There is a big Barnes and Nobles that is taking over an area were I live.
The small bookstore near it is protesting to no avail.

Yes, this is a phenonomen across the western world it seems. You end up
with both insipid uniformity and economic cleansing.

This is a very rough recording,but maybe I'll do a nicer one. I have dozens of
songs waiting to be taped and I'm having trouble deciding which ones could
go the distance and end up half reasonable.

Ah ha - you truly are the wordsmith of Watford! Lots of edge and rage at
a disturbing dynamic of modern life (who exactly does want all those
Yuppie flats?) Great guitar and that harmonica reminded me of It's
Immaterial's 'Driving Away From Home.' I think you might have to work
on your scrolling a bit - toe exercises have been a big help to me I can
now scroll with my left pinkie...

I am deciding to record more songs as they're written - guitar and voice.
More of a personal record than anything else so I can come back to good
ideas for further polish.

Ooooh, my pet subject for rants ... the trashing of English towns for
short term economic gain. I'm still foaming at the mouth that one of
Cheltenham's last functional spa buildings was demolished in 2003 to
make way for a patch of 'landscaping' next to Waitrose car park ... now
just a patch of dogshit and weeds because they stopped looking after
it as soon as they got planning permission for their loathsome
superstore. Ooh God, don't get me started ...

I think this is great. Just the right balance of impassioned strumming
and melodic interest. There's a confidence in your voice and guitar
which gives the song a bounding energy. You have some chops on that
harmonica too. And the lyrics are fab.

Hahahahahaha ... stopping in the middle of a song to scroll down to
see the rest of the words ... that's a classic.

Certainly the prettiest shit I've come across in a while. (You really are
the worst judge of your own music, you know!)

Oooh, I do love a good rant, don't you? Yes, this is one of my favourite topics
too.

It's just as applicable to the grimey towns as the prettier rural towns. What is
the point of development, much of it sanctioned or directly funded by local
councils, if it actually makes people poorer both in actual monetary terms and
in quality of life?

Time after time, all over the UK, great fleapit venues have become stainless-
steel Barcardi Breezer chain joints, great local record and bookstores stores
close in the face of megastores. As people complain about what they've lost,
those that allowed it to happen bleat that 'it's what people want'. Also that
it's 'brought jobs' - not counting the ones destroyed, of course, and which
usually consist of people handing out sugary snacks in kiosks in shopping
centres.

And just how many coffee/nail bars can any one town sustain anyway?

Oh, you know all this already, fellow ranter... rant over.

I have an anti-Tesco song you might like. I'll try and tape it soon.

This song needs to be raw to work. An overly-refined production would simply be another form of gentrification, which would work at cross-purposes to the social-political commentary.

Likewise - this type of production is what makes macjams a special place. Just as cities throughout the world have been made-over to all look alike, hawking the same corporate products, so has radio been gentrified. But here I am, sitting several thousand miles (kilometers) away, listening to your piece ... and liking it because it's not slick and polished, but because it feels real.

Brings me back to the times when music were used to make a statement.
In Gothenburgh Sweden(were i live) a couple of yers ago, people fight the
Police when they took the old houses down.

But now no one care...

Nice playing and singing , great energy, made me a bit angry.......;-)

Excellent! This ranks up there with Justin Sullivan's musical rants. Witty, poetic, and oh-so-true! They're doin' the same here in Baltimore... forcing out the mom and pop businesses to put up Walmarts and Walgreens. Is this really progress?
