Description:
WARNING EXPLICIT - (and extremely strange) ..... Listen at your own risk: This song started out as an instrumental by Kennybender called Groovy Sunday (http://www.macjams.com/song/18828) and during the collaborative process Kenny kindly extended the original version so that I could fit in all the lyrics I had intended for it (called Groovy Sunday Extended version found on Kennybenders page). In my attempts to learn ... I did the mixing myself and found some hurdles I could not get across and am looking to the Macjams community for advice on how to mix this type of thing well .... I found that when attempting to eliminate some hiss/whine/or crackle the vocal tracks lost some of their integrity and/or came out muddy or muffled. This was especially true on the vocal track which I used the pitch/stretch feature on. As for the song itself (lyrics and design of the vocals) ..... the song is about "emotional" walls that people put up ... and in this particular case .. those walls eventually took on a life of their own ..... to the point where the walls not only speak to the person who created them ... but help to ensure that they stay up ..... by convincing her that she needs her walls. This song has many twists ... turns .... and tempo changes ... please listen to the end and definitely leave constructive comments and advice on how to "clean it up" ..... this has been a really fun, interesting and different project for me to be a part of .....

Lyrics:
Walls – whisper to me – all the dreams I’ve never had
And those which never will be

Walls – tell me – of my sorrow and shame
My rage and my pain
Walls – that only I can see

Walls – scream at me – the ghostly silence
This sick world full of sick people
All afraid to talk to each other – all afraid to believe

Walls – be my solace – my one true lover
My guardian angel – my warmth – my desire
The air that I breathe

Walls – come dance with me
Come laugh – come cry – come fantasize
Walls – come drink with me
Be free

Walls – wrap around me
Am I crazy? – walls be me
Walls – be my companion - Faithful and true
Walls – help me to see

Walls – grasp my sanity – keep it weary
Tell me lies and half truths
Oh walls – please deceive me

Walls kiss my shadow – hold it in your embrace
While I hold my head and cry invisible tears
Walls – walls never leave - Never leave

Walls – sing of freedom - From my own imagination
Ghosts from the past – ghosts yet to be
Those which are real
Walls – set me free - Walls – set me free
Walls ………. Set me free
Walls kiss my shadow – hold it in your embrace
While I hold my head and cry invisible tears
Walls never leave - Walls never leave
Tell me lies and half truths
Walls deceive …… me

Holy brick-by-brick!!! &mdash 04/09/06 - 03:13:37 PM
This was twisted, sick, depressing, scary, and I swear I would never
have clicked the FAVE and Download button, I have absolutely no idea
how my mouse moved over that and clicked them (over and over.)

uh...

OK, I've regained my composure somewhat. What was I saying? Oh,
yes... critique. From the very first eyeball-rattling super sub-bass hits,
I was totally hooked, drawn in, and could not do anything but listen.
This is absolutely awesome! KennyBender has a great piece of music
there, and you wrote some seriously disturbing lyrics, and man did you
sing this perfectly! Broke me out in a cold sweat listening to your
demented torturous descent. I liked the pitch-slowed voice as the
wall-call, but we need to just hire Tim Curry to do the VO for that part.
I love your singing and harmonies in this. And yes, this song is
crippled somewhat by not-so-clear vocal recording/mixing.
Personally, I think there's so much potential in this song, that I'd
suggest asking for somebody with some mixpertise to help with this...
this song NEEDS to be re-recorded to become the tour-de-force that it
wants to be. The singing is clipping in a lot of places (recorded too
loud), and needs to be EQed to be a little clearer. The "wall-voice",
because it is pitch-slowed, is hard to understand, and that may be why
you boosted its volume up... I think it needs to be a regular (low man's)
voice instead, and if that's recorded clearly, it can be put back further
in the mix so it doesn't interfere and sound cheesy... this sounded a
little too loud and a little cheesy. But please, we need this song redone
into the masterpiece it soooo wants to be! Awesome work you two!

Off to drink some coffee to thaw that chill down my spine!
ttfn,
Drakonis, agape

Love it!
Just watch for the clipping on the vocals. You are right at t hat edge.
Are you using a preamp with your mic?

Wow ... those comments had me "reeling with excitement" ... and YES I totally agree there were some serious recording and mixing issues ... I struggled with mixing this one .. and really do need some help ... I did use a pre-amp ... and oddly enough ... I was actually standing a whopping 8 FEET away from the microphone ..... and my gain levels were almost non exisistent .... (my voice is just THAT loud) !!!!! I had asked a lot of people HOW to record such BELTING ROCK style vocals effectively ... but apparently none of the techniques worked for me ..... the demonic voice came out somewhat more muffled in the end due to my attempts to eliminate some of the whine/pitch sound (which somehow made its way into the mix) that was originally much stronger and he lost his clarity as a result. Anyone interested in helping re-mix this one ... please feel free to contact me.

Alannah, this proves that you can scream and wail as well as you can
croon smooth ballads. I'll say it again, as I had the privilege of pre-
auditioning this song before you posted it... you should be
appropriately reborn as Metalannah! for this heavy metal piece (yes,
with an exclamation point).

