Description:
I think this is what used to be called power pop. This song is about .... exactly what it's called. I've always struggled to write a love song, as it all seems to have been said before - so this song is about my thought process in trying to write one.

Lyrics:
I am the only living son of a dead man,
I've been up I've been down before.
I try to say i love you but that
Word's had all it's meaning sucked out
By boy bands, black/white rappers
Maria Carey, all octave, no talent.
It kept me up, kept me up all night
This was the only love song I could write.

(take down Motortown)

Now I'm not a professor of philosophy
Or a great connoisseur of pornography.
I greet the day with a feeling of panic,
I never thought I belonged on this planet.
But honey, though your sex makes no sense at all
We are two halves of one whole.
You kept me up, kept me up all night
This was the only love song I could write.

(take down MotorTown)

Are you gonna take on Motown?
Steal Presleys crown?
When all the things to be said have been expressed.

Michael Jackson, he ain't too handsome.
Sinatras imitators pissing on his potaters.
They sang a love song with depth and feeling
They sang a love song, feels like your heart beating.

Great fun. Now this is a love song. Honest and direct. Great feel to the piece.

I like your lyrics and some of the turns of phrases. There is one quibble: I wish your rhyming was more consistent. I feel that this song needs the rhymes to provide more structure and emphasis. The places where you did rhyme were great. Even something that was a pseudo-rhyme like "panic" and "planet" lent the two phrases with some needed rhythmic punch.

My two cents worth. Overall, I really liked this song.

Hey Charlie,

I appreciate the feedback.

I used to just sing and write lyrics - since doing my own stuff, I do find I'm spending more time writing the music and spend less time on the lyrics (cos I'm really impatient and want to get the song finished).

But you've commented before on my lyrics, and it's been useful - hopefully, this song is a bit more intelligible than others. I Take your comments about the lack of rhymes in some parts and how it works against it - will take this on board writing future tracks.

Cheers for stopping by

Steve

'80s. Very &mdash 04/16/06 - 10:04:38 AM
Very catchy tune that, to me, sounds grounded in the '80s. Very reminiscent of Stan Ridgeway and Wall of Voodoo. Cool, fun lyrics too. Cheers!

Thanks jmt - didn't stan do 'camouflage?' - I remember that from my college
days.... which was in the 80's, so i guess that's why my stuff tends to sound like
it's beamed in from that era.

The lyrics could be read as an old guy ranting about todays chart music i
suppose!

Nice! &mdash 04/22/06 - 04:56:48 PM
Great songwriting! I like the part where you drop some names... This
song is a commentary on pop culture. You really have a knack for
creating songs that to me are distinctly British pop-rock, which is what
characterizes your music. That 80's-90's touch is exactly what I love
about it.

Thanks Leon - I think the urgency in what I do comes from my natural impatience!
Glad you liked this - it was nice to do something 'light' for a change.

Thanks for the post jmb.
Glad you liked it - no real instruments were hurt in the making of this track.

And I haven't heard from Carey or Jacksons lawyers yet, either!

Love Song? &mdash 06/07/07 - 04:53:30 PM
How many love songs start out with "...Son of a dead man"? Or Michael Jackson, for that matter?

Strangely, I hear a love song, even though, this is not a love song.

Your choice of instruments is really interesting and there are parts that surprised the daylights out of me. Like the boing boing boing sounds that start at "your sex makes no sense...." and the building synths the briefly show up at the last Michael Jackson part.

Really well worked out composition. Some how I missed this one when i first started exploring your work. I like it enough to download it.

Nice writing Cool music &mdash 12/16/07 - 12:09:46 PM
I don't care you don't ryhme, for me it is not essential to a good song...this is a good song! I love more the energy in the words you sing...they sound honest and that is worth more...forget about techniques and enjoy the purity of making music...I just did!!!

Kind regards,

o0o
