Description
this song was hard for me. it's actually old... from november or so. but i only recently did a decent recording.

the song is about... well, itself.

i guess i could go on forever, so i'll just let it speak for itself.

Lyrics
this is not a song
about you
it is something else
that i've got to do
tried to write that one
but it was nothing new

this one's for myself
me and no one else

now i don't mean
to fuss
maybe it's a song
about us
but even that
i don't really trust

this one's for myself
me and no one else

i can't give you
what you really need
but you're in all i sing
that you cannot see
so this is a song
about you
and me

this one's for myself
you, and no one else

the guitar sounds great and so does your voice and the lyrics are pure and simple - i hope you will still be singing it at the end of the year - thank you for sharing xox

Really different
There is a purity to the song that is refreshing. It's so honest - in its lyrics and in the singing performance. Almost naked.

What was "hard" about the song, Darren? The writing, the recording?

Nice job.

Really different
thanks charlie!

i guess what was hard about it was writing the lyrics. the sentiment behind the
song itself. it's for someone for whom i've always wanted to write a song, but
never could. so the song ended up being about not being able to write them a
song.

definitely the most personal thing i've shared on here. the person i wrote it for
hasn't even heard it.

Very nice!
This has a real live performance feel...did you record everything in one
live take? Feel like I am listening to an intimate performance in a NY
club....great powerful vocals.Lovely!

Very nice!
yup... one take. that's my new thing. i realized it's what i do best, so i should
stick with it. at least unless someone's helping me on the engineering end...
which will be happening soon (look out EP, here i come!)

no NY club here (yet), but you may here this at a Detroit club next month. next
stop, NY. :)

thanks steve! always appreciate your comments!

Did you record this all at once? We're new here, Edna and I(Eileen) so I hope to hear all your stuff. Sounds great, full of emotion and momentum.

Wow, your a talented young fellow
hey thank nips!

yeah - all at once. i have a hard time splitting up playing and singing... a little
backwards i guess.

feel free to go through my other stuff.

look forward to your first post, too!

thoughts from the bull...
okay, please forgive my honesty and accept the compliments. here you
are:

first, i like your voice a lot. you've got a good, unique sound. it's both
enjoyable to listen to and potentially the kind of voice one can sing
along with.

second, song structure and melody and such - musically, i like what i
hear a lot. production-wise, the whole thing sounds like a demo.
there's not a lot of attention to small details, clarity, or the flawed bits.
this isn't a bad thing, it's just noticable. some of my favorite artists,
like Syd Barrett, were able to pull off an entire post-career with songs
like this. so, my observation is simply that while musically i like what i
hear (a lot, too!), it is not of a high caliber production sense. it's of a
demo or live recording sense. neither good nor bad, for me.

lastly, the entire song as a piece. for me, this song sounds extremely
unchallenged. it's as though it wasn't planned out very much and
lyrically it's a bit underwhelming.

i like the middle bit "i don't mean to fuss/maybe it's a song about us/
but even that i don't really trust," but even in that, it just sounds very
underdeveloped.

this is a song with great potential, both in the physical sense of the
recording quality and production, and in the transcendental sense of
power and effectiveness; spirituality. it could be deep. it could get right
into something. but again, for me, right now it isn't going there.

you asked for folks to come and listen to your song, so i did. and these
are my thoughts. i like the piece and think it could go farther. i'm only
offering you the challenge to take it there.

thank you for sharing your music! i look forward to hearing more!

peace

thoughts from the bull...
hi boris!

don't ask for forgiveness for your honesty - that's what i'm looking for.

thanks for your comments about my voice and sound. :)

yeah, the whole thing was a one track recording. that's what i've been doing
lately. definitely a demo!

but you are RIGHT! this song is underdeveloped. this is what i meant when i
said it was hard for me. i normally don't have this hard of a time writing
lyrics (you can check out my other songs for some examples). something
about this song just didn't come to me. which is why the song ended up
being about not being able to write a song. but still not enough.

i guess i'm glad to hear that you think it has potential lyrically - that's
something i even doubt about this one, which is why it sat around for so
long. i personally hate the second verse (i don't mean to fuss). it sounds
totally thrown together for me.

but i thought i'd get over my need to have something perfect before i share it
and get feedback to see how i could develop it.

i had given up on this one, but maybe sometime soon i'll revisit the lyrics and
try and get it up to par.

thanks again for your honesty! i do appreciate it.

thoughts from the bull...
cool darren! i am glad you're open minded.

i most certainly hope you revisit this one. imagine if someone came along and
posted a song which had only one or two lines of lyrical content. a line that
that repeated over and over, and the other just stuck on the end.

most people would call it ridiculous, or unfinished, or not even a song.

but when someone like The Beatles recorded "Why Don't We Do It In
the Road," critics called it outrageous, brilliant, and clever.

i think as long as the lyrics are potent enough to drive an interest, without
going the route of cliche, then the song has potential. in your case, the music
is already there; the concept is already there; it's just a mirror that needs
adjusting to see the entire reflection.

i think.

i've said enough. i'll stop blathering! peace out and again, thanks for your
music!

I like this song, i almost forgot about. I suppose that is the disadvantage about prelistening, But now i am here! I like the lyrics of this one. This is not a song! Well this is a song, and its fine song. I like your playing here, those small breaks in your playing is genious! Good work darren, but i am looking forward to a more fine produced tune!

i'm not good at talking about myself! i will say that you may be in for some varying qualities of recording. some bad, some not so bad. i'm getting better at the 'engineering' side of things, so it should be continuously improving. also - if ... [see more]
