Description:
Wellsir, for Warren Smith, this is what happened after Self-Portrait.
lotta notes possible for this one. Yes, true story, written almost 30 years ago.
But mostly, with this one, it was an excuse to do another one with Dadai (Jack Miller). I've played with hundreds of musicians over the years and I can honestly say I haven't had more fun making music than I have with Jack. And damn, I've never really met the man :)
If you're the type who reads the notes before playing the tune, jes sit back and relax. This one's sorta designed to sound like a buncha guys getting together and pickin' a tune. Nothing more. And nothing less.
Snow: lede & backing vocals, flat-pick electric-acoustic, bass
Dadai: bunch'o'backing vox, two steel string guitars, slide guitar, harmonica
Thanx to Zetes & sembleton for lending an ear and their post-production input.
Lyrics:
Micky
She'd almost turned 30, the first time we met
A friend of a friend introduced us
I called myself Khance, and she was Mirage
She said: "I'll make you tea"
I said: "Don't make a fuss"
I lived in a basement; she lived in a cloud
She told me that she wouldn't hurt me
Wish I had known before it was too late
But at the time she became all she could be
She seemed all together when her friends were a mess
She said: "Yes well I had my turn"
"Mom ended her life with a hair-cutting knife"
She wondered why she'd never learned
Her husband had taken a job in computers
But that's not why she called it quits
A change in the times, had caused her to think
There were others that she could perform with
When it became winter I bought her a coat
Designed by some fairy in Rome
She said: "That's the nicest thing anyone's done
"For me, you just wait til we get home"
In her satin nightclothes, the roommate slashed her wrists
And one-night stands, they get breakfast
A room covered in blood, aesthetical death
I guess that's why musicians don't last
Then I had to leave her alone for awhile,
I bought us some really good wine
We drank it, got loaded and then went to bed
Slipped into secluded recline
She came up to see me when I was in the woods
I showed her off to my old friends
But many of the things we northerners say
Were more than she could comprehend
I went back to Chicago and bought her a ring
I said: "Would you come be my bride?"
She said: "I'm so much older than you are my friend
"But I sure did enjoy the whole ride"
I doubt that I will ever see her again
There's been quite a few girls since her
But she was the only one, I'd ever asked
Why she said "no" I've never been sure.

Excellent work! &mdash 05/18/06 - 12:52:18 AM
Fine storytelling here. I like the lead vox a lot. Fits the tune like a glove.
Jack's background vocals add depth. The playing throughout by both of
you is wonderful. This one definitely gets on my "Best of Macjams" MP3!
Be well!
PS---Have either of you heard Frogmorton's recent: UNSEEN HAND?
(http://www.macjams.com/song/20642). I think it is an exceptionally
good piece and hasn't got nearly the support it should have. [ Reply to This ]

wow, thanks maestro, high praise indeed.
and I will check out froggie's piece. Nod of the cap on a clever and unselfish
way to solicit song comment's :)

From the Land of 1,000 blue funks... &mdash 05/18/06 - 10:55:51 AM
referring to me and not the song. I haven't been much in the mood to write or record of late. But I recorded and sent too many random noodling guitar parts (more than I care to mention) to Snow a few weeks ago (seems longer). Snow, you distilled my mish-mosh down to somethng useable... kudos friend. I love the feel of this song. No surprise there, eh?
IMHO, Snow is one of the best song writer/ story tellers here at MJ. I wish more were familiar with his music. To top it off, the flavor of much of his music will suit anyone who looks back to the sixties and seventies songs as two decades of the best.
Snow, your vox sounds as good as that of a young lad of 30 years ago. It is always a pleasure to sit down and jam with you. And if you want to start earning the big bucks for one nite gigs, then you got to move to CA. heheh...

by the way, how in the world did you come up with that old photo of me that you spliced into the song art? A classic picture. By the looks on the faces, they're both thinking, "I can't believe I am still playing music in the same gin joint 3 nights a week..."

Yuh know bud, when we started this 30-sum years ago, I thought we'd be a
lot better at it by now.
But we're still havin' fun at it.
Thanks for the jam, D. You know I'll do it again anytime.

