Keywords:
trumpet (34)violin (61)waltz (33)harmony assistant mariachi (1)romantic (32)GPO (1)
Description:
Imagine a Mexican quintette playing a fast waltz. There are 3 melodies played in 3/4 time, in a sort of non-standard ABCABC format. The title is a photographic/geographic/melodic play on words. There is a merging of European waltz and Mexican-sounding instrumentation.

This fourth version has an improved sampled violin, as well as the real trumpet performance from the prior version. The new violin part was created from the score-exported-MIDI by Bubowski, who tweaked & enhanced the expressiveness to work with the Garritan Personal Orchestra's violin, and sent me the resulting audio file to replace the old harsh violin sample I had in there. The great Russian jazz trumpet player Vladimir Galaktionov had graciously read my score and recorded his performance of this piece, and I had replaced the sampled trumpet with his live recorded performance. Anyone want to play the violin part live for this?

This has become a programmatic work for me, and the vision I have tried to capture in the music follows:

[Intro] The warm evening twilight brings a light scent of jasmine across a courtyard in Southern California, and a Mexican band begins playing a waltz. A young gentleman saunters over to a lady, who is shyly swaying to the music. He asks her to dance with him, and she accepts his hand. They sway together onto the dance floor.

[Melody 1] The dance begins with them dancing formally, with respectable distance between them. He is looking over her shoulder and leading gently, and her head is demurely bowed.

[Melody 2-3] As the dance progresses, she gains confidence and begins to look at him, and he at her, and they dance closer.

[Repeat Melody 1-3] Still unsure of each other, they return to the formal beginning of the dance. Again, they begin to feel the joyful warmth of each other and pull closer.

[Modulation] Playfully, the lady pulls away from him and out into the spotlight.

[Bridge/Melody 1] The gentleman watches as she performs her own twirling dance, just for him. He smiles and begins to clap his raised hands in time to the beat of her version of the dance.

[Melody 1-repeat] At the end of the repeat, he steps in and they dance together with increasing flair and passion.

[Melody 2-3] They flow together, seeing only each other. The rest of the world has melted away.

[Finale] As the music ends, the gentleman pulls the lady close to him, then dramatically dips her to the side.

Ah, to make this a reality with a real band playing this for my wife and I to dance to... but in the mean time, please comment on this and let us know what you think of it.

Hardware:
Eduard: Dual 1GHz G4, Vodka, 3 or 4 kisses
Vladimir: 1.6Ghz PC, Cubase SX. and AKG C3000 mic
...and the internet to connect Moscow to San Diego.

Software:
This was written and scored note-by-note by me, and performed with a mixture of Bubowski's "Garritan Personal Orchestra" sampled instruments (Violin), and GarageBand 2 stock instruments (bongos, acoustic guitar, acoustic bass), and Vladimir's real trumpet playing. Artwork is something I created using "The Gimp" and Photoshop and a photo of Vladimir.

Drak, this is so beautiful that my eyes literally teared-over very early on
in my initial play. This is without doubt the most evocative and majestic
piece I have heard yet at MJ. I don't know what else to say.

This is a brilliantly expressive piece, charged with emotion and feeling from both composer and performer. Definitely of the very best things I've heard on MacJams. I hope you continue to keep this genre in your repertoire so we can hear more like this!

Wow, i was really impressed with the quality of this piece. Aside from the
violin (which sounds great for midi by the way) it sounded like a band was
playing and the storyline definately brought an image of dancers. The
story was a nice narrative.

Excellent composition. If only i could waltz. . .

ideas that I've put into it, so she's a great collaborator here too!

Man, you're even fastidious with you - Geezzz - Okay, you've earned
the right to be who you are - Isn't that nice to know - I'm not smart
enough to comment in an objective manner about the techi stuff on
this, but I can certainly attest to my more, feelings about this - It's a
wonderful piece! - Really! It's so warm and substantial, and both at the
same time - We don't often see those two adjectives hangin out w/
each other... This piece, it leans me toward 'what is stunning' - And w/
the magic of computers, too - This one is just striking piece of work,
so get off of your back about it already - eh eh - Just kidding, of
course - I drive me crazy, so I know that's it's not necessarily true that
it's always a comfortable to be the way that I'm inferring that you are :d
- Very nice work - I wonder if anyone will step up to the plate for the
violin part - What an opportunity... Excellent job, Eduard - just
Excellent - And thanks for all of your hard work on this - Dion

appreciate you overlooking my hand-entered guitar-strumming, and enjoying
the overall music. However, I do have it on my to-do list to redo that guitar part
sometime, it needs to be spiced up a little bit, without distracting from the two

Thank you! This has come a long way, partly with better sounding instruments,
and partly as I worked on the composition with my wife, the two of us working

trumpet and violin was an important part of what we were trying to write into it,

I think if you have too many shots, you get vodka inter-face, not inter-mouth!

