Description:
One day last summer, I was walking my dog Storm. As we were coming home, an older fella was crossing the street ahead of us. He was using a walker and it took him quite awhile.

But when he saw us, he stopped and waited until we reached him. Turns out, he was a musher too in his younger days and wanted to say hello to my lead dog. "I can't do it any more," he said.

I went home and wrote this song.

But it wasn't really right so I sent it to Dadai, who immediately sent it back with a middle 8. "Much better," I said.

But for some reason, I had a helluva time with a bassline for it and the tune, like me, got put on a shelf while I wasted a bunch of time in other worlds.

As my interest in the Second Life music scene waned, I pulled this one back and came up with a solution to the baseline problem — send it to jiguma :)

In the back of my mind, I heard keyboards in this one too. Again, brain cramps prevented me from getting the sound I heard.

Then, a burst of inspiration struck. I sent the tune to Einarus, who, despite a job and exams, managed to get into my head and drag out the last bits the song needed. My jaw literally dropped when I heard what he'd done with it. His keyboards were exactly what I had in mind.

snowdragon: 6- and 12-string guitars, vocals
Dadai: guitar and vocals
jiguma: bass
Einarus: keyboards

Lyrics:
Wheels
Words & music © 2005 by Craig Bakay and Jack Miller

Met an old man today
He walked with the help of wheels
He had no time for play
And I know just how that feels
Cuz they put me on a shelf
And I'm feeling old myself
The wheel is spinning round

There is a priest in town
He's slightly overweight
More than 300 pounds
He's never had a date
But he rides his bike through hell
Nobody ever says he's swell
His wheel is spinnin' round

The wheels in my head
Keep spinnin' round and round
As I walk, through the streets
Of my home
In every face, there's a story
I don't know
And the wheels keep spinnin' round
Spinnin' round

I know red-headed George
Sometimes he forgets his name
He fell into the gorge
And he's never been the same
But he fixes broken bikes
And goes fishin' when he likes
His wheels are spinnin' round

what a great band &mdash 05/27/06 - 06:27:26 AM
This sounds fab guys!

The keyboard connects to Procol Harum in a way. Suited drums to this rolling kind of groove. It's cool and laidback. The bridge with Dadai makes it complete. Good songwriting and arrangements.

It's a thrill to be able to send parts of songs around the world and put the bits and pieces together to something that sounds as if you've been in the studio together.

Bravo!

It is indeed a thrill to connect musically with other players around the world.
It's a perfect fix for us jamaholics. We'll have to hook up one of these days
too.

The Procol Harem nod wasn't something I had thought of but yes, I certainlly
hear it. I probably didn't notice it because I was so blown away but what Einar
brought to the song. One of my most incredible experiences at MacJams will
always be the first time I opened what he sent me and that keyboard jumped
into the mix. It quite literally was a jaw-dropping moment and "whoa, that's
exactly what I was hoping for."

And what you say about being "in the studio together" is in a sense very true.
It's a virtual studio, granted, but I've come to a point where I start to think my
tunes just aren't sounding quite right without Neil's bassline on them.

Similarlly, I've had, and still have a few more, tunes where I hear tiler,
Schletts, Zetes, Bouchard, Katch, many others, playing along even before
they've ever known the tune exists.

And what can I say about Jack? Dude, if we'd hooked up 30 years ago . . .

These are great lyrics &mdash 05/27/06 - 08:46:26 AM
and the vocals and music deliver it well.

Very moving

Like how it stops and Dadai come in, like E's playing. He is very consistant
in almost everything he does in doing quality melodies.

I am listening the third time as I am typing. Really top quality in your
voice snow. Like your style here in singing snow!

Way to go you guys, a very enoyable listen for me.

Thanks T. You know it means a lot from me to get a nod from you.

Yeah, and like I was saying to thoddi, one of the best things about MacJams is
how we can all connect for stuff like this. It didn't take Dadai very long to spot
the need for a middle 8 on this one and he took what was destined to be a
shelved-project back onto the desktop. Similarlly, Einarus added the final
touches to bring it to life.

But something else should be mentioned. I struggled for months trying to put
a bassline to this. Nothing I tried worked. Sent it to jiguma and boom,
problem solved. I guess I tend to think like a guitar player and sometimes, a
tune just needs that bottom end there holding it together as opposed to
getting all fancy and flourishy.

I've played with a lot of bass players (even am one from time to time) but I've
never found one any more rock-solid than Neil. There's a reason bass is
usually considered part of the rhythm section and Neil personifies this.

Glad the lyrics worked for you too :)
cheers
snow

Snow sent me the keyboard version that Einarus sent back to him and I just want to say that I was likewise amazed. Einar, your addition to this song is what makes it a song (makes it work)! I am impressed!

Pshaw - my head is swelling up over here.
I'm just flattered that you guys thought of asking me, let alone keeping my thing
in :) After I heard this song the first time round, I just couldn't say no.
Thanks for letting me be a part of this.

great &mdash 05/31/06 - 05:17:04 PM
you know it's sad i'm only 18 and can relate to the thought of feeling old. the vocals are nice. nice instrumental an all around good song. the over all mix is a little quiet, but that's alright. it works nicely when you put so many talented musicians on the same piece.

I'd forgotten about this one! &mdash 01/21/08 - 02:20:32 PM
Where is Snow anyway? This was a very nice little song, and snow wrote quite a few of these. I suspect he's sailing the seven second life seas.

Early days are often the most memorable :)
