Holy Holy Holy (kids sing)

Description
Last Sunday (March 12), two of the Children's Choirs that I direct sang at the 9:30 and 11:00 services. Earlier that morning (8:00), I had a volunteer group of about 8 kids sing. Because we were singing three services (four, including Saturday night), I didn't want to overwork the full choir, so I had volunteers sing at 8:00, and the full choir at 9:30 and 11:00.

This is one file that has two performances on it. The first three minutes or so, you hear the volunteer group of 8 kids, ages 8 to 11. They are singing my arrangement of the old hymn, "Holy, Holy, Holy." The accompaniment you hear is a recording I made of myself playing, using GarageBand and Synthogy Ivory.

The final third of the song has singing in harmony. The kids sound pretty good on the harmony part, so stick around to hear the whole thing.

The second half of this track is the same song, but sung by 30 kids, ages 5 to 11. This was at the 11:00 service. You can tell the ambience is quite different for this recording. Younger voices, and the room is not nearly as warm. The 8:00 recording was done in our chapel, and the 11:00 recording was done in our larger Worship Center. I much prefer the Chapel's acoustics (that's the first recording you hear).

Kids, you all did a wonderful job. I especially want to thank my volunteer singers who sang at four services that weekend. You are all a blessing to me, and I am privileged to be your director.

Hope all you MacJammers enjoy these performances.

I captured the audio with my portable MiniDisk recorder.

too soft
this song is meant to dominate, I have heard this sort of thing done to
good strong hymns before. don't trivialize God's strength. Children
understand this strength and use it well. Pardon my old school attitude.
This is the first chance I have had to speak out against what is happening
in our churches. Obviously the pianist has good talent and the children's
voices are wonderful.

GW, thanks for your comment, and your kind words about the kids' voices
and the pianist. You're certainly entitled to your view of how this hymn
should be sung. And there's certainly more than one valid way to perform it.
And I am pleased that there is a MacJammer out there who has strong
convictions about the way church music should be performed. I'm sure that if
we were to meet, we would find that we have a lot in common.

However, I have a few thoughts to share with you. Consider the fact that
these kids are singing an historic hymn, one which most children today (even
the ones who go to church) have never heard, much less sung. I am trying to
do my part to keep this and other wonderful timeless hymns alive for future
generations. So much of children's church choir music today is pop or rock
oriented. (And I myself have done songs like that with my church choir kids,
just not exclusively.) I think it is vitally important that they sing a variety of
literature, which would include becoming familiar with the hymnbook, even in
a limited way.

So while I appreciate the fact that your preference would be to hear this hymn
sung in a more powerful fashion, I hope that you rejoice with me that this
hymn is being performed at all, especially by children. As well, children's
voices are especially suited for delivering music in a quiet and thoughtful
way. I recall when the Lord spoke to Moses from the burning bush, He spoke
in a "still, small voice." and I doubt that Moses would have said that the
Lord's voice was too soft. I'm sure it was just right for that moment.

Thanks for listening, GW.

Marvelous
John, you do a good job with these kids. They handled the key change
very well. They seemed a little hesitant with the harmonies, but generally
carried it off well. After all, they are kids. :-) Someday they will make a
mighty choir for the Lord.

God bless you,

Rick

Marvelous
Thanks, Rick. Yes, they were a bit hesitant on the two-part section, but
you've got to let them try things like that, or else it's never going to happen.
Thanks for your kind words, and for stopping by to listen.