I don't have a preference for this genre of music, but it won't stop me
from saying your vocals were right on. You hit the high screaming
notes with confidence and demonstrated a new level of versatility.

Now which Alannah are you really, the metal she-devil with rage and
vengeance or the goddess with the soft, whispery sentimentality? Hard
to guess sometimes, but if you have multiple personalities, you do
carry both of them quite well.

As regards the background music, that was freaking awesome, too.
Although admittedly I hardly have a mood or taste for heavy metal, I
can imagine the thrill and energy this music generates when played
this good with a live audience. With the lure of an electric performance
and a wild night in a concert, I just might find myself at Ticketmaster,
too.

Wow Leon ... you liked it so much you said it three times ????? Actually I think this crazy type of thing is the "real" me .... hahahaha ... well musically anyway .... I prefer to sing in a "rocking / belting" tone ... and love to create "weirdness in music" ... but I am finding the experience a difficult one to mix .... as I think I have stated just about everywhere I can on this site now ... but I shall continue to experiment in many genres and enjoy every minute of it .... thanks for the feedback ..

well-done dementia &mdash 04/13/06 - 09:02:03 AM
Talk about a love/hate relationship with your house! There are issues here that can't simply be wallpapered over. This person needs to get out of the house more often! LOL!

The theme of a person interacting with the walls has been around for a while. Faron Young's 1961 version of "Hello Walls" springs to mind (written by Willy Nelson) -

Hello, walls ...
I'll bet you dread to spend
Another lonely night with me
Lonely walls
I'll keep you company."

Or The Beach Boys syrupy 1963 reality retreat -

There's a place where I can go
and tell my troubles to
In my room ....

But those laments seem pretty tame to the anxieties of this contemporary nightmare. Unique, too, is having the walls actually talking (especially when they - he - starts talking trash).

Demented, troubling ... and well-done. I agree there are a few production issues, but I think there's also a danger of overproducing it. Right now I think its rawness is rubbing the right way.

Girl, nice one. Very good guitar job. Apart from the distorion and mixing
issues this is very good.
Never thought you would be a good heavy metal singer! Nice!

well &mdash 04/15/06 - 06:30:16 AM
this is a snappy little number. eh? this had to be a catharsis for
you...because it was for me listening to it...the character in the song is
not giving up, although she is roughed up a bit by life...and she is
inspirational.

I like kenny benders music very much...a lot of effort was put in and
the guitar playing is very well done and well recorded.

I would love to hear another go at this with real recording software( I
think you're problems lie in the Adobe software...) and a full mix of
tracks. But this outstandingly creative and emotional work. The power
and quality of the performance overcome the sonic difficulties to me.

great stuff alannah

deep bows

What a fabulous comment Ziti ... thanks for giving this a listen. Strange as this tune is ... it does deserve a better mix.

Too much Darth Vader &mdash 05/04/06 - 09:19:59 PM
This has all the makings of a fantastic tune but the production, as you said, has problems. Your voice has huge power but it's lost in the mix whereas Darth is overpowering. The contrast between the two is cool but the balance is horrendous. But don't get me wrong. It's a great tune. I'm not going to analyze the band but the guitarwork in the background was extremely cool. I wanted more of your voice and it was pissing me off that I wasn't getting it. I did catch at times a kind of growly power drive from you that was way, way cool but it should have been mixed much higher. More Alannah!!!!!!

Too much Darth Vader &mdash 05/05/06 - 10:21:17 PM
The major issues with the mixing was that I was attempting to mix POST to what was originally a BAD recording of my vocals .... I learned AFTER that if you don't get a halfway decent recording ... there is NOTHING that can be done effectively afterthefact to attempt to fix it .... I have YET to truly SING the way I normally SING live because I just keep peaking out !!!! yup .... I actually Don't need a microphone to be heard at the back of the room .. heh heh .... this is why most of my tracks on Macjams are of the Softer variety .... normally I am a BELTER Rock singer .... just need to learn how to effectively record it in the first place .... after a couple more of my softer postings ... (I have a couple in the works ....) I shall get down to the Heavy Metal and have another go at this genre ..... thanks for the compliments on the voice tho, Alan, ..... one can never hear enough of THAT THEN !!

Almost a year to the day since the last comment on this song ... thanks for taking the time to listen and comment to one of my oldies .... hahaha (one year an oldie) ... I like this one cause it was such a challenge for me to try and mix the sound (as you can see from the comments etc. there were still LOTS of issues at the time of posting) ... but I always liked it myself just the way it was ... problems and all!

Talk Demonic &mdash 04/05/08 - 12:25:51 AM
This would sound good played very late, in the Dungeon, near Bourbon and Toulouse, in the French Quarter. And there is a Grace Slick quality to this that is quite haunting.....

thanks Northpoint ... &mdash 04/17/08 - 04:21:49 PM
.. I suspect that this one would have sounded better had I recorded the original vocals properly in the first place (it was very hard trying to mix out those sections that went into the RED) .... and my lack of mixing skills didn't help matters much either ... but the dungeon awaits nonetheless!
