Description:
a sad little song.
special guest appearance by my neighbors ill-timed footsteps at the end.
p.s. please don't mind the occasional vocal flub. i wasn't up for as much rehearsal as i usually do before i record. :\
Lyrics:
oh my dear
you know i'm not here
stop pretending
it's not ending
i'm somewhere near to gone
i'm somewhere near to gone
you can't see me
i'm lost in your reality
hiding within
a sleepwalking grin
i'm somewhere near to gone
i'm somewhere near to gone
have no fear, i'm gone
i'm not here
i'm not here

Sad little song indeed &mdash 03/20/06 - 09:19:16 PM
Oh, the resignation in your voice. It's like your are moaning in song. The "lost" in "I'm lost in your reality", the way you let it float, I could hear the ectasy in that agony.
Quite heartbreaking. Loved it. [ Reply to This ]

Jeez, this song is sad!
Really nice work. I like the plaintive quality of your voice, and the guitar playing is top notch.
"I'm somewhere near to gone" is a nice line, and the melody used with it is beautiful.

suits this rainy day &mdash 03/20/06 - 11:13:28 PM
here in brisvegas we are suffering a torrential downfall as part of the meteorlogical aftermath of cyclone larry. and this track is one of those atmospheric numbers that add to an already laid back vibe........i like the melody and the way its sung.......
although i have to admit that the whole thing is a blatant rip off of the theme from the golden girls............LOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! [ Reply to This ]

urbnite's moving castle &mdash 03/20/06 - 11:13:47 PM
Reminds me of the late and great Jeff Buckley. I can imagine a string
orchestra somewhere in there. Another reference is Nick Drake. Cheered
up my morning (true). [ Reply to This ]

Kind of Blue &mdash 03/21/06 - 12:22:31 AM
Lovely track..I like the sparse live performance feel...you let your voice go
on this one nicely...using it almost like a jazz instrument improvising
around the melody. 'Hiding within a sleepwalking grin' is a really cool
lyric! Nice

Kind of Blue &mdash 03/21/06 - 11:45:17 PM
stevel... thank you so much.
i do listen to a lot of jazz, actually. i was thinking the day i posted that, how i
realized jazz doesn't really influence my music. maybe it does.
a lot of times when i'm playing with melodies later in song, i go back and
make sure i have a solid way to do it the first time... i think of duke ellington
saying in the recordings of the newport jazz festival something like, "jimmy
garrison states the theme," at the beginning of festival junction. it's the
jumping off point for the rest of the song. just something that stuck with me.
now i'm rambling.
when i really just mean to say thank you. [ Reply to This ]

I keep coming back to your voice.
You have such a delightfully unique voice that it's always a pleasure to
listen to your songs. And you can really use it, too! And when teamed up
with your nice guitarplaying - well, you get songs like these!

Darren,
You're developing a really interesting style - love the guitar sound, and
your voice is very unique (people say that about mine, and I take it -
and mean it - as a compliment). Excellent (but limited) lyrics - really
interseting ending. Getting better and better each song Darren - keep
em coming!

Plaintive lyrics, melancholy melody, emotional vocals, and strumming
your pain. This song is very striking, made especially so by the vocals.
You have a great voice and terrific range and you're not afraid to show
your emotion as you sing. Fantastic! [ Reply to This ]

cool..but more words in the lyric sheet i hope &mdash 03/23/06 - 03:40:12 PM
Cool guitar playing, Darren... The song is kinda folksy and has a plaintive
tone..like a sad longing song. I like the melody, although it gets a little
repetitive. The lyrics are simple, but if felt short and incomplete. It
would be good to lenthen the lyrics so it wont be too repetitive and so
there is deeper connection to the music... Still, it's a very artistic song.
Thanks for sharing, Darren.

cool..but more words in the lyric sheet i hope &mdash 03/23/06 - 09:29:39 PM
hi leon! thanks for the kinds words!
also, i want to thank you for your honestly and actually constructive criticism!
yeah, the lyrics are simple. i was actually trying to push myself to
communicate what the song was about in a few words as possible. sort of an
exercise in simplicity for me.
and i do agree that it's not complete as a story (usually i like to tell a whole
story). but this story is not done yet, so there's no way to finish it. maybe
the end will be in another song... but for me this song said everything it
needed to.
and now i'm rambling. don't mean to reject your critique, either!
thanks again!

your voice is lovely and the guitar sounds great and almost 'sitar-y' in places. and the lyrics work for me too
apart from that.... i didn't think much of it at all!!! lol

maybe next time you don't get to hear first! actually, i know that - we already
decided!
thanks lovely.

great acoustictone and the barren sound really lends itself well to the song....sad and inspired but good from start to finish....I like the open sound to the voice as well....and thats a very steady falsetto....big kudos!!!! [ Reply to This ]

Uniquely Poetic &mdash 03/24/06 - 09:30:21 AM
The Vocal (Fine Instrument, there) is as haunting as the Longing that
haunts the narrator. Extraordinary presentation.
The single mic does a good job and provides precise detail, but seems
to bias toward the highs and transients of the guitar. If I could change
just one thing, I would mic the guitar separately for a separate EQ from
the Vocal.
A Really Fine piece, in my opinion. Fresh vision and execution.
Compliments and regards,
Cooper [ Reply to This ]
Great song &mdash 03/26/06 - 08:30:54 AM
Very cool tune. You have a lots of production warmth in this track.
Guitar and voice play off each other so well. You have an early Niel
Young, but a sweeter tone. I like the guitar playing very tasty and
relaxed. Voice, very in control.
Sometimes I think your long vocal phrasing and vibrato (tasty) gets
over played. But no sooner than I type that ,the:
'I'm somewhere near to gone' part plays, whoa...that's perfecto!!!!
I think you could mix it up sometime and sing more words,
synchopated delivery, in spots. So when the
'I'm somewhere near to gone' part plays it contrasts and is more
special sounding.
Very very cool, very pretty very nice. Lots of cool stuff going on Mister. [ Reply to This ]
neil youngish &mdash 04/13/06 - 02:23:00 PM
This one caught my attention because of the oh so Neil Youngish guitar. I really like the lazy mood this song puts me in.

The combination of ... &mdash 05/22/06 - 03:54:52 PM
Lo-Fi and your vocals gives me a sense of Belle and Sebastian ..

Very good emotional song all the same, nicely done.
..and PS. thanks for the help with getting iChat working - I lost my DSL
connection abruptly .. happens from time to time .. and I wasn't sure
of quickest way to get up and running again - it didn't work after the
connection came back .. (probably changed IP) so I unlike MJ chat ..I
had to restart ichat .. and you were gone .. I told Caroline. [ Reply to This ]
Beautiful &mdash 05/31/06 - 08:01:12 PM
Beautiful song. And the performance got that special "live" feeling. I don't
know how you recorded this, but i really feel you recorded it single-shot,
guitar and vocals at the same time. And i like it that way because remains
pure. If I'm wrong... you fooled me well, but i enjoyed being fooled. [ Reply to This ]

Has a Neil Young feel to it.
Fleshed out a bit --- lyrically and instrumentally --- this could be a a
very nice piece of work. It's pretty nice in its raw form, as it is. ;-)
Keep up the good work, Darren.

My fave so far &mdash 07/20/06 - 02:55:30 PM
Glad I came across this one. Ya know, I would ever have checked this out if I were just searching by genre. It's very nice and melodic, with a great vocal line. I wouldn't want to change it myself, but I can't help but wonder how this would sound with a touch of radiohead-esque electronics... [ Reply to This ]
