Description:
The latest version of this song can be found here: Crazy Story version 2 with Thoddi.

This is a song about obsession, when all you want is someone to narrate your concrete so you dont slide through the cracks... or float away in pieces. My two favorite parts: Donny McCaslin's head-spinning sax trio in the middle, and the unusual synth countermelody (and harmony) I came up with to bridge together the vocals. (I wanted something to defy harmonic rules and genre style, to create a sense of obsession and craziness without being atonal). It builds in this cool way toward the end. (I pull out all sorts of old synths, so I had a great time.) Kind of a jazz-fusion-acid tune with hip-hop percussion (well, I tried) but maybe because of the lyrics I decided to put it under Alternative. Please let me know if you think it should be in a different category. No loops. (And the bass synth doesnt ever repeat, exactly.) Art is Marquee by my lifelong friend Eric Green.

Donny also plays saxes (soprano sax this time) on Icarus and Icarus II (w/ TEXASFEEL on guitar)

Lyrics:
CRAZY STORY

Story.
Tell me a crazy story
to make sense of this day.
Don’t say little glories;
I don’t want to cheat that way.
Just your voice like a sidewalk beneath my feet,
narrate my concrete.
Please.

I want you to write me down.
I want you to read me aloud.
I want you to turn my pages.
Turn me, turn me
into a crazy story.
Turn me crazy. Crazy.

Want me too, on your lips.
Want me too, like breath from your mouth.
Want me too, for song, for praying.
I am yours; come play me crazy.

Tell me a crazy story.
Read me crazy. Crazy.

Prism hours like blades run across my skin,
tower like days too high for scaling.
So far away, your voice is failing.
The words of my life wait and wait and wait like crazy.
Crazy.

Come make me... crazy.
Come make me your crazy story.

Thanks. This is one of my favorite songs and I\'m really glad you like it. My
Hong Kong agent asked for a dozen dance tunes in 6 weeks, and they were
driving me nuts, so I did this one in 6 hours as a diversion, to center me
again.

As always, very good musicans on this song. The bass is
really really cool. Reminds me of song of the more mellow
Thomas Dolby songs.

Also, there is a level of complexity that is really nice (ie:
no loops in sight, and I believe it shows).

Didn't know any one else listened to Thomas Dolby. He always had a unique
sound to the textures of his songs. I tried to do this with the harmonic
aspects to the lines. Glad you liked it!

The build towards the end really got the hairs
on the back of my neck....

Agree with Mcboy about the Weather Report feel here and
there.

Another cracking track!

well-balanced and flavorful &mdash 06/14/04 - 12:24:52 PM
This song reminds me of a good meal expertly prepared.
Everything is top-quality, well-balanced with interesting
colors and spices included. This is indeed fine music,
produced and performed professionally.

I truly like pieces such as this, which don't fit into any
particular category or genre. It broadens and stretches the
listener, incorporating musical elements which people
aren't necessarily drawn to initially, but end up liking.

It's very important to expand one's musical horizons and
this piece does it beautifully.

I also really like to cook, so the meal metaphor is well taken. My composition
professor in college told me I should never eat at a fast food place, learn to
cook gourmet meals, and be creative in all aspects of life. Actually, the
learning to cook line is the best advice she ever gave me. Thanks for
appreciating this piece, it is one of my favorites too.

Great Tom Scott/WR feel, lovely drum and bass. And the sax break is a killer...

Sax is worth the ticket &mdash 03/01/05 - 09:03:05 PM
Just that way cool sax thing is worth the ticket. Cats, you
know some real cats. Love the delicate mixing of all these
sounds, the build of layers, and explosion of craziness,
the obsessive melody on the edge, the blades across my
skin spilling words that wait and wait and wait like crazy.
Know it.

killer track &mdash 06/21/05 - 01:30:23 AM
the composition, lyrics and arrangement are vast, meaningful and of rare depth.

the sax was brilliant.

a note on the tone of the main overlay melody done heavily with keyboard sounds: i personally found it 'unbelongingly' synthetic even though you might be going for that retro sound. a clean electric guitar for the same melody there might give this track even more depth, just something to try...

killer track.

Thanks for getting into the composition, I really appreciate that. I know what
you mean about the synth feel, having it be in a slightly different space (both
emotionally and instrumentally). I am working on a new collab that might fix
that, or bridge it, at least. Something along the lines of what I did with "Icarus."
Thanks for the encouragement.
