Description:
Written and recorded in 1987 this is not a GB piece. I dug this out of my old cassette library of my work. I tried re-rendering in GB and I couldn't get the sound right, so I decided to post this bit of the past instead. It's really more classical but I thought too many might find it more jarring there. This is a nod to 12 tone music, but w/ a few rules bent here and there. ArtsForge artwork: Helix 2 by Shawn Sapp, a Bryce image.

Interesting &mdash 05/31/04 - 07:34:28 PM
that FM synthesis still sounds distinctive today. What is an
FB01? Some kind of sequencer? Can't remember if the
Yam had one built in. I was playing in a Tangerine Dream
type band (two keyboards bass and drums) with a guy
who had one at about this time and this really takes me
back. How did you get it onto here from tape? There is
one recording I'd love to post on here that's gathering
dust in my cassette drawyer at the moment.
Nostalgically cool. Liked it. [ Reply to This ]

Yup, gotta love classic FM. The FB01 was a 1/2 rack 4op FM sound module.
Made to be more affordable. I still own its slightly beefier full rack brother the
TX-81Z. No Seq's on any of the Yamaha KB's of that era that I know of
(though I also still own a QX-21 - my first sequencer).
I hooked my cassette deck through my mixer into my USB audio int. (iMic).
Fired up Audacity and recorded. I then trimmed the ends and did a quick
normalize, saved as AIFF opened in iTunes and then converted to mp3.
Glad I could help you reminisce.

being dense) thanks, I'll paste that into the description now.

This has a fun feel to it. As Ringo says, FM generates distinctive sounds, and it's great to hear them again. For a while, there was FM overkill and a lot of people got tired of the sound, but I think that's not the case any more, and now it sounds "classic."
An interesting thing to try would be to do another version of this piece where the registers become increasingly spread apart as the piece unfolds. i.e., after a while, a single note in the row shows up in a different register, then, after another while, another note is moved to a different register, etc., until you have all 12 pitches in widely different registers... Just an idea.
Good stuff; I enjoyed it! [ Reply to This ]
