Description:
This is the very first song I wrote back in early 1993. My marriage was in it's infancy and our first child was due in a couple of months. My partying days were seemingly over. Naturally, I was thinking of those "good old days" when this this was written.

I recorded the acoustic guitar and vocal on seperate tracks simultaneously in one continuous take. The track was then sent to stevec and Texas Feel for bass and lead guitar- my conditions were that they learn it and then record it in one take- the goal was to create a played "LIVE" recording. The next challenge was to add drums. For this, themasses was recruited. His task was not easy- I wanted a played live sound and my tempo tends to waver somewhat.

The Band:
aclarke- vocals, Acoustic Guitar
Texas Feel- Lead Guitar
stevec- Bass
themasses- Drums

Produced by Alimar

Lyrics:
Here is the story and I tell you the truth
It happened just this way
s'bout me and my buddies
and growing up in the glory days
This is a song of youth, of life and of friends
They were the ones who would stick by your side
Until the end

Well pick me up at 8 o'clock
We'll drink some beers then hit the bars
and if you're low on gasoline
Well, hell we'll take my car
someone's got to drink lite beer
so we all arrive all right
Mom and Dad, I won't be home tonight

I'm not a poet
a singer of love songs or lullabyes
that make you cry
But I'd like to tell you the things we did
Just to get by

Cruisin' to the beach
on a sunny summer afternoon
Kickin' back on the sand
and cranking out those tunes
We were head over heels just trying to impress
the pretty girls
But that was a distant time
a different world

The years have flown by
the situations changed and so have we
We fought it for awhile but now we're grown up
and raising families
And I never thought I'd say these words out loud
but I got a good job
a little house on the hill
and a big old family car

Well pick me up at 8 o'clock
We'll drink some beers then hit the bars
and if you're low on gasoline
Well, hell we'll take my car
someone's got to drink lite beer
so we all arrive all right
Mom and Dad, I won't be home tonight

Well pick me up at 8 o'clock
We'll drink some beers then hit the bars
and if you're low on gasoline
We can take my wife's car
someone's got to drink iced tea
so we all arrive all right
Tell your wife
you won't be late tonight
tonight
tonight

Excellent, soulful singing, Adam. I'd love to be in a bar with you guys

The Title scared me - nostalgia and such, But NO and NO. Totally
Fresh.

Great Band, here, with a Cool concept on the One Track Takes! Works
Fabulous. Compliments to All.

AC, the Energy and Articulation of the Vocal is going to send me back
to my A. Clarke file, because this is Really Dynamic and Crisp. Clearly,
you are Totally on Game, here.

Quite a Pleasure, this one.

Very Best,

Hey Coop- Glad you were digging this! Funny thing is I never really settled on a
name until I started working on this project... guess I could have put a little
more thought into it :)

I'm glad you were able to get something from the vocal- I feel both my singing
and guitar playing suffer when I try to do both at the same time! A big PHEW!
Always glad when you stop by Coop!

Say, AC

I'm willing to bet that certain things are even Better when you do the Vocal and
guitar (if it is not impossibly complicated, say a Rhy Guit part) at the same time;
the flow and momentum, the sense of build in the Dynamics, No?

I'm OK with losing this bet, but I'll bet there are lots of strengths, there.
However you did This Vocal, please Keep Right on Doing It!

Compliments,

I'm glad you shared the history of putting this track together. it makes it
even more interesting to listen to. This sounds like a BAND playing
together.
Getting to be a responsible adult has its bummer moments, but in the
aggregate, it sure beats the alternatives : )
I'm glad I hit upon this ( I don't usually do the 'rock' genre) Good song.

Great song, Adam, Great job everyone!! That was a smart idea to keep the track intact all the way through with your contingency of continuous playing to the learned song - it definitely yielded a contiguously original piece. Sounds like you guys have played together a long time.

Thanks for this.

Fun Song &mdash 03/27/06 - 06:20:41 PM
Nice one, Adam. The vocal reminds me a bit of Joe Walsh and that got me
thinking how this song could have gone in an entirely different direction.
But it's got a goodtime feel just the way it is.

Good work all around. Yep... the party's over. ;-)

Fun Song &mdash 03/27/06 - 08:21:42 PM
Talk to me, Joe. What kind of direction? You speak, I listen...! I've never had my
voice compared to Joe Walsh- so that in itself is very, very cool!

