Description:
A song about suicide in mutliple rhythms (difficult enough to make you want to commit suicide, even though it doesn't sound that hard.) This is a song by Tobin Mueller that he wrote for a show but was not kept with the score as the show went forward, at least not as a solo in this form. I didnt want it to die, like this woman... Art is "Lilith" by Wayne Barlowe.
Lyrics:
If I leave the world behind me,
will it follow me across?
When I die…
Do pain and pleasure float away…
forever?
River of light, I reach out.
Lost and contrite, I reach out.
Help me to die and carry me far away.
Weightless water will guide me.
Lifeless daughter beside me.
Take me tonight and carry me far away.
River of life has cursed me.
River of death please nurse me.
River of memories, take me far away.
No more reasons. No more pain. Oh.
For seven years I wrestled death,
reaching out, reaching back, reaching beyond time?
Now I dress for death and await one final
Sweet embrace!
Dressed to kill.
Dressed to trace all the ills.
All the waste.
All that I’ve let waste away…
Wasted away.
Thirsty to cope, I reach out.
Guilty of hope, I reach out.
Help me to drink in the fate I deserve.
Cover it up. Dress it in innocence, like a bride.
Immortal death captured in suicide.
If I can’t live my life, I will live my dying!

i'm not one for show tunes...
though i like this. the frenetic rhythm makes me feel like i
can't make up my mind. i like that.
music is to convey and affect emotions.
so it is within here i find veins tearing.
i like the lyric, live my dying.

great voice...... &mdash 06/09/04 - 04:02:16 PM
Too MIDI &mdash 06/09/04 - 05:28:02 PM
You can really hear it in the piano in the opening
section in the odd time. It's just too "on". It sounds
fake. Turn of the snap to grid and get in there and
soften the edges a little.
Nice pipes tho. [ Reply to This ]
wow &mdash 06/09/04 - 06:31:18 PM
that was awesome. this is the first song I've listened to on here. I'm new to this site and garageband... I've made a few songs so far but haven't posted them yet.
This song brought back memories of a friend who commited suicide awhile ago. Very eerie. Great vocals and music. Sorta reminded me of something from a broadway play. [ Reply to This ]
good build-up &mdash 06/09/04 - 07:38:09 PM
This song has excellent values in production and content. It definitely sounds
like something from a Broadway show. Wonderful voice! I especially enjoyed
the way this song built in intensity towards the end. Very effective! [ Reply to This ]
Yes. &mdash 06/09/04 - 09:06:50 PM
I liked it. This isn't my genre of choice, but as I've told others out here, I still recognize talent for what it is. That was good. [ Reply to This ]
Yeah Wow is right &mdash 06/09/04 - 11:04:56 PM
Phenomenal stuff. Andrew Lloyd Webber move over. I have
played JC superstar on drums and I know he likes the odd
odd (?) time signature or two.
This could stand up to any of his stuff I reckon. Easily.
Why on Earth was it dropped?
Only slight niggle is a bit of distortion on the vocals but a
REALLY strong performance otherwise.
Very very good indeed. [ Reply to This ]
Yeah Wow is right &mdash 07/08/04 - 03:08:19 PM
right, distortion. it was recorded that way on tape and we didn't notice it until after my voice was shot. actually, it hasn't recovered yet. i may never sing again...

Glad you didn't want this piece to die &mdash 06/09/04 - 11:57:49 PM
It's really mesmerizing. I was letting my iChat scroll by
and got a little tunnel vision. Very tricky rhythms, but
handled nicely. You can really belt it out girl. This is still a
show tune, even if the show was too small to hold it. :-)

well &mdash 06/13/04 - 02:29:27 PM
it sounds a LOT better the second time hearing it, to me.
what was wrong with my head? anyway.
interesting, intricate piece. suzanne, you have incredible
pipes.
odd timing is cool and creates a frenzy.
another strong work from you tobin! [ Reply to This ]
Radically cool &mdash 06/13/04 - 04:01:13 PM
9 for content / creativity. 8 for production. Overall is 8.
I gigged it just a tad on production as there were a few
times when your voice seemed to overpower the mike. I
imagine that's fairly easy to do as your voice has immense
power.
While the tune is very 'New York,' I don't grade by genre.
Something's either good or it isn't and this certainly is.
Highly creative and very well executed. [ Reply to This ]
Great Tune! &mdash 06/17/04 - 02:08:42 PM
I love the flow of this tune... and your voice sounds wonderful on it! And of course since you're not just singing but also acting each line, your professionalism shines through. Please please do us all a favor and post some more of your singing.
My wife heard me listening to this tune from the other room and yelled over, "Who's that? That's a good one!" [ Reply to This ]
Very Nice! &mdash 07/29/04 - 06:56:29 PM
You have an awsome voice! Very effective with the music. I hope your voice has recovered. Best of Luck! [ Reply to This ]
Ah simple &mdash 08/10/04 - 07:53:11 PM
This is OBVIOUSLY written in a 4313.13 / 5.3 time
signature. No problem. ;-D
Lol.
Passionate performance. That must have been a huge pain
to get the timing right.
Good one, Suzanne. Reminds me of Church in some ways.
Maybe Church plus Dreamtheatre plus Alfred Schnitke
divided by your time signature.
(haha) [ Reply to This ]
Fantastic! &mdash 10/10/04 - 05:27:13 PM
Wow, Suzanne, you have an incredible voice! I absolutely
love show tunes, musicals, and theatre, so I was a very
happy listener with this song. But man, what a difficult
song to sing. Major kudos to you for being able to put so
much emotion into such a tough song. You really sold it.
Great lyrics, Tobin -- wonderful imagery. [ Reply to This ]
So great to hear this again... &mdash 05/20/05 - 12:04:31 AM

and here I thought &mdash 10/09/05 - 10:15:28 AM
you were "just" an axe-slinger. Shame on me! This is pretty darn fantastic.
May this be the last time I judge an artist on the first work I hear! [ Reply to This ]
Once again, very kool &mdash 11/29/05 - 10:07:59 AM
Great work, be careful though, my expectations are getting very high for your tracks [ Reply to This ]
Overwhelming &mdash 02/26/06 - 09:11:44 PM
My compliments to you, Suzanne, for navigating those assymetrical
waters with such ease. My appreciation also goes out to Tobin for his
engaging production and rhythmic savvy.
In brief: Great song, great production, great singing spells instant
classic!

This is beautiful &mdash 03/28/07 - 03:22:27 AM
I wish i had a more broad vocabulary, i'm definitely no critic.
It's a beautiful song by itself, but your voice is so expressive, there is a poignancy and expressiveness, and such strength. You bring dignity to the sentiments... i am glad that this expression exists, that does not condemn these feelings... i like how it questions things......
"guilty of hope, i reach out"
Anyway, it is not only the song but the expressiveness in your voice that is very touching and compelliing.
I find it beautiful. Thank you. [ Reply to This ]
