Description:
The final version of this song can be found on iTunes on my album, "120". Thanks for listening!
I've been thinking about castles. My three year old twin daughters do too. Coincidence? I think not. This song is for them. My little princesses.
I wrote this and recorded it in about a half hour after talking with RC Andrews about our favorite chords and why we gravitate toward them. And who can leave out Alimar? Why, he is the inspiration behind the flute. Thanks, guys!
My first attempt at 3/4 time, this is a pretty simplistic little lullaby-type song. Also inspired by one of my favorite composers, Yann Tiersen.

Thanks, Stun. They haven't heard it yet, but I'm sure they'll do what all 3 yr old
princesses would do -- put on all their princess gear and dance like little
lunatics. :-)

simple...y grand &mdash 04/07/06 - 06:37:40 AM
Your 3/4 piece is very pretty, it has the flowing MC style, it is sparse, it
has a nice melody(!), and you play the parts quite nicely on the kb.
Overall I quite enjoyed listening to this. I'm wondering if there was a part
in you that was just iching to pull out the JP4 strings and add a few bits in
there that really cried for them, and you restrained yourself? I could hear
you longing to create a few more tracks... but I think the simplicity of this
is part of its delightful charm.

You know, you're right. There was something really liberating about doing
something so spontaneous and not having to obsess over all the little tweaky
stuff I normally do. My other tendency is to add many layers (as you know), so I
definitely had to practice a little restraint here. :-) Thanks Drak!

A simplistic little lullaby?... &mdash 04/07/06 - 02:16:44 PM
You kill me... - Every time I hear another one of your pieces I think to
myself oh, she's been holding back on us... Each tune seems to always
display more in technical abilities; staging, structure, presentation
more in melodic expressions or phrasings, which allows for the ever
growing number of differing, but deep and true emotions. I can hear
your growth, but that's different... What I hear in the growth
department is more like a sense of confidence you're attaining that
allows you to open up and share more of your deepest self. You are
choosing to express different things and at different times because
your talents hand you these options like a servant to his keeper. Each
tune requires a different array of sensibilities, and whatever is required
of each piece is what you are gifted with to provide. That makes this
the gift that truly keeps on giving... And thank you for that.
By the pure graciousness of your being, I am content and thoroughly
pacified, at this moment... But still...

A simplistic little lullaby?... &mdash 04/07/06 - 02:34:54 PM
It's likely that I'm up to seven listens I'm sure - And yeah, this one is as
tender and as vulnerable as it gets - Yes, I might keep this in far away places
and behind well guarded, huge and really thick, gated walls - Uh huh,
castles...

You're not really an architect, are you. I think you're secretly plugged in to my
psyche. your words mean the world.

hauntingly beautiful.. &mdash 04/07/06 - 08:23:01 PM
or beautifully haunting? like the image, you're toying with us. what starts
as a child-like lullably slowly deepens.. ages.. turns into something not
naive at all, but mature, glorius & a maybe a little saddened by days
passed. then-looking forward to see it all come around. again
hmmm.. or is it your way of setting the bar for that new house? [ Reply to This ]
Chords with your beautiful Melody &mdash 04/07/06 - 09:41:18 PM
I like the chord patterns in this. Playful again. Allmost like a waltz or ballad of some sort. The flute adds to that atmostphere. Then you throw in some of your beautiful melodies to top it off. Wonderful Job. Adding it to my Miss Chaos Collection (as with most everything of yours)

3/4 or 6/8 &mdash 04/10/06 - 12:25:59 PM
I know to a mathamatician they are the same... as soon as your long
flute lines and piano melodies come in... they give this piece a flowing
6/8 feel....3/4 always feels choppy... this flows [ Reply to This ]

Beautiful, sad... To me the spontaneous ones are usually the most powerful. This is moving in many ways, and just drips with emotion. I think if this had been further developed you may have lost some of that. I know I will listen to this again and again. [ Reply to This ]

Thanks, jmt. I just read the comment below yours and it fascinates me how we
hear these emotions differently. A delicate piano melody can dance around while
a solomn cello can bring a most certain expressively sad flavor. And when you've
got both happening simultaneously, I guess you could hear it either way. The
sadness is there just as you said, yep. Really glad you liked this. :-)

I love the fluteline. I added this to an iTunes playlist with my own

pipes pieces to make a decent length playlist. Thanks! :) [ Reply to This ]
The Flute &mdash 05/04/06 - 01:26:09 AM
I'm curious did you try another instrument other than flute? Oboe, English Horn or even a violin might be interesting.

The Flute &mdash 05/04/06 - 07:59:28 AM
Strings comprise the bass end of the song, so violin sounded monotonous. I
knew I wanted flute to complete the whimsical feel I sought. Oboe, horns or
other woodwinds would not have the obvious breathy & wavering quality that
the flute inherently has. I know people are sometimes predisposed to hating the
sound of flute (or any other instrument, for that matter). I'm guilty of it, too.
Thanks for inquiring. :-)

Structure of Stones &mdash 11/01/06 - 11:21:13 PM
In a note to me earlier this evening you mentioned your grandmother's Steinway... This little piece reminded me of a country house in the 1840s and the surrounding, uncomplicated life it must have been home to. I particularly like the uncluttered quality of the number. It is not at all pretentious; rather, it's evocative and to the point. I am glad you did not muck it up with a big old orchestration, but left it alone to have its own little life. I enjoyed "visiting" with you... :)

Beautiful. Matches the artwork very nicely.

Thanks so much for listening to this one. Not sure why, but it seems to get the least hits. Perhaps "Classical" is a turn-off? :-) Anyhow, glad you appreciate the simplicity of this one. It turned out to be a great exercise for me. Thanks again and take care.

Oooh yes ... &mdash 05/06/07 - 06:08:59 AM
This is lovely, and the melody is sweetness itself. I have a special love of 3/4 (and 6/8 and 9/8 for that matter) and this is a perfect example of the lilting effect it has, and done with such lightness of touch. I'm doing what any 38-year-old princess would do, which is downloading it and giving it a few spins to try to fire my imagination, and then dancing like a lunatic. [ Reply to This ]
