Description:
The second in the "Woman in a bar" series from Ed and Paul (as with Gin & Tonic, I only did vocals). This time, she's alone at closing time.

Part one of the series can be found here: Gin & Tonic and Part three is here: Wine Into Water

Lyrics:
I smoked right through the night
Now it's almost closing time again
I'm like some lover's tragedy,
Or some twisted comedy, I guess

My life is pouring through the cracks
Keep the whiskey neat and the water back
All my demons can just relax
Keep the whiskey neat and the water back

Mind's awake, but my heart's asleep
To switch those two is what I need
One more round to kill the pain
So I can turn the page to yesterday

My life is pouring through the cracks
Keep the whiskey neat and the water back
All my demons can just relax
Keep the whiskey neat and the water back

Hope is hard to find
'Cause every day brings another night
All my lonely memories
They're the only things that never leave

My life is pouring through the cracks
Keep the whiskey neat and the water back
All my demons can just relax
Keep the whiskey neat and the water back

My life is pouring through the cracks
Keep the whiskey neat and the water back
All my demons can just relax
Keep the whiskey neat and the water back

this is beautifully well crafted & performed, nice to get to #2 in this
unfolding story. For some reason, the really nice compelling chord
progressions in some places remind me a little of "Angie" by Rolling
Stones. Really great songwriting, super lyrics, beautiful guitar & bass
playing (good drums, sequenced?), and of course, stellar singing for
this... this gives a closing-time feel, slow delivery, not so much laid-
back, but instead dragging on into the depressing hopeless anguish of
another night alone... shudder... wow. I admit that I didn't like the
ending fade too much, it seemed a little fast or not quite where I
expected it to fade... but that could be because I was lost in the song
and didn't want it to end. Brava/bravo to Joanna, Ed & Paul!
ttfn,
Drakonis

Reminded me of Neil Young's "Old Man." Tasty guitar work, full of the
space of loneliness (the cracks), understated finesse, a sense of
exhaustion and fortitude both. Really nice track.

Oh, the misery &mdash 04/24/06 - 01:40:41 PM
I feel the pain. Yet, somehow, your vocal delivery keeps the song and the character from becoming pathetic. What a fine line to tread. Well done.

The atmosphere you create is perfect - smoky, plaintive and reflective.

Now I have to go check out the rest of your catalogue.

Cheers.

You know I am ... &mdash 04/24/06 - 03:27:09 PM
... a huge fan of your voice ... and I am loving the downtrodden alchohol riddled lyrics of both this tune and Gin and Tonic. Can't wait for number three. The best parts of your songs are your ability to evoke just the right amount of melancholy into your singing and make them so believable. (I have to actually drink the alchohol to pull that one off myself) .... great job Joanna and Kudos to the boys for writing such great soundbeds for you to add your style to.

It's a country tune to my ears, which is just fine with me :)

Loved it.

Closing &mdash 04/27/06 - 05:50:50 AM
I came to this bar of the verge of closing time.
A good song flowed.
I listened to this bar to closing the store.
I like it.

She's more to be pitied &mdash 05/12/06 - 08:06:41 AM
As the song says, "She needs to be loved, not despised / Too much beer
and wine, too many good times / The lure of the honky tonk wrecked her
young life." Twist of lemon in the wounds of your voice, lady. Quite a
rendition.

A great companion piece to Gin & Tonic.
Again...what a terrific collaborative team here...

Glad you posted in the Forums about this :)

Tell the true story of life on the edge &mdash 08/18/07 - 11:50:48 PM
I love this piece of work. You have a real craft with lyrics. The music fit the song and the production fit the music.

Only one thing could possibly improve this and that would be to pull the vocal back just a little and maybe add a slight touch of reverb to it. Not much mind you, just a touch.

Bravo to you Joanna

Ed