Good story &mdash 05/18/06 - 01:12:15 PM
Sounds good. Maybe bring out the vocals a small bit more. Sometimes it
gets a little covered. The mix is good however with the music.
Interesting story, good job. [ Reply to This ]
Good story &mdash 05/18/06 - 04:44:34 PM
ty JS. And yep, you're right, the lede vox could come up a tad. My only excuse
is that Dadai gave me so much material to work with, I kinda lost sight of my
own vocals :)
ah hell, probably better not to have my throaty gargling up too loud anyways.
cheers

Subterranean homesick blues &mdash 05/18/06 - 03:25:29 PM
Well not quite, but I'd bet I heard Bob Dylan in here somewhere:)
Very cool song. This kind of folksy country stuff is fun to listen to when its performed with such energy and joy you two show here.
Your vocals is very well suited to this storytelling style and the whole shebang is just great. You must have had great fun in the process making this.
I need to have a copy of this.. hope you don't mind. [ Reply to This ]
Subterranean homesick blues &mdash 05/18/06 - 04:06:27 PM
Bob who?
lol, you got me thoddi. Yes, Dylan was of course a huge influence on this one.
Tangled Up In Blue, specifically.
At one time, I played this one much more like TUIB but speaking of
influences, it was a conversation with Zetes one day awhile back combined
with Ejh's posting of his older material that got me thinking of picking up the
tempo.
Glad you liked it and please do take all the copies you like :)

cut to the quick &mdash 05/18/06 - 07:28:21 PM
Did they have computers 30 years ago? Yeah, minis and mainframes, I
guess. This song has it all... the hair-cutting knife, aesthetical death
and even the fairy in Rome! Very laid back and unpretentious. Doesn't
need to be any more special than what it is already. Fine collab, fellas. [ Reply to This ]
cut to the quick &mdash 05/19/06 - 06:10:35 PM
Yes, they did Schletts. At the time, I was working on a redundant DEC PDP 11,
which was an incredible jump up from the PDP 8 we had been working with,
especially because of the new one-button "bootstrap procedure" button.
Programming was done with a machine assembler language, ie nothing but
1's and 0's and millions of 'em.

Thanks bronco.
Snow is the ultimate wingman (hockey, for those scratching their heads).
He'll do whatever is necessary for the team to win... and then delfect the
praise that comes his way. As you know, in this case, he is much more than
the wingman.

Another chapter &mdash 05/23/06 - 03:16:37 PM
I'm guessing the problem wasn't you - it was your friends. They
probably talked too much hockey during her visit. ; )
It's always a challenge writing autobiographical material when trying to
make sense out of the narrative of our lives. Good job here. It's fun
peeking through your keyhole! As this is a follow-up to your earlier
"Self-Portrait" posting, and you seem to be on a pensive streak, can
another installment be far behind?
Love the "basement/cloud" juxtaposition. "Fairy in Rome" seems the
only line that's dated (not bad for 30 years!). What's poignant is the
moment you've selected to write about - one of those cruxes - where,
depending what choices are made, will forever alter the account. As
listeners, we don't know whether you are better off because of the
choice she made (even if we, like you, don't know the reasonings
behind her decision). All we glean is that things would have been - for
better or worse - significantly different. So ... perhaps that leaves us
wanting more?

Another chapter &mdash 05/23/06 - 06:15:20 PM
Ty Warren. You seem to have more insight into my life than I do lol.
And, as i mentioned in an email, there is more to the story, much of which is
already posted here at MacJams.
Chronologcially, the next chapters are In Memory of Clement Wood, Parts I
and II and the story concludes with 6-4-3.
Wasted, Nightmares and Toronto Girls were also written during that period
but really have nothing to do with the story, unless, of course your incredible
mind makes some connection that was lurking in the depths of my psyche :)
thanks again pal

Hah - I just wrote a comment that it would be nice if we could re-arrange the
order of our posts. (Of course, I could just download these songs and put them

quite the jam! &mdash 05/23/06 - 03:32:26 PM
Lotsa stuff all jammed up in there... reminds me of a veritable, er
virtual Rolling Thunder Review show. Lots of stuff could be cut out of
this to tidy it up, but then it wouldn't be so much fun. Great tempo and
the drums sound great! And that's not the half of it! Good job!
And the ending is... [ Reply to This ]

any room for you in there eh? Not to worry, I'm guessing the bunch of us will
hook up again before too long.