We built from my guitar and vocal which was played almost exactly as it was
written 13 years ago- so to be candid, I never thought of going a different way
with this song. Seriously, let me know what you are thoughts are. ~Adam

Sounds live to me &mdash 03/27/06 - 10:01:39 PM
- sometimes there's more satisfaction from these one-take songs than
putting hours of time into "perfecting" each part. I like the way
everything sounds so gelled - like you're in a room together. I can
hear the Joe Walsh connection, but I think Dion's closer to the mark
with John Cougar M. I can almost hear you all sitting down for a beer
together after the take :)

Thanks, Neil. It's no secret I'm a Mellen Head. I learned the basics of guitar by
playing to his tracks. This song was written about the time I had finally decided
to get better at guitar- hence the Mellencamp influence on my songwriting and
some of my "vocalistic stylings" ;)

Can't give the guys enough credit for understanding my vision for the tune and
making it come to life.

one of the highlights of my time here at macjams. It has given me new
acquaintances, new collab opportunities and a truly pleasureable
challenge which has taught me alot. The end result is remarkable
considering the remoteness of the group.

In one of our many email discussions you had mentioned that you
wanted this to sound like four guys playing live, drinking a few beers
and having a blast. Well, to my ear, that is how this sounds. A complete
success.

Great tune Adam. Great work guys.

old song new &mdash 03/28/06 - 03:58:31 PM
As one ages, I think it's important to revisit earlier periods and submit the good and the bad to examination. There are a couple of interesting twists to that idea here - going beyond the simple presentation of an old rock song.

One is the process - taking that old song and producing it as a collaboration with online companions, with a specific goal of acheiving a "live" feel to it ... and hitting the mark. That is remarkable.

But what I really like about this effort is the coda, with the tempo shift communicating the sense of change, that things are now different, and then you lay it out in the lyrics with a perfect light touch of humor - taking the wife's car and drinking the designated ice tea. Very nicely done.

old song new &mdash 03/29/06 - 07:56:51 PM
It's interesting how you mentioned revisiting and examination of the past. This
song was on the shelf for several years when I decided to mix things up with the
tempo shift.

Funny tidbit that started at the same time as the tempo change- for the longest
time my son made be change the word "hell" to "hey" because he didn't like me
swearing. I received special permission to sing it as written for this project. :)

Hey David- if you consider North America as one big room... lol. Glad you liked
and I know Kevin will appreciate the comment from you about the drums...
believe me, he worked his tail off to get that sounding right.

As far as the car goes- I had a not as nice version of the top car- 1949 Dodge
Wayfarer- I paid $300 for it in 1983. Money well spent! The lower car is how I
imagine it looks today.

It is remarkable to note that this song has bounced around among four
different artists in a virtual world, each one contributing his masterful
skill into the musical pool and ultimately producing a song that came out
as desired -- an awesome live-sounding production! Thanks to
technology for it has allowed these great musicians to collaborate in such
an easy way... Nevertheless, no amount of digital technology can replace
or reproduce the admirable human musical talents that AClarke,
Texasfeel, Stevec and Themass have demonstrated in this song, which will
undoubtedly be recognized as one of Macjams great collaborations.

Takin me back... &mdash 04/02/06 - 10:55:10 PM
To all involved - great work. Thanks for the early listen on this one. Very
"live" sounding & clean. There are imperfections, but they add to the live
feel and don't detract from the song. This song is what it is. Again, good
work!

I heard a click & pop at the beginning tho, but I don't know if it was an
actual pop or that pesky quicktime glitch.

Takin me back... &mdash 04/21/06 - 03:41:04 AM
Hey Darren- the imperfections were planned...in a way. When I recorded the
vocal and acoustic guitar there was no click track or metronome used- in part
because I couldn't find a clean way to deal with the tempo changes at the end.

I think Steve and John were a little taken aback when I asked them to just give
me a decent "live" track along with any little mistakes they might have made.

I hear the pop thing too- but only on the streaned version. Must be the QT
issue.

Thanks for the early feedback and the final listen!

not bad &mdash 04/03/06 - 07:52:36 AM
I like the lyrics and the sentiment of the song. I find the clean lead guitar to be a little distracting - I would like to hear it a little lower in the mix. The vocals are pretty well done and I think they have a little bit of an early-Dylan-meets-Knopfler phraseology, if that makes any sense. Nice piece.
