breathtaking &mdash 05/19/06 - 10:38:24 PM
One of my favorite folk tunes, given an amazingly classy, intricate,
beautifully heart-tugging treatment. No other words but the inarticulate
"wow"! Faved & DLed to my treasured BillFurnerFolder. Thank you for
such wonderful music.

Thanks Drak, I got inspired when I heard Alex De Grassi play a rendition of this
tune. But not enough times to glean any of his ideas, except the fact that he had
a field day on it. He played it solo wthout orchestration.
I kept on adding some Jpack 4 instrumentation, I was going to leave as is almost
at the finish, but decided to add a trumpet feel to give more of a military texture
at start and finish.

Thanks much!

You've got the beauty of the melody, and you've also captured the
essential sadness of the song as it originally appeared, when it was
"Johnny I Hardly Knew Ye", before it morphed into something almost
jaunty. Your playing is very tight and musical, very clean...

The recording itself is clean and clear.

I have to admit that I don't know who Johnny Perez is.

Another great one, Bill.

Johnny P is a military guy from across the border down mexico way, he
represents in my mind a man who dearly loved his newly cherished country :^)

I think we have all ran across somebody that is new to this country that we
admire. So I tried to put it in music, the best way I know how.

Energetic performance &mdash 05/20/06 - 07:30:29 AM
Steeleye Span used this tune as part of 'Fighting for Strangers' - so it
always has strong anti-war associations for me. Wonderfully played and
structured (enjoyed the build up). There's lots of fine harmonies and
you've done a great job on the accompaniment (excellent use of
tremolando strings)

Lush, evocative opening....ahhh! Lift off! Haven't heard an acoustic piece
as energetic as this since Mason Williams' A CLASSICAL GAS oh so long
ago. Beautifully executed. Deep feeling throughout. Peachtree has done
you no harm Bill. An instant fave.

Be well!

Am is a lot of fun to work with and that is the Key of Classical Gas, which was
featured on the radio for quite a while and still is actually.

Thanks

... as always. You've got a direct line from the heart to your fingers;
you just lay it all out there, and it's impossible not to be drawn in.
Beautiful, and moving, as always. Great guitar chops, as always.
Interesting interplay between guitar and strings. I think that aspect
(the interplay) sounds better here than on any other recording of yours
I've heard, and it's sounded good on other recordings too.

Also has a kind of Spanish flamenco sound happening.

Wow. I'd pay money to hear you play live.

(I'm not sure what the story is that this refers to; you say a little in your
song description, but it made me curious as to what this refers to.)

Powerful Song Bill! &mdash 05/20/06 - 05:57:41 PM
Near perfect song Bill. My only suggestion would be to fade in on the
strings toward the front a little slower to melt it into the composition
smoother. This is right up there with the best you've done. Thanks for
posting it. The composition is a very timly one too. Its so sad that this
song keeps coming back generation after generation, I can remember an
especially powerful performance in the Vietnam days at my
university...Peace and Light, Norman

Rejuvinated! &mdash 05/20/06 - 06:10:56 PM
Big emotions without lyrics Bill - that's class! I'm glad the move to PTC
hasn't dulled your playing at all - is this a rejuvinated tiler here?
Excellent sounds, playing, recording etc, etc, etc as usual. You seem to
have gotten on top of the strings here - easily your best use of JP4 that
I can recall. Keep em coming Bill and I'll try to keep up with them : )

integration of software instruments I've heard from you. The song is
moving and very powerful. Thoughful, yet energetic. I'm glad I made it

Thanks for the post, it's tough to gain both skills of playin and recording to were
you can satisfy the macjammers. Setting up the mics, getting a decent preamp.
Having mics that I can live with. I guess it's always a learning experience for
sure.

are making beautiful music together. I love your ability to record and mix. Being able to treat this masterpiece with such delicate instrumental seasoning requires incredible talent and passion. Everything is perfectly placed, perfectly balanced. This shines as an example of how you've mastered the craft of sending listeners on one magic Furner journey after another. Thanks.

new interpretation &mdash 05/22/06 - 12:51:37 PM
I don't know how many different versions of this song I have heard over
the years - certainly dozens. The one that sticks out most in my mind
was recorded by the Chad Mitchell Trio back in the mid-Sixties as a
combination anti-war song and tribute to President Kennedy, bringing
a new meaning to the line "Johnny, we hardly knew you." Tying it to the
current border war/immigration debate is certainly an interesting twist.

There is a difference between covering an old song and re-interpreting
it by making it your own. To me, your version of this classic folk song
clearly falls into the latter category. You retain its heart-wrenching
passion and sadness while making it sound fresh for contemporary
ears. And all of those asides, tangents and variations you deftly fit in
make it a feast for old-listening ears as well.
