My first run on this tune (which this one is most decidedly NOT) was absolutely the best take - I'm sure Mike would agree. It just so happened that I had a great reed on and the stars were in alignment at the time. Unfortunately, I ended the solo way too early on it, and subsequent takes later on that week just weren't up to the original sound or feel... very frustrating that I just couldn't reproduce it accurately. Maybe I'll post it one of these days.
Since then, I tried to generate this as an actual song, and went through countless iterations of heads, backgrounds, and solos before just settling on the fact that I was only really hearing this as a jam tune. It was important to me try to keep the 'nasty' aspect of Mike's intent with the original, and the only way I could do that was to sort of "Keep It Simple, Stupid".
Anyway, many thanks to oldlibmike for letting me have my way in raping his awesome little song. I think this is a really talented individual who really did a fantastic job on it.
Hope you like it. :-)

This groove just got me and the sax playing kept me. Then the melody
with the harmony horn, is nice. I like the tom scott type arrangment on
the backgroung horns. What a great exit a little trailing sax thing.
Great playing.
Keep em coming.
