well, &mdash 06/01/04 - 11:13:52 PM
being a classically trained pianist..
it is a nice melody. i like it when the strings come in. very
heart warming.
however i think you could expand what goes on with the
right hand, the melody. add some notes in. there is
PLENTY of room for that! otherwise, great track. it would
be even stronger if you can stick in some extra notes but
retain the wonderful melody you have! nice job. :) [ Reply to This ]
Good advice! &mdash 06/02/04 - 03:30:11 AM
After penguinsocks' recommendation I added a little
flourish to the right hand. Better?
I suppose what I should do is practice the track so I
can play it freehand, not using the metronome. [ Reply to This ]
Very Well Done... &mdash 06/02/04 - 07:22:54 AM
Nice additions from the first version (listened last night). The chords you play are refreshing! Strings are added bonus. Nothing wrong with playing with a metronome.

better for the most part &mdash 06/02/04 - 08:40:31 PM
some of the quick 8th notes in the beginning make me
cringe
you seem to have touch-sensitive keys so take advantage
of that and give us more dynamics! (or use velocity in GB)
you can still depart from the metronomical beat.
it is better though. still room for more melody, though,
keep at it! you'll improve with more practise.
i actually HATED using a metronome and never played
with one. i never write with one, either. anyone wanna buy
a metronome? lol j/k [ Reply to This ]

I do have touch-sensitive keys, but they're very sensitive, hard to
feel the impact of the note like on a traditional piano.
Not sure what you mean by the 8th notes? I'm pretty much a novice
when it comes to music jargon.
I agree completely that it's a song requiring practice of the track. I'm
not the best piano player and only recently got my fingers back on keys
since 1990... yikes!
You wouldn't happen to be interested in taking a stab at working
with me on the song, would ya? [ Reply to This ]
better for the most part &mdash 06/03/04 - 01:40:10 AM
yeah.. well it's fixable in GB! ;)
well they could be 16ths but i mean the quick ones leading up to the main
melody note in the beginning.
14 years? yikes! you're doing well for that span of time, though. you
integrated left and right well.
i am interested, actually. did you write it down? if not i could map it out by
ear. i have a grand piano and a really old keyboard (14 years old, actually, lol
- see the "ancient keyboard" post), the latter of which i can plug into my
comp. ahh the marriage of old and new technology.
anyway yeah.. i'm sure i could do somethin good with it.

oh by the way
speaking of touch sensitivity..
my piano is pretty good. i'm used to it. my grandmother's was always sticky
so when she came over she pounded SO HARD on ours, lol.
my piano teacher's mom has two grand pianos and one is very sensitive, and
the other is quite the opposite i think. it was hard adjusting.. sometimes i
can't play on a piano that looks different if i'm going by memory because i go
by sight and feel. [ Reply to This ]
Suggestions from another beginner... &mdash 06/08/04 - 12:17:52 AM
Hello...
You've got a beautiful, simple melody and excellent chord progressions! I've
played around with keyboards for many years but am not a trained pianist.
However, this doesn't stop me from tweaking stuff....anyway, I'm working on
some piano tracks now myself, and am finding that varying the VELOCITY of
each note makes a big difference. It sounds like every note in your piece is
set to the highest velocity, 127. Is this correct? If so, I would recommend
"shaping" the phrases with less velocity on the notes IN-BETWEEN the beats,
also the eighth notes. It will sound a bit less "bangy" and less percussive.
Also, experiment with the reverb and echo. You'll probably be able to get
away with more reverb than echo, but be careful not to use too much.
Great piece, though, and good luck! If you would like me to help you with it,
I'd be glad to. Can folks on this website exchange GarageBand files?
Sincerely,
Cameron Kopf [ Reply to This ]
is it half a quarter or an eighth ? &mdash 08/08/04 - 06:13:46 PM
really nice piece of work . . .
i don't know anything about these 8ths and 16ths
people talk about when you do a classical track . . .
. . . i'm pretty sure they aren't talking about puff
weights . . . but anyway, this is a lovely bit of music
nice one ! [ Reply to This ]
Harmonic and complete &mdash 09/14/04 - 07:09:34 AM
The strings are just on point. Good use of harmonies. It's
always hard to find strings that don't sound like
synthesizer strings... So this is not bad, but it would sure
sound fantastic with a realistic orchestra. I experimented
with splitting up violins and viola parts and giving
different equalizers to them, also positioning them
slightly differently on the balance scale. That worked great
for my Etude #1. For this song, I think everything is great,
but adding a little bit more dreaminess to the piano would
just give that tiny little extra. [ Reply to This ]
lovely &mdash 02/08/05 - 08:33:48 PM
I love this melody. I enjoyed the chords in the strings, too. Simple and lovely. Would be really nice with more of a free rhythm...a bit of give and take. Great song! [ Reply to This ]
very nice &mdash 03/03/05 - 10:21:39 PM
This is a very nice piece. I think the melody is interesting, and the overall feeling is minimalist without losing a broad texture.
I think the main thing holding this piece back is the piano sound. It just doesn't matter how good the synth or sampled sound is, nothing compare to the real thing. I think this would be absolutely beautiful on a 12 foot Bosendorfer or Steinway!
If you ever get sheet music for this piece, I'd like to have it and give to my wife to play. She's a top-notch pianist, and I'd like to hear someone of her calibre give it a go.
As for your playing, there were minor gaffs here and there, but much better than anyone like me could play (I took a mandatory 4 years of piano lessons in college and I still suck big time).
Great effort. [ Reply to This ]
very nice &mdash 03/03/05 - 10:23:04 PM
Just noticed that during my last post, I was hit number "666" for this song entry.
Yikes!
