5 songs
I've heard at MacJams.com. I would humbly ask to give it a go myself,
but I'd be afraid to disturb the space, beyond time or reproach, in
which it resides.

Thank you for gracing the MacJams community with your pure,
inspirational voice and powerful songwriting -- I can't wait to hear
more!

I listened to Richard's version first
Then he referenced your original version. I love the haunting tones here. this is really well done. You should do an instrumental with your voice as well.
Very good,
Stephen
