Keywords:
Jazz (375)Instrumental (411)New Age (93)
Description:
I started this one at my brother's house. He wanted to see how I went about starting a track. So, in Logic Express I laid down a long drum loop and proceeded to record the harp track. Anyway, when I was done I had some interesting ideas recorded, so I took the file home and worked on it. I'm a pretty terrible player (untrained, don't read music, etc), so I had to edit a lot. Then I recorded some more tracks to fill out the sound. The only pre-exisiting loops in this track are the drum loops. Everything else was played by yours truly, albeit with (in some cases extensive) editing. I'm pretty pleased with how it turned out, although I'm not sure if I'm done yet. Btw, it's called "Accidental Jam" because it's not something I planned.:)

accident and terrific &mdash 04/17/06 - 11:20:21 AM
from someone who always writes accidently, i loved this. there's a
chilled ambient feel to it. you do a nice job with those harps and
strings and what sounds like a recorder of sorts. also the drums fit
perfectly (for loops they have an excellent live feel).

Thanks, Bud! &mdash 04/17/06 - 01:59:51 PM
At last someone thought enough to comment! I was beginning to feel
invisible.:) I sometimes wonder if classifying something as Jazz might mean
the kiss of death for a song, even before it's heard--I know some people have
preconceived notions about different genres. Thanks so much for your
comment--a nice little bit of much needed validation. I'm glad there's an
appreciative audience (albeit an audience of one.;) ) Again, thanks--from one
accidental musician to another.:)

Btw, that's a flute I used in a lower register.:)

You're definitely not invisible - making sounds like this... &mdash 04/17/06 - 09:57:47 PM
What a nice accident - Afraid of what would happen if you did
something intentional - I hope that we'll get to know soon. This is rich
w/ texture, w/ a deep movement of sorts - I'm the other odd person
who loves the harp, so you got my attention right away - This is very
cool - An intensely thought provoking scene is waiting to have this
accompany it into it's forth dimension - Good job

Btw, It's been awhile sense I'm listened to Mark Isham, but he used to
be one of my favs - I'd seen him play live on a couple of occasions and
it was quite the treat - Thanks for sharing this

Thanks - Dion

Thanks, Bro! &mdash 04/18/06 - 03:08:23 PM
I'm glad this one connected with you in some way. I'm feeling my confidence
grow just a tiny bit with each positive comment, so thanks for helping to
elevate me. :)

Dramatic rising bass line harmonies &mdash 04/19/06 - 07:13:12 AM
Some very nice ideas, but, in my ears, not quite enough to sustain
throughout the track. The bass is mixed a little loud and heavy in my
headphones and the woodwinds too soft, plus everything has slightly too
much reverb accentuating the bass in a way that, in my ears, by the end,
became oppressive. I like the drama of the progression, but thought a B
Section or frequency variation (moving the voices around more) would
have helped. Very nice use of drums; are they DOD or a specific Jam
Pack?

Thank You &mdash 04/19/06 - 10:31:59 AM
Tobin, thanks for your thoughtful analysis. You're probably right on all
counts--I have as little experience with mixing as I do with music in
general.:) I wish I had the knowledge to implement some of the changes you
suggest, but sadly, I have not even the most rudimentary musical training, so
I'm doing the best I can with very little.:) I'm going on pure instinct, which can
only take me so far.:)

As for your question, the drums are from Jam Pack 3. I combined several from
the same family in a way that I felt best served the song.

Thanks again for your thoughts--maybe one of these days I'll take a music
lesson.:)

Great vibe &mdash 05/06/06 - 07:59:14 AM
All the training in the world doesn't give someone an ear or instinct. You
have both. This transports you into a story without words. The sounds
and melody were chilled but layered in an interesting way. As more
listener than audiophile, I truly enjoyed it.

Nice Track! &mdash 05/16/06 - 10:25:03 PM
I agree with the previous commenter! Talent and a good ear for mixing sounds and melodies are definitely more important than technical virtuosity. This jam proofs that you have that! Very enjoyable, spontanous feel to it and the instruments blend well. The buildup is organic and intuitive and the chords help to keep the tension. I could imagine a second theme to counter the main idea and give it another dimension as right now it moves around one chord sequence, but it's a jam, so I guess that's fine...and keep playing, you'll see how you pick up things as you go along! There are lots of talented musicians who don't read music or are not musically "trained". As long as you have a good time doing music there'll be someone having a good time listening to it!

Very tasty &mdash 05/18/06 - 09:18:45 PM
One could nit-pick some of the production elements or choices (and I
am about to) but over-all this is close to complete and the production
values match the feel of the song well. Lush and full, with the possible
exception of the drum track which seems at times to be in another
sound environment than the reverb-lush setting of the rest of the
instruments.

Very nice &mdash 05/24/06 - 02:10:51 PM
Would not know that you couldn't play that well. Ah, the magic of computers. Takes a certain kind of talent to take what you did and fix it so it sounds like it does here. Turned out well.

Great! &mdash 07/14/06 - 04:06:29 AM
Great feel here-it's got a sense of power. Creative mix and
instrumentation. Accidents can be wonderful gifts in music! The only
aspect that I personally might consider working on would be to try to
make it a bit less repetitive by either modulating (changing key) at some
point, and/or introducing a new section at some point, followed by a
return to the material you have here (ABA). But it's definitely already very
good as it stands.

Pleasant &mdash 07/16/06 - 02:31:49 PM
This was really pleasant listening, more new age than jazz per se, but I enjoyed it all the same. :)

Solid Track &mdash 07/16/06 - 06:03:40 PM
Love the piano, nice calming track. A track I could have on loop in the
background while working to get the grey matter ticking over.

Thanks for sharing.

Lurv this &mdash 09/20/06 - 02:57:41 PM
atmospheric, good mix and I love the harp. Starts to get a bit too
samey just over the hald way mark .. needs that illusive new section .. or
just bring in the outro a tad earlier.

Before I hit play &mdash 11/28/06 - 11:33:26 PM
I was digging the artwork. Great idea.

I wish you hadn't used the term terrible player to describe yourself in your description. Its a real nice groove, that has a lot of potential to build to something really powerful. I feel like this could get much bigger before the denoument at the end. Bigger percussion, a few more layers, etc over the same repeating pattern and this could be even more stirring. Good stuff though.

I agree. Dude you can play! Deep, ponderous, revealing. I do wish the drums were tracked a little louder, I seem to be stretching my ears for them. Keep it up!

Cinematic Orchestra &mdash 12/29/06 - 04:45:41 PM
This is Cinematic Orchestra. I mean it reminded me so much of it I actually paused and replayed the start over and over to try and find the track it reminded me of.
Can't find it though I'll let you know if i do later but insofar I guess it's a good comparison... Brilliant.

Accidental? &mdash 08/25/07 - 08:49:10 AM
Hard to believe you just did this by accident. Man, what would you do on purpose? Seriously, awesome piece that I really enjoyed. I imagine this would be great for driving on an open road with the wind blowing and no worries...Nice. Thank you for sharing this.

harp no harp &mdash 11/05/07 - 02:58:21 PM
hey dude, nice work. much more ambient and electronica than jazz really, maybe a bit too long for what's in.. i agree with some of the comments, it needs a contrasting section, so you can get that homecoming sort of feel with those beautiful synth layers out there. but i did enjoy it a lot nevertheless. cheers
