Ember-Poem (Caroline's Reading)

Get Flash to see this player.

Description
Ember started as my thought of "The hope that burns within us all, that spurs struggle toward eventual triumph, despite terrible adversity". I first created a piece of music to convey this, and opened it up for others to interpret in their own ways (without giving any hints as to my thoughts about its meaming.) Later, I worked on a poem that was to further describe the seed of the idea. I slightly extended the middle section of the music, and then this poem fit perfectly in place... but I still didn't feel comfortable reading my own poetry. I showed Caroline the poem and she was apparently quite taken by it, and asked if she could read it for me. I am extremely pleased with her rendition of it, and hope you enjoy what we have crafted as the next in this continual phoenix-like rebirth of new Embers.

The original Ember can be found here: http://www.macjams.com/song/13185

Lyrics
In the stillness
Of the dark
The world holds its breath
Then lets fly a spark

As the flame warms,
And it grows
The ember of hope is fed
Living energy flows

Reckless, Breathless,
To the ledge
Racing, Flying
Over the edge!
Flying... Falling...

Now cold, broken,
Empty, lost
Rekindling the ember
Is not worth the cost

Despair cries out,
No reply
Pain, numbness, apathy
Darken the eye

Cold black tendrils
Cool the fire
There is no need to fight
The final rest is what's desired

Long dead stones
Once tightly sealed
But now, shining through forgotten cracks
Dormant power is suddenly revealed

Confidence builds,
Strength returns
The flame renewed
Now brightly burns

When all is lost,
And you can't cope
Save one last breath
For the ember of hope

Where's everyone
This is my first listen to Carolines voice, and she's perfect for the part.
Absolutely perfect! Now where was I for the original submission -
Likely hanging out on the more sketchy side of MJs...

Drak, it seems that almost everytime I listen to one of my favs here,
that it almost always is something that resonates w/ me, and more so
than I could have imagined. Maybe this is 'poetic justice'... Certainly,
the spirit is captured here and my hopes are, that it is one that
everyone will be able to relate to at some eventual point in life...

Nice work Sir. And I'm very happy to know ya. Dion

Where's everyone
Dion, thank you for listening, and continuing to open your great heart here. I
sincerely appreciate knowing that this spoke to you... and you and I both agree
that Caroline did very well bringing my poem to life here.

Of course, I am still patiently waiting for you to offer to put your magic Cydinko
touch and spin on Ember someday... I've always enjoyed your amazing talent
and bet you could turn it into a feast for the ears. But that's another story for
another day.

Nice
Love spoken word. So you have my bias off the bat. Love brit voices. They
do drama and snarky better than any other.

Love the echo isolated on "falling."

I'll have to fire this up on my big speakers.

wow...
Hey there co-conspiratorial WoodSpy! FYI, the encrypted e-mail about the
secret Ember society was sent to you last night, it should be waiting for you
now... go check your fireplace.

I am glad you liked Caroline's version, and as soon as I get a moment here I'll
upload your version here to Macjams, I think everyone will be quite amazed at
your retro-fit of "oriental latin surf guitar Ember" :-) The wide variety of
interpretations & styles that have sprung from the Embers has been amazing,
and just shows off the great talent around me. I'm having a blast sharing
this!

As far as a CD, that is quite possible soon, we'll see... I will try to
"Re:(M)Ember" to look into it. Watch the coals in your fireplace for more
details.

Caroline really fits quite nicely. Like that falling fading - cool.

Again terrific vocal wording.

Great backround setting as well.

Oh Man!
The moodiness and mysterousness of "Ember" in almost all its
incarnations has always just amazed me. But, now, we see the thoughts
behind the music. Very revealing. Gives it a nice twist. Great words
Eduard. And Carolines voice almost smolders, as if it could burst into
flames at any moment. This is awesome. And it's coming home to live in
my iPod.

Hearing Caroline being so serious
helps to really personalize the depth of this piece.

Its eerie as hell and a damn sight near ambient goth. Hints of early
Dead Can Dance in there as well.

The slow descent into the eldritchian pits of despair being redeemed
through a breath of hope at the end is classic and the imagery is near
primitive but the telling is superb, wise and altogether captivating.

Well done the both of you! Brava!

Hearing Caroline being so serious
Caroline did indeed breathe life into my poem, and it all "seams" to fit together
nicely here, and apparently, given your comment, gets the point across... which
is exactly what I was hoping to do! I really appreciate you stopping by and
immersing yourself in the primitive cenotes (bad pun) of Ember here... and I do
hope you will get out a didgeridu and take this for your own spin "Down Ember".
I think you could probably make it quite eerie and captivating.

My first time hearing Caroline's voice.
Her voice is perfect for Ember, and it's beautiful overall. I need to listen to more of her music. This reminds me I need to get to work on my version of Ember - eventually. This song is going to have a way different feel when I add my 7-string's low A.

joys of Macjams
One of the joys of Macjams is going off on tangents, finding one person's music, then connecting to another's... have fun wandering all the twisty passages, they are NOT all alike. Glad you like the poem and her great reading of it, and I do look forward to your take on this... take your time and create something great from the embers.

Nicely Done
Everything works well together. I heard Cornel West use the phrase: "blues-infected hope". This is a synthesis of idea, dialog and music. You can imagine scent and touch, as this is so very evocative. So much talent!! Thank you.

Nice to see you again
Wow, thank you for sharing your enjoyment of this... quite a compliment from an accomplished poetess. I love Caroline's voice(s) and specifically her reading of this, she is marvellous... she could probably teach people how to speak with conviction in theater... oh wait, that's what she DOES! :-) Thank you for letting me know you liked this. The struggle of life, and the constant tug of hope, tends to be a big theme in my life and music. It took me many months to craft the thoughts into a poem, though!
