Description:
A re-do of one of the first songs I submitted here.
Lyrics:
Some go some stay
Thor Oliversen©2006
some go some stay
As the darkness slowly falls upon the old man in his chair,
He is looking at a photo showing him and his late wife.
The doorbell rings,
he walks to the door.
And he recognises loneliness has come to his house.
some go some stay
The lonely man reads the (news)paper every day.
Just to find one more friend passed away.
All the things he liked to do,
Will no longer bring him joy.
His bones are tired from the journey, and will not take him anymore.
Now he's tired and alone
won't find joy in anything
anymore
He is not waiting for
better times to come.
He is waiting for the boat
to take him home.
--
Now he's tired and alone
won't find joy in anything
anymore
He is not waiting for
better times to come.
He is waiting for the boat
to take him home.
some go some stay
While the days go 'round and 'round
and looking back is all there is
there's a thrill to be found
and it's something he will miss
In his little world he stays,
watching pictures from the past.
The old man’s not afraid,
he just want back what he had.
Now he's tired and alone
won't find joy in anything
anymore
He is not waiting for
better times to come.
He is waiting for the boat
to take him home.
He is not waiting for
better times to come.
He is waiting for the boat
to take him home.
some go some stay
He is not waiting for
better times to come.
He is waiting for the boat
to take him home.
yes, he is waiting for the boat to take him home.
some go some stay

better and better and better . . . . . . &mdash 05/28/06 - 12:42:44 AM
Thor,
I can't remember your original of this, but this is very good indeed.
Like I keep saying, if there was an improvement award (for just getting
better and better and better ......) you would be first in line. This is
quite long, and I was doing something else while listening - when I
heard snippets of the song I thought I was listening to the radio (a
good station of course!).
You have a real feel for soul/R&B (in the old sense of both). I grew up
on early British R&B (as well as the obvious American bands), and this
would fit right in there.
Excellent vox, harmonies, guitar, piano/keys, bass and drums (and the
production's not bad either!). What are you using for drums?
A definite keeper.

I'm glad to hear you think I am improving Neil:) I hope I aways find joy in turning stones to see if there is other ways to do things then what first comes to mind.
I've put it under blues, but you may be right in that its more of a soul/R&B tune.
Thanks for your nice encouraging words on production and performance.
I have used to different drumsets in this. The one in the intro and outro is a drum loop with a filter effect to make a dreamy mood to it.
The rest is midi drums, where I've used the jazz drumkit in GB, and penciled in some breaks and fills.

Woke me up a bit... &mdash 05/28/06 - 01:10:20 AM
I wasn't paying attention to the lyrics, just grooving out on the music
and vibe and I was thinking this is loooooove making music, but then I
started listening the words and EEEEK!
Some go, some stay, what a profound lyric. I think this may be your
best overall production. Like Neil, I wouldnt be surprised to hear this
on the radio and, if you weren't giving this away for free, I'd be first in
line to buy a copy.
It's so good!!! How did you get the effect on the vocal in the left ear on
the some go/some stay? I'd love to have that technique in the arsenel
(of course, now I expect you to say, what effect, because I am kind of
dorky ;-) ) [ Reply to This ]

Hi Lisa, it's a treat to see you've been visiting my song. You always write such entertaining comments:)
I'm thrilled to hear that the music made you groove:)
Thanks for mentioning the lyrics. It's a song I made when my mother passed away six years ago.
It's so encouraging to get such a positive review, and since you say you will line up to by this stuff, I will now reveal the big secret with the vocoder stuff going on in the backing vox department.
It's garageband of course, and to each ''real instrument'' track you will find an ''improve tuning'' option (I have a norwegian edition and don't know what the feature is named in the english one). I've used it on full throttle and checked for ''limit to key'' (or whatever it's called in the english edition).

You nailed this! great story in the prose. You know you've got a great mix when you can flat line the EQ in the song player and get this rich sound. Super job, DL for my library and voted straight 10's

Hi Harold,
It's good to hear that you think the EQ turned out good. I always worry about that. My studio monitors lacks a bit in the sub department, and I don't trust headphones as a neutral reference.
Thanks for the high score:)

Thoddi my man, I like ALL your versions of this song. And the one that I have on my A-man Thoddi CD is just as good as this. Where are the NEW hits .... :-)

Bent... is that... your name or...?
ROFLMAO... my good friend, how nice to see you here:)
The songs I do over and over is perhaps the ones I like better. Making new recordings is a way to try to find the expression I'm hearing in my head... Not always so straight forward to pass on what resides there.. not even to my self...

You musically paint an incredible scene &mdash 05/28/06 - 07:37:00 AM
in this terrifc tune!
Would love to hear more clearly understood lyrics at Macjams like this.
This is classic Thoddi! This is my fav of yours. Because you show the
importants of lyrics in music. You make the words really jump out
from your recording to the listeners ears.
Again, in my opinion one of the better written tunes here at mj. Of
course we all know how hard it is to get on major radio stations. But
this should jump out and reach DJ's ears all over the world. But what
good is good. Just remember that you have the tune , radio just has to
wake up and give MJ a little consideration with the likes of Thoddi's
"some go some stay"
Way to go!

Shut-In, Shutdown Blues &mdash 05/28/06 - 09:43:28 AM
Thor, this is a very poignant lyric.
The challenge for us, as we grow older, to see the people and things
we love pass away, is a very difficult one. You've captured the angst of
that effort very well here.
You've created a tight instrumental bed with a full and fluent mix...
very well-played. The vocal harmonies are perfect for this tune.
I, too, could hear this tune getting radio play --- *if* you cleaned up
the lead vocal a bit. Some of the notes are a bit shaky and some of
your phrasings on the lyric are a bit awkward.
Polish it up a bit and I think you've really got something. It is a very
thoughtful --- and soulful --- song. :) [ Reply to This ]
Shut-In, Shutdown Blues &mdash 05/29/06 - 02:47:41 PM
I appreciate your constructive review.
When I record my stuff i'm usually to eager to get it on the road, and often choose to let such flaws that you point out slide...
Lazyness of course... It has to do with that I record mainly to capture an idea of how I want the song to be like regarding grooves and such. I don't intend for my GB recordings to be more than a demo or a sketch of an idea.
But I really appreciate comments like yours. because you point out stuff that i might go to easy on in a further progression of the song.
Thank you.
...and I had to look up poignant:)

Man! &mdash 05/30/06 - 02:47:33 PM
That was just power packed w/ goodness - Albeit, this was a very sad
song - I'm glad that I've always enjoyed being alone way more than I
should - Who knows how our story ends but certainly, this tune
reminds us that if were not careful, it could be a sad, sad ending...
This is 000 so soulful, Thoddi - I'm still convinced that you somehow
snatched up my pair of funk and soul 'genes' - There the ones with the
holes in them and they look just like that...
Thanks for another wonderful soul journey, my friend - Dion [ Reply to This ]
Man! &mdash 06/03/06 - 11:36:21 AM
Well, as they say... you don't know what you've got, 'till you loose it.
My father, which modelled for this song, is a good excample of that this is true.
And I'll try to use those genes you passed over to me with care;)
Thank you for your positive feedback Dion. I'm always glad to see you've beeen listening:)

know all too well. Musically superb. Excellent lyrics and vox. Sweet guitar
solo. Three thumbs up!

I love your stuff &mdash 06/04/06 - 12:51:25 AM
Thank you Nolan:)
The midi drums is the jazz-kit from GB. I've probably tweaked the eq a bit on it, and added reverb.
The intro/outro drums is a loop with a tad of filter effect.