I wrote in lots of dynamics/ornaments on the score, and Vladimir played them
all effortlessly, and Bubowski tweaked them for the violin so that GPO played it
really well. Glad you like the sound and the music! You're extremely talented in
writing and playing, so your comments mean a great deal to me, thank you for

I've enjoyed hearing this tune progress since the first version I heard (V.
1, I think). It's a great tune and the refinements contine to add to the
tune. The new violin part sounds great. It really works in well with the
flow of the song and for a synth violin sounds really good. Maybe for
revision five you'll get a real violin.

Enjoyed it, Drak.

This is a gorgeous piece, Drak, full of light and whimsy, yet evocative
and substantive. The trumpet really shines in this piece. Perhaps it's
the fact that someone is actually playing it, and we don't hear a lot of
live trumpet on Macjams, but it's fantastic. Good thing, too, or I'd be
wondering why I wasn't called on to add my fake brass to this project.

This is a lovely waltz. Utterly charming composition, and both the trumpet
and violin sound excellent. Personally I would have liked a somewhat
stronger guitar and bass sound. Also, I'm not sure that bongos are
idiomatic for Mexican-type music.

Wonderful &mdash 04/26/06 - 03:59:54 PM
Hi Vic, Thank you for your critical ear! I have wrestled with instrument levels for
this piece... and I want the trumpet and violin to stand out as the two stars, but
if I knew a little more about mixing, I bet I could boost the other instruments
and open a space for the trumpet/violin via equalization changes, so they don't
get swamped. As for bongos, I wanted some soft two-tone percussion, and they
seemed like a good idea at the time :-) I also tried choosing instruments that
would be relatively easy to play the parts for real, if we ever found a group of
musicians to play this live for us. Any suggestions for a different kind of
percussion there, or none at all, perhaps?

combination of Mexican and European styles come through, and that the
mixture works for you. This was a tricky thing to balance, and it does take a
long time to enter this, at least the way I do it. It took me a week just to figure
out how to change key there in the middle! I'm learning though. Luckily

Paints a picture &mdash 05/15/06 - 09:02:27 PM
What a wonderful compliment, thank you for letting me know what you
thought of this. My wife and I both worked a long time on this, trying to get
it to tell a story, and be something to dance to. You'd appreciate the
following anecdote, keeping in mind that I've had no music theory classes,
ever and don't know my dominant from my tonic: I had written the first half,
and thought I was about done, and my wife listened patiently, and said that it
wasn't long enough to dance to, I should double it. That was easy, I put in
repeats over the 3 main melodies and added a middle violin solo and a little
nicer ending. I played it for her again when I had finished, and she listened,
and after it was done she said "ah, that is much better... except... maybe in
the middle, you should change key." I broke out in a quiet cold sweat... I had
never tried to modulate to a different key before... I didn't have any idea how
to smoothly work the music up to a different key, or what key to change to!
So, I just said "OK, I will work on that." and spent the next week working on
ways to move to a new key signature. I did do some quick online research
and I think it worked out OK, but I still remember being quite worried about a
seemingly simple task. Ah, I feel better now. :)

(REALLY) Paints a picture (!) &mdash 05/16/06 - 05:20:42 AM
First of all, I really appreciate the lengthy response to my comment! I'm never
sure if people are reading my comments when there is no response, or what
they think of them, although I understand perfectlly well that it's a time-
consuming process, and we're all busy people.

Secondly, I listened to it 4 more times this morning, thinking, "I KNOW I
commented on this before... but where's my comment?" Turns out I
commented on your previous version, and said pretty much the same thing
about painting a picture. So, now you know, I REALLY think it paints a
picture!

I liked hearing about the process that led to its current state; your wife has
great musical instincts. I think it's just right now, length-wise.

Finally, one of the reasons I listened to it so many times this morning was
that I was trying to figure out the form. Here's what (I think) it is:

AB~AB~CA'C'A'A''B'~CODA

(the tilde (~) is called a 're-transition,' meaning a section that returns us to
the opening key and material, which in this case is the descending trumpet
figure with ornaments over a Bb, F (or Adim), Gm, F chord progression)

A' = "A prime," which means "a variation on the original A section."

Basically, what you've got there is a Rondo form! Rondo is any form where
the opening section (labelled "A") returns a few times, alternating with other
sections.

Cheers!

Hi Drak.
This is just fantastic, I agree with everything that Amagi, Andronis and the
others have said about this. The music and the image is so powerful.

Thank you

Steve

Welcome Steve! &mdash 10/14/06 - 09:11:13 AM
Thank you, a lot went into this... but it has paid off. I learned a LOT about
composing, and collaborating, and made some great friends this way... and
most of all, got to show off some deep marital romantic love too... and she likes
it, woohoo!

Thank you &mdash 10/16/06 - 08:07:58 AM
Glad you liked it! I am very pleased with Vladimir's trumpet playing on this... it
was great fun to send the sheet music from California to Moscow, and have him
record it for me! What a great world we live in.
