Keywords:
Lee (11)clavinova (6)Caroline (57)1920's (1)
Description:
i went to gb to open up a track for something else (original) and i found this - lee recorded it for me weeks ago - it was written in 1924 - i like lonnie's version better but what the hey - i needed to sing something - hope you like it x

Lyrics:
Oh-me, oh-my, oh-you
Whatever shall I do
Hallelujah, the question is peculiar
I'd give a lot of dough
If only I could know
The answer to my question
Is it yes or is it no

Does your chewing gum lose its flavour
On the bedpost overnight
If your mother says don't chew it
Do you swallow it in spite
Can you catch it on your tonsils
Can you heave it left and right
Does your chewing gum lose its flavour
On the bedpost overnight

Now the nation rise as one
To send their honoured son
To the White House
The nation's only White House
To voice their discontent
Unto the Pres-I-dent
To ask this burning question
That has swept this continent

Does your chewing gum lose its flavour
On the bedpost overnight
If you pull it out like rubber
Will it snap right back and bite
If you paste on the left side
Will you find it on the right?
Does your chewing gum lose its flavour
On the bedpost overnight

Here comes a blushing bride
The groom is by her side
Up to the altar
As steady as Gibraltar
The groom has got the ring
It's such a pretty thing
As he slips it on her finger
The choir begins to sing

Does your chewing gum lose its flavour
On the bedpost overnight
Would you use it on your collar
When your button’s not in sight?
Put your hand beneath your seat
And you will find it there all right!
Does your chewing gum lose its flavour
On the bedpost overnight

What a delightful musical offering this is!

This sets up a perfect atmosphere for vintage Bisbee, actually....you've got a gig waiting for you here, dance-hall gal and rickey-tickey saloon pianist!

Very nice blend of piano and voice -- Lee ticklin' those 88s while you burst forth into song....I can almost hear you LAUGHING as you vocalize. (Smiling, at the very least!)

Great choice, whimsical lyrics suit you to a "T".

classic &mdash 04/06/06 - 02:18:28 PM
Ha-ha-hah, I was about to write I remember the original version, but then I see you've dated it to 1924, which is a little bit before my time.

I do remember Lonnie Donegan's 1961 version (I had always assumed he wrote it), which included the question, "If tin whistles are made of tin, what do they make fog horns out of?"

Nice nuanced reading here of a "classic."

clever you - yes!! the only version i knew was lonnie's too and then i found where he had pinched it from - smart boy that he was!!! it's amazing what you find in a book of songs from the 1920's!!!

i remember what they make fok'orns outta!!!

and - please - let me assure you - i do NOT remember the 20's!!!! hahahaha

thanks for dropping by!

Priceless! &mdash 04/06/06 - 03:51:16 PM
Thanks for the history lesson ... I'd heard this one on the Dr. Demento show back in the early 80s. That version is a lot more slapstick-y, for sure. I enjoyed your run at it. As with "Coconuts", your voice is so perfectly suited to this genre. Your enthusiasm is essential. Propers to Lee's keys. Very nice tone, well-recorded. Another pink and fluffy peach for a spring day!

As a PS: I'd feel bad for the honoured son if he were to approach the Bush White House. I fear the answer would be chock full of made-up words like "strategery".

Don't think I've ever heard the full version of this Caro - I was quite
young when Lonnie Donnergan's version came out - young enough to
think it was soooooo funny.
What would MJ do without you?!
Thanks,

... to the Lonnie Donegan asides.

(If tin whistles are made out of tin... what are foghorns made of?)

Delightful, Caroline. Believe it or not I used to do the Lonnie Donegan
version in one of my early acoustic/electric groups (complete with kazoo
and spoons). Always a crowd-pleaser... Much like you. Cheers. ;-)

kazoo!!! spoons!!! where were you when i needed you?!!! i know!! i loved those asides too but i decided to sing it just the way it was written in 1924 - before mr. donegan got hold of it!!! thanks for dropping by - good thing you left the pix the same - i would never have recognised you else!!! xox

cute &mdash 04/07/06 - 04:09:45 PM
I would say that it does. But Its been a few years since I tried it.

Maybe if I chew for only a few seconds, if at all, before setting it on the
bedpost. I think that it might just retain its taste.

Perhaps a better question would be:
"Does your chewing gum lose its flavour
On the bedpost overnight ... if you've already been chewing it for an
extended period of time" (Joking)

Funny song!

[ Reply to This ]
cute &mdash 04/08/06 - 02:05:53 AM
okay du - now we are conducting a survey - when your sticks of gum arrive, plz chew one for 10 seconds only and then place on the bedpost - after 24 hours take a temperature reading and get back to us! then repeat but chew each piece for an extra 10 seconds until you have chewed for a period of 48 hours!! see you later!! xoxox

I couldn't make my mind up about this at first-[so used to Lonnie's version]- but by the end of it it I was powerless to resist. Full of gentle period charm. It's not easy to re create this sound and make it convincing as well, but you have succeeded with flying colours. So refreshing to hear this in the midst of today's overcompressed sounds. I must mention the vocals which were perfect, not many could pull this one off.The piano was also just right. I had no idea the song was that old. I shall check out more of your work. Thank you.

John.
