Keywords:
longing (31)Mystified (149)
Description:
This is the second half of an improvised work.
The vocals were set to the piano, the verse ad-libbed at the same time as the melody.

Different. Experimental.
Expressionistic.

Lyrics:
And was it dispelled?
The writhing shadows of my fate and doubt?

Can I ever break those chains of fear
And thus, realizing my freedom
Can I give light?
Give light?

And be free....

* * * * * * * * * * * * * *

The entire poem follows, below:

longing

and when i thought all sorrow had gone,
i looked upward into the endless blue--
and there i found such longing,
that the clouds could not help but gather.
and the rain did fall...
did fall...

and was it dispelled?
the writhing shadows of my fate and doubt?

can i ever break those chains of fear?
and thus, realizing my freedom,
can i give light
give light?

and be free....

Dramatic &mdash 04/20/06 - 11:54:30 AM
Very dark and emotional.
Excellent vocal performance. When it started I immediately thought: "Now
that's A LOT of reverb and/or delay!" but it really grew on me. I kinda
liked that sometimes the delays sounded like percussion.

Beautiful.

Already Aptly Described by You &mdash 04/20/06 - 11:57:57 AM
Other than the words above you used to describe this work, which are all very aptly applied, I'll just add 'lovely,' 'haunting,' and 'enchanting.'

Your work, whatever genre you write in, is always a pleasure to hear.

Ghostly vocals &mdash 04/20/06 - 12:14:27 PM
Nice to hear the trademark ambient vocalising..although they are more
ethereally haunted than ever on this track...very nice piece...draws you in.
I can imagine this working in a theatrical context...in fact I think you
should write that rock opera right now!

Wow... just wow. &mdash 04/20/06 - 08:46:25 PM
Im mystified.

Can't tell if I want something else to fill in the purposeful seeming void or
not.

Got visions of a gray stone castle sharply set in a backdrop of huge
moutain peaks. Almost like you were calling to some doubtful dragon to
come and take its place next to you. A grand transportational effect
regarding your voice. Thank you...

Quite nice to listen to this and I don't really mind that I can't
understand the words for all the delay... I can still hear the sounds and
the shapes and thats what matters to me.

My only real gripe is that the plain old delay you are using is just too
boring for this. This piece needs a Granulator and
fast! Because with just a little fiddling (say max pan and only very
small pitch changes) you can get some fantastic textures that sound
like reverb/delay but are so much richer and will easily make your
voice stand out infront of the piano instead of behind.

Lovely singing btw... and check out DuoAzzoni if you can,
two guys that do similar improvisationary stuff in Italian. Fantastic
stuff!

Thank you very much to those who have listened and commented here.
This was an experimental kind of piece--and obviously I was going more for
simplicity and mood than anything else.

Bryan--I appreciate your comments and the link to KTGranulator, especially.
I've downloaded it--now to see if I can figure out how to use it ;)
(and which version of the two I should be using?)

Thanks, all, again! :)

Which ever version works best for your setup really... but using the OSX Audio
Unit version will probably be the best for Garageband. And theres many
other interesting Mac compatable plugins avaliable at smartelectronix.com
too btw.

Yes! I have heard their improvisations. Impressive stuff--and really very cool to
see how improvisation is such a wonderful (and too often unexplored) way of
making music...

Personal &mdash 05/19/06 - 03:16:13 AM
Well, this is about the fifth time I've come back for a listen, and i
thought the least I could do is leave a comment...

It seems deeply personal, a bearing of the soul in a private moment...

It is strongly affective--I feel a jumble of emotions upon listening,
including the fear and doubt to which you refer in your lyrics, even
though the actual words are impossible to make out.

Beauty imbued with pathos.

Moving from the subjective to the objective, I'd be interested to hear
what you do with Granulator (I product I have heard of, but never
used), because, even though this amount of murky reverb was
presumably intentional, it did seem a bit much. As a composer my
thought is to try some over the top reverb at some points, but to do so
selectively, following the "less is more" adage. My other thought as a
composer is that I would be tempted to do a few different improvs,
then splice together the best bits to see if I could take make a more
composed work out of this (but possibly you did this already?). In fact,
before I knew how to notatate music very well, I would do this sort of
thing for hours. Eventually I decided I'd better learn more about how
to write down and organize my ideas, which is why I started studying
music in a more formal way.
