Description:
This is a 'rerecording' of Alone God Sufficeth, originally posted in August 2005 here at MJs.

Since posting the song originally, I had wanted to go back and redo the vocals (the guitar track by Tom Atwood is the original).

It's interesting to 'revisit' a song as I did this one. In the previous version, I had sung the lead and Tom had the task of putting his accompaniment to my track. (Not an easy task!)
This time around, I was recording to Tom's track.

I'm still amazed at the wonderful simplicity and warmth of the guitar track. It matches perfectly the simplicity and surety of the text.

Thanks, Tom. What an honor it was to do this collaboration with you--again.

Lyrics:
Alone God Sufficeth

Let nothing disturb thee,
Nothing affright thee.
All things are passing
God never changeth.

Patient endurance
Attaineth to all things;
Who God possesseth
In nothing is wanting.
Alone God sufficeth.

~St Teresa of Avila

Beautiful &mdash 05/17/06 - 10:32:32 AM
Very lovely, Mysti - I love what the song says and this version is very much "in sync" - hindsight has given you 20/20 vision (any such thing as 20/20 hearing?) You've a wonderful gift and spirit, you and Tiler are a double-threat!

Beautiful! &mdash 05/17/06 - 03:45:02 PM
I have been touched by the works of Teresa de Avila and St. John of the
Cross (me, a Baptist, who'd have thunk it?). This captures the spirit
wonderfully.

Now I we can just get it in the original Spanish . . .

Thanks for the blessing!

Tom

I've been practicing my high notes, but I think you've got me beat. ;)
Your voice is beautiful. Tom's playing is very good - I would say
sympathetic, but you are singing to him this time, not the other way
around.

Magnifique! &mdash 05/17/06 - 11:51:27 PM
Beautifully sung and played. You're so right about the warmth of the
guitar. And your voice rings true throughout. Thanks so much for this. It
is a treasure.

Be well!

As others have said, your voice is truly beautiful, and the blend
between voice and guitar is sublime. Is this your composition? I wasn't
clear on this from the description. It is a beautiful composition, and
beautiful performance.

Nit-picking: As all singers know, diction is harder in high registers...
"Who God possesseth" was difficult for me to make out, and also, don't
forget your final consonants! Although "th" as a final consonance
seems very challenging to me!

Beautiful. Did I say that already? Have you had a chance to perform
this in church? It'd go over really well.

From the accompaniest &mdash 05/18/06 - 07:25:48 AM
This was easy for me. All I did was send Mysti the quote from St.
Teresa, and within a few days she had written this piece, complete with
guitar chords, which she sent back to me. So - all I did was play along
to her original vocal. This reworking is much more polished, the vocal
is much stronger, clearer. And I believe she corrected some of my
infamous "mid-range booming" in the guitar track.

Thanks, Cat! Lovely.

Oooops &mdash 05/18/06 - 07:32:11 AM
I meant, from the 'accompanist.' You know, the accompanier...the guy who
plays along...

I love checking out the new songs (new to me not macjammin enough).
One of the names that gives me a rush before I even click the play button
is seeing the name Mystified. Beyond my anticipation. Uplifted as if on an
angel's wing.

Wonderful &mdash 05/23/06 - 03:17:39 AM
Wonderful!

I had no objections to the first version (the most exacting critics are
usually our own). But now I can understand that you wanted to make this
one. It is just wonderful. So professionally performed and - important - at
the same so soulful. You haven't lost an inch of your love for the song.
Thanks of a great contribution to my personal collection of "wolds most
beaufiful songs"!
