Description:
a friend of mine pointed out that as his daughter got older, her dreams got smaller. It gave me the idea for a song about a girl walking through a zoo, looking at animals that represent her dreams, and as she ages, they become more tame.
Lyrics:
It was a sunny day and I had more
Fingers than candles on my cake
The zoo was all mine to explore
I’d see them all, make no mistake
The one named Lucy paced alone
In a giant box behind her cage
Her meals were made of flesh and bone
Her eyes they danced with silent rage
Her tattered claws were dried with blood
An angry scowl across her brow
I smiled as she lay in the mud
No man nor beast could stop us now
Oh, Lucy, guard your dreams and guard your visions
You never can hold onto them too tight
Life will starve them out with its decisions
So be sure to let them out into the light
Cause they die a little each day in the fight.
Well the next one had a coat of satin
Without a saddle on the wind
She carried me off to Manhattan
Was a winter day when I met him.
Bent his knee and said he’d love us
I turned her loose and took his hand
He hated Lucy’s glare above us
I changed the route that I had planned.
One day he asked if he could ride her
Left me with his sons to chase
When they came back, she looked lighter
A beast of burden in her place.
Oh, Lucy, guard your dreams and guard your visions
You never can hold onto them too tight
Life will starve them out with its decisions
So be sure to let them out into the light
Cause they die a little each day in the fight.
Worn out goat in the petting zoo
Tiny hands over bumpy fur
Don’t ya worry, girl, I got gray hair too
Is it any wonder he ran off with her?
Grandchildren with their hands out
Not much time spent in the yard
We’ll sleep alone I have no doubt
On a dusty floor that’s cold and hard.
Days of flowing milk behind us
A novelty in an empty stall
The laughter of the kids reminds us
Of the freedom just over that wall.
Oh, Lucy, guard your dreams and guard your visions
You never can hold onto them too tight
Life will weigh you down with its decisions
So be sure to let them out into the light
Cause they die a little each day in the fight.
A turtle with a broken shell
Doctor says nothing that he can do
Keeper kills the light with a fond farewell
Puts us out to pasture and out of the zoo.
Oh, Lucy, guard your dreams and guard your visions
You never can hold onto them too tight
Life will weigh you down with its decisions
So be sure to let them out into the light
Cause they die a little each day in the fight.

I can see why you liked my songs. I'm really liking yours as well. Really appreciating your lyrics. Your vocal delivery style is highly listenable to my ears. I really like folk music.
I'd love to hear this fully fleshed out musically. The drum track is a little monotonous. But that is easily fixed.
To match your themes, it might be interesting to have the musical backing build and become wilder as the animals in the verses get tamer. Towards the end, I hear tambourines, a mandolin maybe, and perhaps even an electric guitar riff thrown in for good measure.
Keep 'em coming. [ Reply to This ]
