Description:
Some thoughts about the "Patriot" Act and what it means in relation to the "War on Terror". Sampled speech is from arguments in the Supreme Court over the Jose Padilla case. Many thanks to Alimar, Penguinsocks, Tktran, Gudkarma, Vanish and the rest of the jammers that have been on the iChat chatroom (macjams) lately for feedback and putting up w/ revs in progress. They who would give up an essential liberty for temporary security, deserve neither liberty or security Ben Franklin

Lyrics:
Chorus:
What if it's all over and done?
What if they've already won?
We've traded away our liberty
For a little phanthom security

Enemy said "I want to destroy you."
Looking around seems like he got his wish.
I'm only saying maybe we've been baited
and reeled in, just like a stupid fish.

Chorus

Patriot Act ain't very patriotic.
'less a police state's what we want to become.
What will be next? Maybe an amendment...
Better move while we can, as long as the nation's numb

Chorus

Bridge:
Haven't we already changed our lives?

*applause*

i bet synching that tricky guitar rhythm with the voice was
challenging and it turned out very well.

I've got a long day tomorrow, so won't be able to reply
much, but thanks for your help and support. I'll try to
update and get a graphic in here tomorrow night or so.
I probably am not getting as much music done, but I'm
having more fun the last week or so.

Keep on rocking in the (let's hope it stays) free world!

That was hilarious, but I'm pretty sure Brecht is not yet in the public
domain. Threpenny was written in 1928. Though, not too sure about what
German copyright was like at the time.

But, if anyone has a recording of Threepeny Opera in iTunes, you could
download this, and put it in the same playlist to check out the effect. :-)

Great concept &mdash 06/17/04 - 08:23:24 AM
I really like the lyrics. The effect on your voice really
compliments your voice. And the female/male talking is
really clear and great sounding. Nice bridge. And the
whole idea that the talking drowns out the music.... very
cool.

Re: Great concept &mdash 06/19/04 - 10:20:09 AM
Thanks Tobin. Coming from you, a compliment on lyrics really means
something to me. I also like the fact that the final spoken stuff overwhelms
the music. I'd meant it to all fade together, and was working in a second
project file w/ a mixdown of the main basic tracks and the "extras" from the
supreme court. The fade was already in the main mixdown, and when I heard
the spoken stuff take over like that I decided to leave it.

very visual song! &mdash 06/17/04 - 10:34:19 AM
I felt like I was watching a movie while listening to this
song.

You did a great job alternating music/vocals with the
sound bites. I also liked the way your guitar playing
followed the lyrics, complementing one another well.

GREAT bridge!

Excellent production values too.

Greatly enjoyed the ending.

Thanks! I like it when a listener can get a clear mental picture out of my stuff.
Hearing this is very gratifying.

On the subject of the bridge, thanks, I just stopped and asked myself: "What
would the Beatles have done here?" and thought of that Cmin thing and got
the dreamy John-ish vocal thing in my head. I pretty happy w/ it.

I was pretty amazed at how much really strong, interesting stuff was in the
arguments for that case. It's also almost spooky how they were talking about
torture and such (I think) before the Abu Gareb stuff came to light.

You got a voice like the "Blur" frontman in some passages
:) Great song!

You people keep costing me money - hadn't really listened to Blur, but just
looked them up on iTMS and am pretty tempted to buy their "Best of"
collection. Thanks for the comparison.

A fine sentiment indeed! &mdash 06/18/04 - 05:37:55 AM
Hi there,

I can certainly agree with your sentiment here. I like
a lot about this song. The tense, choppy `tricky` guitar
rhythm - and also the bridge - and definitely the spoken
bits - which are nicely and carefully mixed. Your voice
sounds good too and well mixed.

I do think it the chorus needs something to give it a bit
more urgency though. The drums there sound a little
heavy 1-2-1-2 at the moment. To my mind they want
some sort of 8 to a bar cymbal or something in the chorus
(though I am not a drummer by any means - so feel free
to ignore me!) - the `What if its all...` chorus tune feels a
little unadventurous to me as it stands as well. But it does
sound like its on the edge of being captivating.

Keep up the Bush-bashing!

I like the chorus hook quite a bit. The audio clips work
pretty well now that they can be heard. You pulled it all
together into a cohesive whole, and it fits rather nicely
into your repertoire.

Strong statement, strong song &mdash 06/24/04 - 11:39:45 PM
I like it! Like I'd mentioned before to you in chat, it's
reminiscent of the old "peace" songs of the early 70's
only with a more educated flare and edge.

Thanks Pack, coming from one of the "masters of edge" on this site, I
appreciate that a lot. I love what you and Chikoppi did to System Failure - I
already liked that one a bunch.

Great Stuff! &mdash 06/28/04 - 09:56:10 AM
Very thoughtful. Very good.
I love the clips. Love the production. Love the lyrics. Could
be tightened up a bit and maybe sped up a little.
