Description:
This song was written by improvising on the piano in a church at night. Only the lights above the piano are on; the rest of the church is dark. The large, vacant room creates a smooth natural reverb. It's an inspiring atmosphere to create music.

pretty &mdash 06/01/04 - 06:48:14 AM
I like the way the chords progress, and some of their
forms (sustains, add 9s or whatever they are... it's late :).

Thanks for that.

Excellent piano &mdash 06/01/04 - 12:15:41 PM
Sweet and pretty. Simple and heartfelt. I love the playing
without a metronome, the open feel. Inspired.

it reminds me of "can you sing with all the voices of the
mountain, can you paint with all the colours of the
wiiiiind.." just the progression.
very nicely done, though. pretty and effectively simple. i
like how it's not all bap bap bap bap it's baaaap baap....
bap baaaaap.. without the bap. it's gentle. mmm...

i really need to play piano again. thank you for the
inspiration!

Hey there: I enjoyed this piece. Very contemplative but
also expansive, like someone reaching for the sky. Fresh
and expressive. Nice work.

Quietly, the realization returns.

Applause &mdash 12/16/04 - 04:12:12 PM
I love the freedom of expression in this. The waves of
emotion that illuminate like shafts of colored light
through the clerestory. Magnificent.

Thank you very much for your very generous, descriptive, even poetic, words,
Richard. It is very gratifying to know this song affected you. I appreciate your
listening and commenting, the song having been posted so long ago.

I'm moved and inspired by what you wrote here.

Thank you.

Peace, be still.... &mdash 12/28/04 - 01:49:15 AM
From the first notes of this piece, I hear a sort of
'conversation....'
A child's plaintive, repeated appeals, very gently and
lovingly answered and reaffirmed until, at last, all is
resolved to assurance and peace.
The notes are pure poetry--without a single word uttered.
Remarkable.

thank you :)

I wish I were able to tell you how much the words you left here affected me.
That this song was able to evoke the images you mentioned, that you used
the word "poetry" to describe an instrumental piece... This means so much to
me.

Thank you so very much for listening and giving me the wonderful gift of
your comments. I am very grateful.

play piano in an empty church... maybe it just personal for me but you
captured that solitude and intimacy

goodnight

Very Moving &mdash 04/20/06 - 01:45:33 PM
A rather melancholy piece, masterfully played. I'd forgotten how
moving a solo piano can be, but this track brought that right back into
focus for me. I'm just beginning to explore (and, tentatively, share)
here at MJ, so I haven't heard a lot yet, but I doubt I'd hear much better
than this. This is the 3rd piece I've heard of yours and, so far, my
favorite. Thanks very much for sharing it.

Amazing. &mdash 06/12/06 - 02:27:39 PM
I would love to be able to create music like that on the piano. It is
absolutely stunning. And, although it's only one instrument, nothing is
missing. Not one thing. Thanks for sharing.

Amazing. &mdash 06/30/06 - 10:11:50 AM
Stacey, this is very gratifying to read. I consider a solo piano piece like this more
intimate than my more fully orchestrated pieces, so when someone connects
with this song it is rewarding on a deep level. Thank you so much for listening
with your heart and leaving this generous comment.

How could I have been on this website as long as I have and not heard your music until now? Composed from a humble spirit, this song is quite touching . . . on many, many levels. Thank you for the gift of your music and for, no doubt unbeknowningly, inspiring me to want to make music like this. Thank you.

This song posted quite a while back - I'm glad you found it.

Having access to a beautiful instrument in a church late at night has brought me many, many wonderful moments over the years. This was the first song I wrote on it when a generous parishioner bought it for the church. I'm pleased you enjoyed listening. Thank you for your comment.

Thank you, Lena. It's so great that you get to go to a church from the 1600's. My church is only 50 years old. The piano there is a five year-old Yamaha C-6, a 6'11" grand, which I love playing very much.

I appreciate your commenting here as a birthday present for me. What a gracious thing to do...

[ Reply to This ]
Much appreciated &mdash 04/08/08 - 12:18:42 AM
It would take a keyboard player of your sophistication to notice voicings, John. I'm sure you are an excellent improviser, and I'd love to hear some from you.

Here I used Ivory by Synthogy and Classik Studio Reverb by IK Multimedia, and that's all. I cannot take credit for the rich sound. All I did was play it.

Thanks so much for digging up this old song, John. It's always a treat to hear from you, for whom I have such great respect.
