Description:
Many, many thanks to Roxylee, rschletty, snowdragon, and RickW for coming together as the Dadwin Hawkins Singers (hat tip to Edwin Hawkins of gospel fame). They really make this song come alive. This version is what I had in mind when I first started to record this song. Version 1 has the standard ending. Version 2 has the Sir George Martin outtake ending #2.
Song art is a photo I took of the sunrise over the Atlantic Ocean sailing north in the Gulf Stream about 50 miles off the coast of north Florida in June 2001.
All instruments are live except for drum loops.
Lyrics:
Just trying to tune my life
To the music from above.
Just trying to sing my song
Somehow to reflect his love.
Chorus:
To God be the glory (3X)
For the things He has done.
Just trying to walk the walk
Words alone come undone.
Just trying to choose the right path
Before me each day as I run.
Chorus
Bridge;
And when the evening comes
And the night descends,
Pray I find another day
In the light of Him.
Just trying to turn my heart
Toward the rising sun.
I’m aiming to live my life
In a manner worthy of the One.
Chorus
For all the many things He has done…

like that choir &mdash 04/02/06 - 01:06:13 PM
certain parts in that choir had a very special feeling! I hope you
continue to go with this. Would love to hear continual lush DH singers
of course with Dadai. Love how my head swims in certain parts of that
choir.
Like the Roxy Lee almost madonna sound, very cool. This is something
I've not heard much on MJ, and would love to hear this really perfected
to the higths.
I long for the lush almost montavani-choir-pop sound. Something I
starv for because of all the dance rocknroll kind of pushed it away a
bit.
Not that I don't like rock. But I miss terribly the beautiful music I heard
when kid like Percy Faith etc.
Keep going with this! [ Reply to This ]

Bill, it was really cool to receive all these vocal tracks and add them to this song. It is what I originally had hoped and planned for this song. And I will say that Roxylee stands out here.... what a beautiful voice. I was amazed at how perfectly she blended in when I first put her track with the song before the others came in. Here is the url link to a version with only her vocal track added:

good to hear from you.

Another era &mdash 04/02/06 - 03:52:26 PM
It sounds like it comes from my childhood. Very well put together and I
love the message. Don't hear many things like this but I can really relate.
Good job. It sounds like a lot of work went into it. [ Reply to This ]

Maybe you could say there are some things from childhood that are good not to outgrow. This was a very satisfying experience for me from start to finish... collaborating with some fine people.

cool stuff &mdash 04/02/06 - 05:27:24 PM
The beginning of the bouncy/lilting music reminds a little of the Mando/
Rebsie "Man next Door" song... which made me smirk, since the lyrics
couldn't be more distant. Gorgeous singing by all involved, you can hear
each of you singing in your own ways, but they all fit together so sweetly.
And as usual, Roxylee has to get the last word in there at the end (wink)...
just kidding, I thought that was a great ending, actually. Very tasteful
orchestration & nice song. Now off to listen to the B-side ending.

cool stuff &mdash 04/07/06 - 09:09:51 AM
Drak, I am glad you mentioned about each of the voices... that you could hear them as individuals as well as the whole chorus section. I put a little work into trying to separate and adjust those tracks in order to do just that.
And yeah... Roxy gets the last word in!

Hey &mdash 04/03/06 - 08:41:56 AM
I think I got Schletty's choir robes by mistake!
First of all, I can swim in this thing there's so much fabric. And second,
there's taco sauce all over the sleeve.
Now let's do RockamysoulinthebosomofAbraham.
Sounds good D :) [ Reply to This ]
Hey &mdash 04/03/06 - 11:55:18 AM

This one sounds real good over headphones... &mdash 04/03/06 - 08:08:23 PM
...and it sounds really good LOUD...
Did you put up a new mix of this mix or something? I know I was under
the weather yesterday when I first listened, but I'd swear it just sounds
better as I come back to it tonight...
I like the feeling of humility that comes through this, and the feeling of
friendship among the singers... what my more devout friends would
call the feeling of "fellowship"...
I could nitpick the trace of 60 cycle hum that pops up from the
keyboard, or stuff like that, but really, Jack, you always get the feeling
right... I always get a sense of sincerity from what you do... Your songs
never sound 'posed' to me...

Hey Ed... no, same mix... new day?
I don't claim humility... too much latent (and active) self-pride lurking in this guy. But, when I was writing these lyrics I was very aware of how the christian life is a process... a life of adjustments and inch by inch movement (by His help) to becoming a someone better each day. As it is said, more like Him. As the various vocals came in, I was amazed at the similar sense of enjoyment and authenticity each one brought to their singing. It does feel like fellowship. It reminds me of a line from an old hymn, "Though 'sundered far, by faith we meet, around one common mercy seat."
Funny, I don't plan out these songs. Musically I try something and if I like it then I move on to the next instrument. Sometimes I think I will redo an instrument (and probably should) but later when it seems to work witin the whole, I keep it. Very on the fly kinda thing. I don't know how others do it... but that's me.
Thanks, once again for listening, and for your insightful comments.

YES &mdash 04/13/06 - 02:14:00 AM
Yes!
The previous version of the song was just wonderful! This one is
completely great! The Dadwin Hawkins Singers has added so much life
and warmth to a song that was already beautiful!
(am a little sad that I came in so late with my straight tens, (have had a
period of intense and rewarding work))...

Yes indeed... Roxylee, snow, RickW, and Richard make this song really come alive. Again, many thanks to those guys for helping out on this song. I'd love to do a reprise sometime. Curry, it is always great to hear from you. A most blessed Easter to you.

melody matching &mdash 05/05/06 - 11:37:59 AM
Great melody - a perfect match to the theme of your song of praise.
I like the loose styling of the chorus, how they both sing together and apart from each other, which adds a broader dimension to the piece. It tells you there are a group of individuals participating in a communal activity.
And - as usual - by just knocking it out, you have come up with another fresh production. [ Reply to This ]
how cool is this??? &mdash 06/25/06 - 10:25:48 AM
a very distinguished ensemble... I will get my voice in the next one... as
a matter of fact I am singing with you now...
good job Jack... I love what you 're doing [ Reply to This ]

heheh... it was cool to do. I'd love to collab with you in a song like this. I hope the opportunity presents itself one day. I was really overwhelmed by the help I received from these macjammers. Once again, let me thank Roxylee, Richard Schletty, RickW, and last but not least, Craig Bakay (aka snowdragon).
