Description:
Another re-recording of a previous post. Again, the vocal tracks were cleaned up.

This song is a departure for me. My first foray into the art rock genre - a cabaret sort of rock song if you will. A fantasy piece: who hasn't wanted to be the femme fatale in a Hitchcockian noir. Ok, maybe it's just me.

Lyrics:
Words and music by Charlie Chen

The camera zooms up close to the starlet's face
All teary eyes and pouty lips
It pans down to reveal a smoking gun
Her innocence betrayed by the cock of her hips

The blond boy is silent with mouth agape
Is he in love or in disgust?
Lit from above the camera adores his lines
His naked torso reveals his lust

Chorus:
Don't you just love a campy movie?
I wanna be in a campy movie

They clean up the blood and the soiled sheets
Just enough time for another quick tryst
Stabs of light bounce off prying mirrors
The sirens call, the scene fades to mist

Chorus repeat

“Ahh. I think I’m in a campy movie.

Substance? Nope. But it’s oh so stylish
A nice film noir with a naughty pink flourish
Silly dialogue and preposterous plots
I wanna cause a scene before I rot”

“Wake up!”

I want to wear that starlet's dress
Hold the gun and make a mess
Pout my lips and cock my hips
Speak the words from lousy scripts

Or make me the boy with stupidity to endure
Hunky and vapid and horny and pure
All muscles, teeth and rippling attitude
Easy to please and full of gratitude

Chorus repeat

Someone Should Send This to John Waters &mdash 05/31/06 - 03:50:34 AM
This is wonderful - well done, sir. It also sounds like you had a lot of fun
creating this, your enthusiasm shines through your singing and
arrangement.

Someone Should Send This to John Waters &mdash 06/01/06 - 03:12:23 PM
I did have a ball with this piece. It's a departure for me thematically, lyrically, and musically. Among others, I very much had John Waters's sensibilitiy in mind as inspiration while putting this thing together.

Thanks so much for the listen and the comments.

good song. &mdash 06/01/06 - 02:05:15 PM
this song is amazing.... very well done. i think the volume on the vocals
could go down just a touch though..they seem a little loud compared to
the music.

good song. &mdash 06/01/06 - 03:16:03 PM
Thanks for stopping by and having a listen. I'm glad you like the song. I just replayed the song from this site, and the vocal mix does seem a little hot here. Sometimes the mix changes once a song is uploaded to MJ's, but in GarageBand and iTunes, it sounds OK.

I might just have to post a forum thread and ask about this question.

Cheers.

mix levels change on upload &mdash 06/18/06 - 06:42:09 AM
i'm beginning to suspect there is a problem with the audio on the iMac. it
seems like Apple did a little sound "sweetening" on the audio output.

or perhaps Bose did it in my external speakers.

there is a method of "enhancing" stereo done by cross mixing the left and
right sides out of phase. unfortunately it means if you mix a song on a
computer like this, it will sound OK on that computer, but if you play it on
something else. it's very different, and usually undesirable.

i don't have all the evidence yet, but if you play a monophonic audio file on
my iMac it sounds awful. something is definitely wrong.

the symptoms i've noticed is that vocals smack in the middle end up
sounding way too loud on a different player (like in my car) - also the bass
ends up being way too loud.

yours is not the first post i've seen that mentions the effect of the mix
changing when you upload it. since i've only read a small fraction of all posts
on MacJams, i'll bet this happens a lot.

i guess i need to look in the forums to see if anyone knows more about this...
any hints?

If I weren't under the wraps of a bad bad flue, I'm sure I'd muster up something more clever to say - This is an incredible piece of work my friend - Dion

Thanks for the support, Dion. I'm glad you like this song. It's always gratifying to know that my efforts to try new things pay off.

Cheers, my friend. Get well soon.

More camp than butlins &mdash 06/02/06 - 01:28:47 PM
Wow, this seems like a real departure for you Charlie, but what a track.
Wonderful instrumental arrangement, polished lyrics (as per usual) and
the vocal hits the tone of the song bang on the head.

This needs to be in a play or movie, it's just perfect.

All together now ... 'I want to wear that starlet's dress'.

Spooky Queen &mdash 06/03/06 - 10:14:23 AM
Your voice is similar to Queens, love the mix , imagination is spooky but meant to be. Put together very well and does have the feel of watching a movie. Good stuff, maybe you can create video to go with it.

Thanks for listening and commenting. A music video would be even more fun to put together for this.

And I'd get to play all the parts.

Cheers.

Would rate higher with video.
Maybe you guys are talking about Roger Waters of Pink Floyd??
I can hear a Pink Floyd air about it too.

Again, Very Good!

John Waters is a film director who has made some very campy movies: Hairspray, Cry-Baby, Serial Mom, and Pecker among them.

Very campy movies!

I love this Charlie and loved your forum post, too. The song is so
original, your vocals are terrific and the production is very clear. You
obviously had 66 pounds of fun while you were putting this together
and I'm realy glad you posted it. D/L, faved, big scores...

I had to listen. The devil made me do it.

ha ha! &mdash 06/06/06 - 12:24:36 PM
This was very original. Well done orchestration, too. The only thing I
didn't like too much was the drums... I felt they could have had a more
dramatic (flamboyant) flair to them... with crashing cymbals, timpani, and
so forth. Overall, this tune was quite hilarious... you had me all giddy by
the end.

I'm glad I gave you a chuckle. Interesting thought about the percussion/drums. I'm using loops for my drum tracks, and I seclected a more rock sound, but never considered adding orchestral percussion intruments. May just have to play around with that. Thanks.

Thank you for listening and commenting.
